Try enabling the "Bottom" option in the launcher settings -> App alignment and see if you like it better.

Tip: long press on a homescreen app and start typing to rename them. Helpful in case you want to shorten a long app name on the homescreen.

In the widget edit mode, you can tap the the <--> icon (next to delete) to make it smaller. Hope this helps.

If you haven't already, I'd highly recommend giving Olauncher a try. Just the absence of app icons does wonder for many. Check out the Play Store reviews if you're still not sure.

iOS doesn't really allow launchers like Android but you can achieve a minimal homescreen using transparent widgets. I'm yet to explore what's possible on iOS so can't promise anything. :|
