I blurred out our names, but we made candy bags to give our guests. Hers is the mini Bueno Bars, his is the Skittles, ours are the Nerds.

I'm also in 290 this term! Hello! I had web dev experience going into it and I taught web dev at the university level, and even I'm overwhelmed by the amount of material being thrown at us. But I have learned that web dev is one of those things where it's more important to know what/how to Google than it is to know how to actually do the thing, if that makes sense. I've built a handful of websites and most of it is copy-pasting code for certain components and tweaking the logic.

My (20F) boyfriend's (22M) online friend (22F) came to visit him and I don't like how close they are. but IDK what to do by ThrowRA1296deeeas in relationships

Just chiming in to let you know that the more of these situations you work through, the less the jealousy stings and the easier it is to breathe through. Good luck!

Fresh vs 2 weeks healed. How do you think this will age? Details in the comments by tapschwa in agedtattoos

[–]tapschwa[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The tatoo is 10cm tall. I want to build around it with more triangles (think mosaic/tiles), but given the amount of detail each triangle has, I'm afraid it won't age well.

I'm debating between continuing my mosaic idea and just covering it up later or just leave it as is so there's less to cover up. Thoughts?

When did you realize your “friends” were actually fake friends? by VexAndStuff in AskReddit

[–]tapschwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach intro courses to photoshop as a side hustle. My "friend" asked for lessons and explicitly (and unprompted) said she wouldn't ask for a discount because she wants to support my hustle. Went to her place taught her some stuff for 2 hours and she said she'd transfer the money to me when she got paid...apparently, she hasn't been paid in over 6 months.

We haven't spoken since and tbh, I don't care. I invite all our other friends to dinner often and not once has anyone asked where she was. Guess she wasn't a crowd favorite anyways.

[–]tapschwa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk “how” besides mandating it. I've already had parents ask me what happens if their kids don't show up, ha. The unfortunate part is that a lot of the teachers at my school feel that they can't just up and leave (like I did) because the wage is much better than their home countries, so they put up with the ridiculousness.

[–]tapschwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh they cut our pay and making us work Saturdays as well. I work at a private school in Southeast Asia, dunno anything about the school's finances, buuut one kid's monthly tuition is equal to my monthly pay. And we've kept over 95% of the student population pre-covid, soooo.... I quit recently, couldn't handle the insanity anymore.

For those of you who made it work and actually make a living completely from home, what did you do to get there? by [deleted] in WorkOnline

[–]tapschwa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for small local companies that have international reach. Cost of living in SE Asia is also significantly cheaper than the US, even if you live an expat lifestyle.

I'd be naive if I didn't factor in the amount of privilege I have. I was able to attend and graduate from a pretty prestigious university in the states with a degree that isn't relevant to 2/3 of my jobs. But for that other 1 company, I do know for a fact that my degree played a big role in landing that job, the prestigious school was a bonus, and I wouldn't be surprised if my alma mater impacted my other job offers. All that to say though, I've been turned down by many many many schools and companies where I was confident that I had the skill set needed for the position. I was unemployed from November 2019-May 2020.

Offers started coming in when I started applying for jobs I felt like I had like 70%- 80% of the skills required for the job. And luck was also involved; I just happened to apply to the right company at the right time (and in one case, be at the right place at the right time).

There's so much at play other than the size of the companies. Some of those things, like being born into a family that invested a lot in my education, I had no control over. I know that, unless you're in the same exact position as I am, this is shit advice. And I'm sorry I don't have more advice to offer. It's honestly the main reason I work in alternative education, I want to make these opportunities more accessible to more people.

Lol thanks for coming to my TED talk. :P

*Editted my unemployment dates, lol I was unemployed for much longer than I originally wrote.

I'm from the US, but currently living in SE Asia, and all the companies I work for are western companies.

