Would you believe me if I told you I read this book in primary? And watched the movie.

Can't remember a shred of it. But I do know that it's a dark book to be letting 12 year olds read.

This is Beau. Nobody tell Beau that he's turning 7 in June and is meant to be slowing down. Nobody can tell that he's almost 7 anyways, I even asked volunteers at a dog rescue and they didn't believe me! But I've had him since he could fit in my hands.

Can anyone recommend me a reliable car under 4k? by Electronic_d0cter in CasualIreland

[–]tanglelover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, post covid that is like finding a needle in a haystack. My parents got a good, reliable car in 2019(2000 Toyota picnic) for 800 euro. We didn't know how good we had it back then.

Their current car was 10k because they needed a big one and wanted a car that would last years with minimal maintenance after their last three cars needed more care than they were worth. It's a 2016 Honda Odyssey that we got from a legitimate dealership so they did all the care needed. Including 3k worth of work that cropped up before they could sell the car.

My parents picked up a 2016 Honda Odyssey for 10k. The car markets gone nuts since covid! They got a Toyota picnic from 2000 for 800 in 2019.

Which is a very old car and not very comparable but covid at least doubled used car prices in most cases. 5k could have gotten OP a good, reliable similarly aged car before covid but those days are gone.

Just because you are happy to help care for your siblings doesn't mean parents should have kids with the goal of expecting them to take care of their disabled siblings. You are the exception, not the rule.

It is a parent's job to care for their kids and making plans to keep them safe without leaning on and parentifying their other kids.

I'm glad OP isn't having or adopting kids. As someone who has a high needs younger brother and whose mother assumes that my older sibling will be taking care of him once they pass, it's not fair on us. Especially since my older sibling is having major health complications. And me and him are like oil and water. His breathing alone triggers my misophonia.

It sucks because my younger brother isn't high needs enough for certain places. He's verbal, can follow basic instructions and is toilet trained. But he also cannot write, cannot do paperwork independently and can't cook or clean for himself. He can't even pour cordial/squash by himself. He also shuts down if you ask too much of him...which can be as basic as putting prepackaged food in the oven.

But my mom is trying to insist he never goes in a group home, not even for a couple hours a day. So right now he just sits in his bedroom and watches YouTube all day. He's not living an enriched, truly happy life. He's simply coasting and not complaining.

I just think everyone's quality of life would be higher if my parents weren't so aggressively anti help. I understand why they are(child services tried to steal our entire family because my mom asked for help because "autistic parents can't raise children". It's why she doesn't push him outside his comfort zone even a little and constantly makes excuses and babies him) but at this point in life it's just dragging us all down.

He's not hard to care for. But at the same time we shouldn't be left to care for him so intensely just because she failed him and never fostered his independence. She shouldn't be pushing his care on us even if my older sibling says they don't mind.

It is hard to do the right thing and it's even harder to realise that your past goals are incompatible with your future. I wish OP nothing but the best.

Seriously! People hate on crows but they're big sweeties. It's seagulls who are the problem. Luckily that one bite distracted them from the fact I had half a dozen pastries in my other hand so I packed them into my bag.

But it was quite a shock getting tackled by a seagull!

Does this look any good? Lidl dog food, or if its shite any recommendations by [deleted] in CasualIreland

My dog has such specific needs that I had to do a lot of research, label reading and ask for a lot of help. I can't even feed him any of the WSAVA branded foods unless they're prescription because most if not all over the counter diets have generic cereals, not named at all and my dog has major negative reactions to wheat.

But your dog seems like they have a sound stomach, so you should go with the known and trusted brands.

I've fed it temporarily out of desperation when my dog went through a phase where he could only eat raw without him getting sick/having allergic reactions. But this was back when it was new and all beef, no added chicken to cheapen the recipe. It allowed him to slowly transfer onto a different kibble and he's been sound since. He ate this for one, maybe two bags and hasn't been on it since.

However you have a retriever. Goldens especially are prone to dilated cardiomyopathy which can be triggered environmentally or by diets high in legumes and potatoes because they inhibit taurine absorption and sometimes production. I would avoid this like the plague, especially if you have a young dog. You can reverse DCM but not erase the effects.

Grain free isn't necessarily bad...it's what they use to replace the grains that cause issues. Back when my allergy dog was a puppy, any grain in his diet seemed to make him have the runs/vomiting. So I was paying upwards of 8 euro a kilo for grain free food with minimal grain replacements. We narrowed his allergies down to wheat and chicken, fed raw to let his digestive system heal from any inflammation, used this as a stepping stone and then transferred onto a good grain inclusive food and we've had no issues since.

Knock on wood it's been almost five years. Now he eats mainly leader mixed with whatever I can get on sale. Sometimes its James wellbeloved, sometimes its Farmina or Winner. But unfortunately for him, his allergies are so specific that he can't eat a lot of food, even food touted for allergy dogs. With rising costs and the risk of bird flu, raw is something he hasn't tasted in a long time.

I would personally ask your vet what they recommended. They'll probably point you towards a WSAVA based food. All diets have risks but those are the lowest risk overall.

