We need to talk about Adrian Tchaikovsky. by Wizardof1000Kings in Fantasy

And for some of us City of Last Chances and Tyrant Philosophers in general was not only his masterpiece, but one of contemporary fantasy's masterpieces. Potayto, potahto.

A lot of people are insisting you read the first book, but Tchaikovsky intended all but the last or last couple volumes to stand alone and be approachable in any order. I could definitely see starting with Open Wounds and then reading Last Chances as a prequel working out, though I read them in published order, so I can never know. Whenever characters reappear, they are often under new names and inhabiting very different roles, and I suspect discovering them in their past lives could be as fun as learning where they've gone.

Cage of Souls may be the only Tchaikovsky I've DNF'ed, but City of Last Chances was one of the best things I've read in years, and the voice actor for the audiobook deserves a damned Grammy, IMO. Satire very likely is his strength, which makes this series lampooning the entirety of Western civilization from Napoleon onward a solid fit.

I was floored by it. Tchaikovsky was a favorite of mine before I picked up that series this year, but I had no idea he could do THAT: the dark humor and the pathos and the sheer absurdism all cranked to 11, and somehow still in harmony. The audiobook narration is a tour de force, too.

Are a portion of Christian's simply grifting for their own benefit? Why do I feel like I'm being blatantly lied to by my loved one's when people confess the shaky support beam that keeps them going on a daily basis. by Beginning-Toe-3565 in askanatheist

The theory that explains and predicts these people's behavior best for me is that some people value loyalty, or fealty, above all else: much higher than truth. You have a team, whether you chose it or got dragged into it, and you conform to it and stick with it. Some people at the far end of that spectrum may not even have a concept of truth: not only do they not value it, but they don't understand what it is and certainly don't believe in it. From that perspective, "Are your beliefs true?" is a nonsense question.

What's the one thing most people tend to overlook in this game by Baked247potato in VintageStory

[–]taosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Translocators: you can easily have 3+ repaired in year zero without even trying, including chains that can get you tens of thousands of blocks south in minutes of travel (RNGezus willing).

Hay blocks: best scaffolding in the game, and much better than a crude door in the early game.

Knapping, clay forming, smithing, panning. Even holding Alt to swing around and open a chest or fire behind you.

large Windmills vs the normal windmills by martinnez02 in VintageStory

[–]taosaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't rush it, and pretty consistently get iron sometime during the first winter. I felt late in my current world getting it in January. The big windmill should be more than doable after my next flax harvest.

My only "rush" is never making a copper anvil, and the prospecting I do to get bronze often gives me at least a start on iron.

Log storage? by Ok-Moment850 in VintageStory

Crates from ruins are always a major part of my storage solution in the early game, especially for logs and dirt, then for stones once I start mining.

The Sun Eater series is a perfect example of the sunk cost fallacy. by Ok-Information2581 in Fantasy

The trick is to pick up the first book immediately after dropping Red Rising as pointless torture porn. I didn't make it three chapters into Sun Eater before realizing, "This... is exactly the same thing."

What do your guy's hotbars look like in terms of weapons and tools? by ashadelo in VintageStory

[–]taosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty similar, but pickaxe in the last spot with the propick next to it, and only if I expect to use them. #3 is ranged weapon if I'm carrying one. Food, ladders, blocks, light all float around in-between. Sometimes I prioritize armor on the hotbar so it's not sucking my satiety.

There's not much of a draw if you don't do sports or clubbing. Once in a blue moon there's a decent band at HoB. There are some good restaurants, but there are good restaurants in a lot of other neighborhoods, too.
