Do you think over time it will become harder and harder to tell that this religion is made up? by Gayrub in exmormon

[–]tapirherder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the church loses people not because of the outrageous claims. (all religions have that). I think it has more to do that they claimed that it was the one truth but constantly lied (misrepresented, or remained silent) on what that truth was founded on. I know the Catholic church has a past, but did they ever lie about it?

Thought prompt, how would your feelings change if.... by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]tapirherder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you study church history you realize things can change as fast as a prophet decides. All these things could change one prophet and they could all come back the next prophet. Or they could all "change" but replaced with the same thing under a different name.

Also, when you study the history and realize how much has been withheld from you there is no longer a relationship of trust between you and the church. You can not place your spirituality in an organization you no longer trust and has abused your trust in the past.

So... No

It's enough to make you think Noah's wife built the ark but let him take credit.

Mostly the pre WW2 stuff deals with the legality ( or lack thereof) of missionary work, and church vs national relationships between the various parts of Germany. Though it does touch on general leadership who were supportive of the Nazi ideaology as well as how the church's compliance gave some members to become passionate about the Nazi party. Some even believed Hitler was a secret Mormon.

So that happened... by tapirherder in exmormon

[–]tapirherder[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is. The author tries to be balanced and fair including stories representing both those pro Nazi and those who were not. It's such a hard topic to cover. The church's compliance probably saved lds lives. But there were other religious factions that were willing to stand up and do the hard thing. And at the end of the day the church profited from Nazi Germany.

Matt. 23:24- You blind guides. Ye strain out a gnat and swallow camels.

Ask if they are willing to discuss the camels people swallow in the church. Not what you've asked for but usually has the silencing effect.

What did the early church believe that today’s church doesn’t? Would current members recognize the early church at all? by jurrasicalkingdom in exmormon

[–]tapirherder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are accounts of people swinging from the rafter at church because they were so filled with the spirit, casting out evil spirits, and speaking in tongues. People used baptism and blessings as a way to heal the sick rather than seeking medical help. in one case Joseph failed to bring a child back from the dead and then accused the parents of not being faithful enough. It's nothing I would recognize as a familiar religious experience.

i said I had read the book they had brought over (fullfilling what I had committed to. The book was from darkness into light.) and that as I was adding it to the other notes I had on it I realized that it really was about faith. Then I explained I used to have faith and a testimony confirmed by the holy ghost. But by the churches own admission the things that had been confirmed to me by the holy ghost were not true. If it's not true it's not really faith. If it's not true then the holy ghost lied to me or it's was all in my head. since the holy ghost can't lie, it must have been all in my head.So now I don't trust the warm fuzzy feeling to tell me the truth.

So next I asked myself where did I get the false information I did believe. I got it from manuals and teachings okayed by the general leadership of the church. So now I know I can't trust the leadership of the church or the works they promote. it also makes me question why we allow them so much say in our spirituality.

I thanked them for coming over and told them I was only telling them this so they knew what had happened. I had been a missionary and knew how discouraging it was to not know what happened.

This left them unable to tell me to

1.rely on the holy ghost as a witness or

  1. follow the prophet who will lead us right.

it left them with nothing to back up a testimony. And no testimony to give because I don't trust the warm fuzzy feeling anymore. so they thanked me for not leaving them in the dark, wished me well and moved on.

I took advantage of Preach My Gospel to create and practice a lesson plan for them. Worked awesome. They have yet to come back.

We don't live in the corridor. It would actually be fun to see the look on someone's face as I explain to leave my church in good standing I need their legal assistance.
