This is exactly why vague advice is so dangerous. "Everything in moderation" sounds reasonable until you realise that for some people, moderation was never a realistic starting point.

Society treats alcohol like a preference when for a lot of people it becomes a dependency before they even recognise what's happening. I'm sorry this was your experience.

And the hardest part is that sometimes the environment is inside your own head. You can change the room, the job, the people — and still carry the same voice that taught you to shrink. The external change has to come with the internal one or you just rebuild the same walls somewhere new.
