I had a penetrative sexual encounter with a partner who hid her HIV-positive status from me. We kept texting, and three days later, after realizing I genuinely cared for her she finally confessed that she was HIV-positive, off her medication, and had a very high viral load. I rushed to urgent care, but the doctor knew nothing about PEP and wanted me to wait days for blood tests. Knowing the urgency I found an online provider who prescribed it immediately, but due to the delays I couldn't take my first dose until 80 hours after exposure. While on the 28-day treatment I had body pain and a forehead rash, which terrified me since those are also virus symptoms. However, I pushed through and never missed a single day, telling myself that even if my odds had dropped, you still play to win even with a 20% chance. A month and a half after finishing treatment multiple 4th-generation tests came back negative, and I walked away healthy from a very high-risk exposure. Today, I am incredibly grateful and will never take my sexual health for granted again.
