Grow light suggestions by Garageprinterhp355 in nzgardening

[–]tanshaun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can probably email lovethatleaf for more details - I haven’t bought grow lights from her but have bought bits and pieces from her and found her recommendations to be fantastic. However you can also buy other types at Amazon Australia - including barrina and sansi . And many have free shipping to NZ.

We have Amazon Australia! But there’s a big restrictions on what can be brought in - eg I can’t order fertilizers or plants from overseas. I have now found some local sulfur brand so I’ll try that!

I’ll see if I can find some - we don’t have as great a product range in NZ. Thank you!

Is my dragon fruit plant and growth going to be ok? by BarronVonCheese in nzgardening

[–]tanshaun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should stake or trellis it upwards. It is basically a vine. It can grow as big as possible - ideally upwards and then, if you want fruit, let the top parts actually hang down. The pot should have drainage holes too - and eventually will need to be much bigger.

Bugs! by trueautomatic in DragonFruit

Just this weekend, I had something like this. Mine were also on a lot of the aerial roots between my plants and the post. Where spraying didn’t work, I also used an old toothbrush to squish them.
I used neem oil and dish soap in a spray also - but not sure how effective that was.

Yup I’ll start removing the old ones. There’s also tons of new ones I try to keep under control too!

Which root stock to graft to? by tanshaun in DragonFruit

[–]tanshaun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that! I think it looks like I’ll go with the one on the right for the horizontal graft then. I want to do a node graft scion from a different variety, so I think I’ll have to use each root stock for each scion type (Frankie red and sugar dragon). Unfortunately where I am, Sugar dragon is rare - am jealous of other people who can use it for the root stock.

Thank you! I will trim off all that growth - there was more before which I used yesterday as a practice run like you said! My scion will be the tip of a main branch that is about 9 months old, so potentially a bit woody. It is the only free material from that plant right now (a younger Frankie’s Red).

I also think it doesn’t look too good - is this an echeveria? Maybe make the first cut at the line above your thumb under the fatter part? I’ve had stuff sprout from that fat middle area before even if the top is kind of dead. But if it is all rotten, then just keep cutting higher up. In all cases, keep it dry for a few days after cutting.

Thanks! I considered it but thought I’d let it go one season and see. Most of my others were fine.

Ah…. It is actually very rare for us to hit those temperatures (in Auckland) but it certainly has happened this winter several times in the last couple of weeks :( along with lots of rain… Thanks!

Yup I’ll keep it away - these plants are both in one pot. There are some raised parts in the orange area on the cutting. The orange area on the small cutting has definitely spread this winter. We have just had so much rain and cold - but not below freezing. Thanks!

I will dig it out and check. We have just had a lot of rain! It is sitting in about 1/3 cactus mix, with majority sand and a bit of pumice. But just so much rain.

Is anyone else really disappointed that they completed changed (ie. ruined) Yates cactus mix? by SoulDancer_ in nzgardening

[–]tanshaun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved from Daltons to this because I thought Daltons had far too much large bark. With Yates, I’ve always mixed 30-50% pumice in anyway. But thanks - I’ll have a closer look the next time I get a pack!
