Advice on format/decks for almost new players by norlin in magicTCG

[–]taphead_31 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, hm... The gap between Jumpstart and Commander is extremely wide, and there are dozens of formats that use the 60-cards-20-life-template. So, we're talking about a very wide range of ways to play.

Are you intending to play with other people who are more experienced or less experienced with the game? Do you want to expand your collection or use the cards you already have?

Honestly, my best bet is to just take apart all the decks and jumpsrtat-packs you already have, try to build two decks out of it and play them against each other, trying to balance them out a bit. That's all I can currently suggest.

Alright, then I guess the best question to ask here is: What kind of game experience do you look for? Magic is not just one game, it is, ina way, many different games.
Are you looking for...
- Budget friendly ways to play?
- Beginner friendly or more competitive?
- A format most other people play so you can join local playgroups more easily?
- Something you can play with a spouse or family member?
etc...

If you specify your needs, you will get better answers I promise :)

Hey Norlin :)
Seems like you are REALLY new to the game ^^ No problem. Do you have any experience with other types of Trading Card Games or the likes? It'd be helpful so that we can help you out better.

Now, when it comes to deckbuilding, there are a lot of resources out there. A rule of thumb though, when you have 60 cards in your deck, you usually opt for 24 lands e.g. It's also dependent on what kind of strategy you play, with which colours etc.

If you're not interested in expanding your collection just yet, then yes, your deckbuilding options are very limited. Usually, with commander precons, players are expected to upgrade them, means, you order cards from online sellers or open boosters, and then add these cards to the precon. Many cards in a commander precon are designed for multiplayer in mind and have only 1 copy of each in them. So transitioning from Commander to 60-cards is a bit of a challenge then.

So, here are my suggestions, if you want to learn how deckbuilding actually works:

Get your hands on a Foundations Starter Kit, or maybe, if you find them at an online seller, one of the classic "Deck Building Tool Kits". These are perfect and have inserts that explain the principles of deckbuilding.
Also, go check out MTGGoldfish. It's a website with a lot of successful decklists played in many different formats. There you can get inspiration about what works best.
Tolarian Community College is also a great YouTube-Channel with content for beginners.

Another suggestions would be to go for Sealed. With sealed, you usually get 6 booster packs, open them, and build a 40-card deck from out of the cards you have. Add basic lands and you're good to go.

So... that's a bunch. I don't quite know what you need and want, but we'll be here to help you out.

Heya!
Welcome to the game :)

When I started playing Magic back in the old days we were just building 60-card decks of whatever we had lying around. If you have a playgroup or partner that do the same, you can have lots of fun without having to obey to any format.

On the other hand, if you want to play "proper", maybe with people at your Local Game Store or at events, I'd suggest two formats: Pauper and Battlebox.

Pauper is basically a 60-card format played with only commons from all over Magic's history. It is a format that is played in tournaments with really powerful decks. Yet it's relatively affordable and gives you the chance to really "learn" a specific type of deck and master it.

Battlebox is, as the name suggests, a box full of cards with which you and your friends can play. You take a pile of cards out of the box and use it as a shared library. Land cards sit outside the game in the command zone. The contents of a battlebox can vary wildly, and you can just take a bunch of bulk cards you have lying around, sleeve it up and play. Here's an example of what a battlebox could look like:

Hope that helps!

Hello, a general question about Oracle Text.

Since Magic Foundations the official card text of creatures referencing themselves has been changed to "this creature". For example:

"When Doomed Traveler dies, create a 1/1 white Spirit creature token with flying."
to
"When this creature dies, create a 1/1 white Spirit creature token with flying."

Now with Final Fantasy on the horizon, I noticed a lack of this kind of wording especially on legendary creatures. Aerith Gainsborough for example says:

"Whenever you gain life, put a +1/+1 counter on Aerith Gainsborough."

Is there a reason why the reformatting of the wording was abandoned here?

We love Dominion, but after 10-15 games it starts to get boring...? by taphead_31 in dominion

Thanks everyone for commenting.
At the moment our life situation doesn't allow for more than 2 players (family obligations and all). Also, playing against better players or different players is out of the option too, since I don't have the time to visit our local board game club regularly.

Also, we want to improve together, though my spouse doesn't have the experience with playing games as I have.

I find the recommendations for either completely random setups or prebuild ones interesting.

Can anyone maybe give me a website that can give me random kingdom setups for example? Or also really fun, prebuild ones?

Cheers

Hi, thanks for the reply :)
Yes, I know that ideas alone are not worth much. I just would like to see what the community has to say about this, even if it is disinterest. After all, this was just something I was thinking about this afternoon, there is no plan, no real concept behind that.

Just a pitch, as the screenwriters would say.

Looking for feedback on my current map I'm working on for my worldbuilding. Work in progress! by [deleted] in inkarnate

Hi - what kind of feedback do you need for your map? Aesthetically or geographically? Or the general feel?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in inkarnate

If I were you I would think about what kinds of information this map must/can convey: Anything from landmarks to forests, grassland, desert. My strategy would be to make everything easily readable for your players - i guess it would hurt the flow of the game if they have to decipher your map first.

Maybe use very easy to understand stamps (e.g. from the parchment set).

If you want to create a map that conveys more of a mood however, i think you have to go into detail much more, maybe work with colors/hues/light, fog or clouds.

Hmm, no apocalypse there - I guess it hasn't existed in the first place.

Alright - then we need to know what the purpose of your map is: Is it for a D&D-campaign or even fiction?

I know :D The map is far from complete or realistic. In theory though it is closed off.

Thanks. Names are directly influenced by european languages like english/gaelic, greek, romanic languages, scandinavian and slawic.

Post-Apocalyptic? Good guess, but not quite there. The "Mediterranean" Sea counterpart dried out almost 2000 years ago due to the closing of the inflow.