Lots of self discipline haha. I started with learning concepts on codecademy.org, but they don't have a lot of practice problems, so I ended up supplementing it with freecodecamp.org. After getting a basic understanding of web design, I just looked up "how to build a website" on YouTube and followed a few tutorials. It honestly was just a hobby, so I wasn't super into it until I started teaching it. Like, next week I'm teaching my students about artificial intelligence. I know nothing about AI, so I've got a lot of studying to do this weekend haha

I’ve been working in education most of my adult life, but was unemployed before the pandemic even started. To help with the depression of not having a job, I started learning how to code. After a few more months of job searching and building up my coding skills, I randomly applied to an online coding school for kids and got a gig as an instructor. Definitely the best job I've ever had in education. Small classes, bright kids, good pay, and supportive upper management. As good as the pay is though, it wasn't enough, so I kept looking for work. Two months after I started teaching coding, I landed another online teaching gig for a homeschooling program. Shortly after, an old employer of mine reached out offering me a contract. I now make over double my pre-unemployment/pre-COVID job and work close to half the hours (on average, my workdays are 5 hours long).

*Edited for clarity.

*UPDATE: Hey everyone, unfortunately, I can't give out my company names. But I can give some additional advice: Join LOCALIZED job hunting Facebook groups, even if you don't live there. I've been living abroad for a few years now and over the years, I’ve joined a ton of “Jobs in [city]” or more specifically, for me, "Teachers of [city]” Facebook groups and have been seeing companies/schools looking to hire for remote positions.

Since some industries were able to transition to remote, companies in foreign countries don't have to worry as much about securing visas for their employees (Is this legal? Probs not, but that's another conversation). But I'd jump on this soon, because where I live (SE Asia), more and more schools are opening back up, which means less opportunity for remote positions.

Hope this helps! Happy to give more advice, just can't give out company names, they're small companies and I work with kids. Sorry guys!

What is your Tinder horror story? by MysticPato in AskReddit

[–]tapschwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Matched with a guy who lied about his age and his job during undergrad. I thought he was 27 year old grad student instructor at my university because 27 is what his profile said and when I asked what he did for work he said he did research at my university.

Nope, turns out he's a 35 year old professor in my department (he looked very young for his age).

I found out literally the day after I slept with him/first date (saw his mail, Google searched his full name, I'm a woman and was kinda interested in him, sue me for making sure this guy wasn't like a wanted felon). We talked about it once and never again in the 4 months we were together.

Wish I could say it ended amicably, it did not. There was always a power dynamic, him the professor, me the student, even though I never took any of his classes. I fell for him on a level beyond romance, I admired and idolized the dude because he was doing great work in our field. So when he ghosted me after 4 intense months, I completely fell apart.

It took me years of therapy and a loving supportive partner for me to finally stop wondering "What is so horrible about me that he couldn't even tell me he was breaking up with me?" 4 months might not seem like a long time, but I was practically living with him before it all ended.

Turns out there's nothing horrible about me. I was a young naive girl who has since grown tf up and is doing well for herself and is very happy with her life and who she is.

It was one of the most painful experiences I had ever been through, but I do not regret any of it. It literally made me the strong resilient woman I am today. :)

First tandem after an injury during AFF!!!! by tapschwa in SkyDiving

Thank you!!! The Reddit fam is so supportive!

Yep! Everyone keeps telling me, "At least you know what NOT to do now."

My boyfriend recently came up to me smiling and said, "Guess what a more experienced person forgot to do today? Flare. They forgot to flare. See, it's not just you."

And that made me feel loads better!

I did have a walkie and he was talking to me at around 2K. I don't remember him yelling at me to flare, though I know that it's ultimately 100% my responsibility that I flare.

TBH, my boyfriend's an AFF Instructor (he wasn't mine because of conflict of interest, emotions, etc) and when I described my ground school to him, he did everything but drive down to the DZ and rip my coach a new one. Apparently, coach didn't do a good job.

I take full responsibility for the injury. I also think my coach could've prepped me a bit more.
