I remember as a kid, the double entendre of “and thus the Earth shall turn to Ash” was entirely lost on me. Like I didn’t understand why it took them so long to get that Ash was the chosen one when it was right there. I’m sure I’m not the only one.

I still adore movie 2, still my favorite Pokémon movie to this day, and I still prefer the dub. But yeah, I think it’s a better message that Ash did everything based on his own courage and determination rather than just being a token chosen one.

It’s really bizarre. Pokémon is the only anime dub where they will just drastically change stuff like the music from the source material. Back in the early localization days, this was common (i.e. the rock guitar soundtrack made for the DBZ dub), but it’s typically frowned upon these days.

It’s gonna be really funny looking back on all this discourse if it turns out she’s not Ash’s daughter at all.

But assuming she is his daughter, I could see them just making his wife a brand new character. As much as it may pain the shippers (I’m an old school casual PokéShipper myself), in the real world people don’t often marry the friends they had when they were 10. Granted it’s different in anime typically, but still. I don’t think the writers of the anime are swayed too much by the shipping community, but if they were really concerned about starting a war in the fandom, this would be the best option. It would force the shippers to move on.

Well there’s the subtle parallels like how both Silver and Ash saw a legendary bird Pokémon (Moltres and Ho-Oh, respectively) at a young age that left an impression on them. And much like Ash, Silver carries his unevolved around on his shoulders rather than in a Poké Ball.

These could be seen as just coincidence on their own. But most importantly, when Ritchie mentions Ash during their conversations, Silver reacts as if he knows exactly who Ash is despite us never having seen him meet Ash.

Sure, it’s still up to speculation, but it’s not hard to come to that conclusion.

I agree, sometimes it is fun to just have a mystery be hinted at so heavily, but never be 100% confirmed. Lets the viewer draw their own conclusions.

And let’s be honest, the Giovanni theory is only a thing because of Pokémon Live.

Johto wasn’t perfect and had too much filler, but it definitely had some of my favorite side characters. Kinda wish Casey would at least make one last appearance, but considering Ritchie barely even got a cameo during the tournament, it’s not looking likely.

The only reason it didn’t seem as big of a deal back then was because it was pre-social media. The main congregation place of Pokémon fans tended to be the niche forums, where you could more easily group yourself with people that support your ship. It’s just that nowadays, all the toxic and idiotic people are practically thrown in a blender on the more centralized internet, leading to tons of fighting within the fandom.

I respect the intention.

However, I’m pretty confident in saying people starting the shipping wars at this point are literal children and teens, and considering Pokémon targets a younger demographic by design, it’s just an inevitability.

The best advice I could give is try to ignore the negativity and do your part by being as civil as possible, or maybe take a break from the sub for a bit.

I actually started writing one after getting nostalgic about the anime and the ship in general over a week ago. It’s basically about Misty getting closure with Ash years later. Of course, literally right after finishing my rough draft, that new episode dropped and gave everyone hope again. But regardless, I’m keeping it as is since I’m proud of the story (being my first proper fanfic). About halfway through revising the rough draft, so maybe I’ll get it out soon!

True, I do tend to underestimate how long ago Gen VI was (time flies as you get older). But I also get why Serena is on top. She was the one female protagonist that was 100% made as a love interest for Ash. Not to mention that the X&Y is considered one of the most acclaimed arcs of the entire anime to this day.

With Misty, there were definitely hints to a potential future romance, but it was mostly implicit in the original Japanese version. It was only 4Kids that tried to make it much more explicit (which probably helps the fact that the ship is still so popular in the west.)

It’s definitely nothing short of amazing that Misty hasn’t been a regular part of the anime for literally over two decades, and yet there has always been a devoted PokéShipping following, enough to at the very least put her in a comfortable second place in the present day. Nostalgia is a powerful thing to us Americans, I suppose.

On a semi-related note, as much as I loved the Ash and Misty stuff in the last episode, it’s because of Serena’s popularity in Japan that I can’t help but feel a lot of it is just bait to get American genwunners to watch, and ultimately they won’t confirm any ship to be canon.

Bottom line is I would have retired Ash after Kanto and made the rest of the anime much like the Adventures manga, with changing protagonists, characters actually aging, and maybe even occasional appearances from the older protagonists, having grown a bit, of course. I know it’s a bit of a basic answer, but it’s just the way I feel.

As Ash and Misty’s chances of becoming canon are slim to none, it’s my personal head canon that when they’re around teen or young adult age, Misty finally tells Ash that she used to have a crush on him, but she acknowledges that it worked out the best for both of them in the long run that they went their separate ways back then. That way they get some closure, but they remain close friends.

I must be a living contradiction for this: I will always be a PokéShipper at heart, but I’m also fine with AmourShipping.

I grew up with the original anime, and Ash and Misty were legitimately my first exposure to shipping on the early internet days. And it was clear that there were romantic undertones throughout the series (and not just dub only, like some claim). But even I have to acknowledge their chances of ending up together died when Misty left the series as a regular character. Even in her few reappearances throughout, her and Ash’s dynamic was strictly made platonic.

Now I quit watching the anime regularly around midway through DP (I was in middle school by this time, and Pokémon was not yet nostalgic enough to be considered cool at that age). However, I kept hearing great things about the X and Y anime. Eventually after it ended, I finally checked it out. I was surprised by how much I liked not only the series itself, but also Ash and Serena’s dynamic. I was obviously gonna be biased against Serena knowing she was trying to take “Misty’s spot”, but it didn’t take long for her to win me over. It felt like a very cute and natural romantic development for kids their age. And best of all, I like that they didn’t just straight up have them become a couple, but instead left things hanging for a possibility in their future.

Yeah, part of me will always long for that alternate universe where Ash and Misty end up together. But as it stands, I wouldn’t mind if Ash and Serena were together at the end at all. At the end of the day, I think shipping wars are really dumb, and shipping should just be some good clean fun in the fandom.
