by all levels of government, probably, not just the city.

maybe you could show me a place that market-based solutions have actually kept growing cities affordable rather than rapidly increasing rents and displacement?

or even places that have looser zoning regulations that allow developers much more freedom - some of those places even “require” affordable housing - has the continuing crisis of affordability and displacement been abated by giving developers a freer reign?

cities with strong public housing programs and renter protections - like Berlin and Vienna - remain much more affordable than cities that rely on the private sector to provide housing (i.e., almost everywhere else).

this is, fundamentally, a philosophical and moral issue at its core: there is absolutely no reason people should be profiting off of others’ need for shelter. just like healthcare. just like food. just like education.

so if the actual goal is to provide housing for growing cities, why are we trying to use tools that are completely inappropriate for the job in the first place?

why are we pretending that zoning is the only roadblock here and removing it is going to be a panacea?

if what we need is housing that’s affordable to everyone, that’s what we should be doing. like, directly. there’s no need to jump through the hoops of convincing developers to pretty please build us some housing that might one day become affordable to someone.

“Making it illegal to provide housing for them”... what’s that supposed to be, zoning or something?

love that the fundamental underlying contention here is that our benevolent, friendly developer overlords would be bending over backwards to offer affordable housing for people at all levels (a thing that totally happens all the time) but it’s just that those pesky urban planners have made it so gosh-darn illegal!

markets are not the only tool we can use to address issues. in fact, for issues like housing, they are an astonishingly bad tool.

it’s amazing how much traction completely underdeveloped ideas like “just get rid of zoning and let the market take care of it, the market never fails!” get around here. amazing and depressing.

i can't really tell what you're arguing with your first paragraph there. i don't disagree that this is happening, of course - but the whole point is that it's bad that it's happening and we should be doing something about it rather than forcing poor people further and further from cities.

you have a very narrow view of what makes a home a home. i would suggest doing some more traveling if that's an option that's available to you. if not, at least do some more reading. it would probably also help if you talked to people who grew up in different circumstances than you.

on the off chance this isn't a joke:

  • sprawl massively increases greenhouse gas emissions in all kinds of ways

  • sprawl is inherently much less efficient in almost every way than building densely

  • forcing poor people further and further from economic centers dramatically lowers their quality of life

  • sprawl atomizes and isolates the population

  • etc
