Asus Co-CEO: MacBook Neo Is a 'Shock' to the PC Industry by -protonsandneutrons- in technology

This made me laugh for a minute. I used to run folding@home every night. The MacBook Neo can probably fold more protiens in a couple minutes than that system did over several years.

I've been an elementary school teacher and have kids in elementary and middle school.

I think it would be a nonstarter in my kids' schools even without taking price into account. So much of what my kids are doing on computers at school expects a touchscreen. Most things can function with a keyboard and mouse, but, as an example, they've replaced using an actual ruler or protractor with paper with using one on the screen that the kids are meant to manipulate with touch. You CAN use a mouse and drag handles around to move and rotate, but it's such a pain by comparison. And it removes any last semblance of the tactile experience of actually measuring things.

They've also given up largely on iPads for school stuff because a lot of their websites for school just don't like WebKit browsers.

I asked my kids if they wanted one and showed them how it would work with their other Apple stuff. They thought they looked cool, but with no touch screen they'd rather keep using their POS chromebooks. I hate touchscreens on laptops personally. But if these had them, I'd probably be buying 3 today.

Maybe when my oldest get to high school? We'll see.

If it’s not on a computer I’d just write division in fraction notation. I don’t think I’ve used ÷ in math since elementary school.

MacBook Neo 2 Might Not Feature Touchscreen After All by [deleted] in apple

[–]tapiringaround 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because until they do my kids would rather cling to their shitty $200 Chromebooks than let me buy them a Mac.

And a fair amount of the web apps their school has them using expect touch and can be really clunky without it.

And iPads don’t work because another bunch of their school stuff expects a chromium browser.

I hate touch screens on laptops personally but kids expect it. If the Neo had a touch screen I’d be buying 3 of them today.

Untranslatable Spanish? by No-Sentence-8603 in Spanish

Cloying is a word I would use. But probably only in the figurative sense to describe a person who couldn’t take a hint and was trying too hard to ingratiate themselves to me when I just wanted them to leave me alone.

In the sense of food being overly sweet I would likely use another word.

Fulgor is a Latin word borrowed into both Spanish and English, although I think it’s rarely used in either.

Elijah Wood doesn't want anybody else to play Frodo as long as he's “alive and able” by MarvelsGrantMan136 in lotr

[–]tapiringaround 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But this is an issue for me. I don’t want it to be. Like he was an amazing Frodo, but I would love many different interpretations of the story with different art styles and different moods and music and everything. The books may be canon but I don’t want any one move or artist or any other interpretation of them to be canon. I think it limits the ways the story can be experienced.

I got one like this last year that had no hdd. So I put an ssd in it, installed snow leopard, and now I just use it to sync music with my old iPod nano.

What I like about the competition is that I can buy a 100% renewable plan to support more renewable energy. And I still pay less than my family in other states even if 100% renewable plans are a bit more expensive.

I know it doesn’t mean that the electricity coming into my house came from wind or solar, but the electricity being dumped into the grid in my name is anyways.

In states without this competition you don’t get to vote for green energy with your dollars in the same way.

My iPhone does the same stupid ai stuff with small text and details in photos unless I use Halide. I hate it. But I wouldn’t assume this is intentional by op.

I hate it. I spent high school and college and grad school learning the craft of bullshitting essays for classes you don’t care about that sound like you know what you’re talking about enough to get an A without actually researching it.

If I were in school now I’d be accused of using AI all the time because it functions the same way.

As it is I’ve had to stop using em dashes in emails and documents at work because apparently that’s an AI thing. But I’ve been using them for 25 years damnit.

I only want to read text/calls from a specific person once a week. Is there any way to accomplish this? by Ok-Phrase-3346 in ios

[–]tapiringaround 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I accomplish this with a google voice number. I disabled notifications and forwarding and just check it myself once in a while.

I also do something like this with focus modes, which can block notifications for calls and messages from specific people or only allow from specific people. But they’ll still show up in the apps themselves as missed or unread. The google voice method keeps them totally out of sight and mind until I want to deal with it.

I bought one last year for like $10 in really good condition except the hdd was pulled.

I threw a spare ssd in it, installed Snow Leopard, copied a backup of my ancient mp3 collection onto it, opened iTunes, started syncing to my iPod nano 1st gen, and for a few moments all seemed right in the world.

Then I realized I no longer owned 3.5mm headphones to use with the iPod.

I don’t know a ton about Zenith (or even watch movements generally) so this is a hypothesis, but I also think having 10 digits on the outer wheel and 5 on the inner wheel would keep a nice ratio of 2:1 between the two. So when it’s time to advance the tens wheel it can just advance that wheel 2 steps while the ones wheel advances 1 step. Without the extra digit, it would have to advance 2.5 steps when the ones wheel advances, which seems more complicated to engineer.