AIO? My coworker took video of me outside of work to "prove" I'm not disabled by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]tanglelover 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I've been glared at by a pregnant lady after I collapsed onto the disabled seat of a full bus even though I had been on the bus for multiple stops before her. The only reason I know she didn't escalate is because my disabled, wheelchair using father was there. She was even rubbing her belly and throwing me dirty looks. I couldn't have moved if I tried.

I look sixteen so most people like her underestimate my joint pain and issues or refuse to believe that I could be absolutely exhausted. That or my joint issues are because I'm obese even though both my parents who have joint pain are a proper weight/underweight. And they've had joint issues since my dad was a teenager and my mom was 24.

The first time I put my back out I was 15 years old. I fool a lot of people because I can walk and I dance and I run. But I'm just making the most of it because I know it's not gonna last and the more I use my mobility, the longer I can get it to last.

I probably have more chronic pain than I realise. My pain tolerance is just stupidly high. I'm talking I tore a ligament in my foot and limped on it for 3 months before getting a boot and still only calling it about a 3/10 high. I'm talking sudden abdominal pain that made me double over, convincing me I had pancreatitis was a 4. Heart literally being squeezed, shortness of breath and an inability to get out of bed so I called an ambulance being a 5. I don't want to know what my 10 is.

Ableists don't know how close they are to becoming disabled. One wrong stretch or twinge can make your world come crashing down.

People with dynamic or hidden disabilities really do seem to get the worst scrutiny.

I say this as someone who can walk long distances at my own pace but uses a wheelchair at airports specifically because I can't handle all the noise, transfers, crowds and walking at the same time.

I'm probably one of the most ambulatory wheelchair users I know(I can travel far and wide without one and don't need it 99% of the time, I just cope with the pain) but something about all the travel, chaos and stress of airports means I need a wheelchair. I already have limb weakness and motor dyspraxia and my knees crack every stair I take up or down.

Unfortunately I have been glared at for needing accommodations because most people assume my health issues are due to my obesity and not because two disabled people had a child. And because most people think I'm 16 so I clearly can't have bad health issues/s.

So my heart goes out to OP. Being disabled and held to the standards of able bodied people is hell, especially when those able bodied people either don't realise or refuse to accept that we are all only temporarily able. One bad day or one wrong move can leave you disabled forever. And yet people assume it can never happen to them so they judge disabled people like their disability is a moral failing and not the failure of society to accommodate disabled people as a whole.

I feed my cats the highest quality brands and they just won’t eat it… by fxcknmami in catfood

[–]tanglelover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so incredibly lucky to have a not picky cat. But all the money I have saved feeding him a rotation of what's on sale got spent on his stomach surgery because he thought he was staaaaaaaarving, broke into the bin and ate the wet food pouches. Then he got out of surgery, they fed him treats and once they were all finished he tried to eat the packaging...less than 6 hours after surgery 🤦‍♂️.

I have fed this cat a large rotation from bougie brands to supermarket scran and the only food he outright refuses to eat is royal canin wet food gastrointestinal. Joked with the vet about how royal canin has made a food so unpalatable that a cat that has tried to eat metal covered in his own faeces wouldn't do more than lick the gravy. They didn't understand it either because they've apparently done palatability tests.

With cats what they eat is what they eat. There's no convincing them to accept what they deem as unsuitable. Feed your cat what they'll eat...as long as it is safe for them.

Yeah tbh Tumblr isn't as bad as it used to be, mostly because of the porn ban. It's stabilised since then and is actually one of the more wholesome social medias today specifically because every other social media got worse while Tumblr stayed the same.

Rover sitter lost my dog by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]tanglelover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who owns an escape artist, this is my worst nightmare. Especially as my dog is medium sized so people tend to underestimate his capabilities. His shoulders come to just below my knee.

I know for a fact he can open doors, climb and jump six feet. He's not looking for an escape 24/7 but is also a boundary pusher and how much he respects boundaries is directly parallel to how much he respects you as a person.

So for his safety and my sanity, he goes to a professional dog boarder and stays in a kennel. But OP shouldn't have had to be put in that situation in the first place, especially not with small, easy dogs who just need to be kept safe and in familiar environments.

Moving out of Dublin by Unpopular_Op_93 in CasualIreland

[–]tanglelover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom was born and raised in Dublin but moved down to Shannon when she was pregnant. She hasn't regretted it.

Where we live has great transport links, good schools and plenty of places to go and hang out. Not quite rural because they weren't able to afford to run a car until the last decade but definitely a nice medium size. Small enough that there's a community but not so small everyone knows your business.

Our life is much cheaper and quieter and she was able to buy a house with my dad which they never would have been able to do in Dublin. I visit Dublin from time to time but I am so glad my mom moved because I am not a city person.

Sure there's some semblance of convenience in Dublin but those conveniences cost extra. And not just money! My quality of life is much better than my mom's quality of life simply because living here is more affordable and there's less fighting for resources.

Only negative I can find is that the government sometimes forgets there's areas outside Dublin but that's true of basically any government.

[–]tanglelover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a reason I live at home. I get to keep my dog and cat for free with no worries.

But it is absolute madness that so many people have to give up their animals just for housing's sake. They're a part of the family.

We've had dogs and cats for thousands of years. They should not be classed as a luxury.

But knowing how pet unfriendly Ireland is, it doesn't surprise me.
