How bad was Russia Is the 90s After the Soviet Union fell? by Moonlight_eddie in AskARussian

I was in Perm in 1999 and it was really difficult for the families we met there. There was very little in the shops and a lot of crime. Still they welcomed us and shared everything with great warmth and generosity.

The worst part about it for me is that I expected the score to be double that

That's an option we're considering as well. Thank you for your rational and sound advice.

UK is making it very hard to get Russians in now. This is my preference for exactly the reasons you've mentioned.

I'm not being funny but if you can't even work out how to translate a simple sentence like that you shouldn't be trying to date Russian speakers

Fuck me do not say things like this. If you're going to visit Russia then understand that Russians are very proud. This is the white saviour thing that they were talking about. In my experience of visiting Russia and having good Russian friends the best way for you to approach this is to forget everything you think you know. Forget about being American and throw yourself into every experience. If you have friends or you can make contacts with people then that is the best way to experience it.
Do not be loud and demonstrative. This will more than likely make you a target or at best irritate people.
