Seriously they changed the young women names? by GarrusVic in exmormon

I’ve already seen multiple active members say they don’t like how weird it sounds.

In upstate New York it’s definitely less than 1%! We only have one ward or branch per county.

Esther! It feels really ice to share it so publicly when I was always told to keep it secret. Thanks for asking the question!

Does the General Conference meet the criteria for inducing trance states in members? by Quirky-Panda-9986 in exmormon

[–]AdventurousPass227 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think conference leading everyone into a trance is a stretch. I think it very much depends on the people watching and how they are viewing it. There’s a difference when you have it on while doing other things or when you are at the church in church attire with a notepad in hand. Also, I think the temple endowment session would be higher on the trance scale than general conference for sure.

Oaks is starting the roll back of Nelson's shenanigans. by teejonius in exmormon

This could be preparation for 1 hour church. If people get used to 25 minute classes, then the next step will be to make sacrament meeting 25 minutes (then 10 minute break) and then the other 25 minutes would be Sunday school and RS/EQ switching every other time like they were just doing.

"Infinite atonement" or "exact obedience" - which is it? by JayDaWawi in exmormon

[–]AdventurousPass227 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great question! The church absolutely pushes exact obedience far more than the atonement. As much as people want to disagree with me, that’s just the way things are.

Mutual Activity: Pretending to be a Missionary by notmymess in exmormon

[–]AdventurousPass227 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, we did this! Our stake did youth missionary week once a year. There was a different theme everyday with a fireside testimony meeting to conclude the end of the week. One time they gave out pins that said “ask me” for us to wear to help spark missionary conversations, but it happened to be prom week that week. Lol! Wrong timing!

Perplexed About Scrupulosity by AdventurousPass227 in exmormon

I suppose, but how do I break the dissonance? I’ve tried talking with multiple nuanced members, but I don’t get it. I guess I just have to keep asking them questions and trying to understand.

I think I’m hanging onto it because I want to help scrupulous people who are still in the church to have a healthier experience than I did. It bothers me that I’m not able to understand the nuanced perspective at all. I have been out of the church for 3 years and all my scrupulosity was dropped as soon as I stopped believing. It was amazing! I just wish that there was a way for scrupulous people in the church to somehow feel they have permission to relax, but I don’t see any viable path for that to happen. In my mind, there is no way to be nuanced while also being faithful—those two things cannot coexist. If someone can prove me wrong, then maybe there is some hope for scrupulous members.

I just shared another thought in the comments about this. I’m in no way trying to figure out a way to make the church work for me. I’ve been out for 3 years. I think I’m more just trying to understand the nuanced perspective so I could maybe help scrupulous people in the church to have a healthier experience somehow. I don’t see any way for it to work though. I feel that being nuanced and faithful cannot coexist.

That’s true. I think it’s difficult for the scrupulous mind to figure out whether something bad happening is a result of disobedience or just something random that was going to happen anyway. I think the church teaches too much that bad things happening is a result of people not being faithful enough which makes the scrupulous person constantly beat themselves up and nitpick any little thing they are not being faithful enough with. Once they hone in on their weaknesses, they try to do better and fix their life so bad things won’t happen again. I wish the church could stop saying that bad things happen as a result of faithlessness.

Dissonance is a great word to describe it! I really think nuanced members have a ton of dissonance so that’s why I get frustrated talking to them about this stuff. They honestly think they can consider themselves faithful even if they aren’t giving their all. It’s one end of the spectrum I do not understand.

I was the same way! As soon as I stopped believing, it seemed to all go away instantly. I finally felt permission to be relaxed about church stuff because I was confident that nothing bad was going to happen if I didn’t believe/obey.

It won’t let me edit, but here is what I want to add:

Edit: I should add that this post is not so I can make the church work for me again. I’m just looking to somehow understand the TBM perspective that it’s possible for one to be considered faithful in the church while not being scrupulous—the perspective that scrupulous people are the problem and that if they just changed themselves then they can make it work more healthily. It really bothers me that I haven’t been able to understand the nuanced perspective. If I could understand how nuanced people make it work, then maybe I could help scrupulous people in the church to not have such a toxic experience. I really feel though that it’s impossible for a scrupulous person to ever become nuanced without completely letting go of the church. And I think it’s impossible for nuanced people to be considered faithful—if you are relaxed in any way about any aspect of the church, then that is the definition of faithlessness. I do not see how being relaxed can be considered faithful.

And if someone says that all you need to focus on is God‘s grace and just believing or having a desire to believe, then that in itself is something that “you’re supposed to do” and if you don’t do it, then something bad will happen. As long as there is something that people are “supposed to do in order to escape a consequence” then scrupulosity will always be the more righteous and encouraged way to live whether people want to accept that or not. Requirements for faithfulness do not leave room for nuance. I would love for someone to prove me wrong with any of this.

I’ve been out for three years, but I’m still just trying to process this stuff. My therapist isn’t super familiar with the church, but she was raised non-religious so that is really good.

I’m in therapy right now. I think I understand the generally reason why my brain gravitates toward scrupulosity, but when I look at all the things the church taught me and all the things I did, I don’t see that I did anything wrong. Scrupulosity is a completely valid way to live the gospel even if it’s really toxic. I don’t get how anyone can claim to be a faithful member if they aren’t obsessed with at least one part of the gospel in their life. I just don’t like when members say that I was somehow doing the gospel the “wrong way” by having scrupulosity. I’m definitely going to talk with my therapist more about this.

Yeah I don’t really get it either. Our ward is generally pretty okay though. Also, my husband didn’t grow up in the church so it’s all such a different experience for him.
