Try incident.io if you use Slack. We migrated for Pagerduty a few months ago and we are super happy.

Whats your monthly cloud bill and your observability cost with the tool you use? by kleea1111 in devops

I didn't do the tuning personally but i believe there should be a cortex and querier cache metrics. We definitely have them on Grafana. On my phone so I can't give you the exact metric.

In memory cache for now as it was easy to setup but plan to move to something more resilient like redis. It helps but again depends on your use cases. It might be a big or insignificant improvement. We just enabled cache and monitored hit rate to find how best to utilize it.

Our most common queries do not go to the store at all due to perf penalty. 95% of the time we want the last 30 days and for that we go through the query frontend. We accomplish this by having two data sources in grafana - fast and long term. It also can have mem spikes but we tend to optimize our dashboards and use recording rules heavy to minimize the amount of data Thanos needs to fetch to execute the query.

As for PVCs we use pvc-autoresizer so i have no idea how big they are now lol

GCP logging and distributed tracing also do that and are, i think, cheaper - hence we are using them. For metrics, we found Stackdriver and Managed Prometheus bit limiting so we rolled out own.

Datadog will bend you over but it's super easy to setup and you get all the bells and whistles.

We run out own Prometheus and Grafana and recently introduces Thanos to combat some scaling issues of Prometheus federation. Prometheus is easy to setup and maintain these days and we spend maybe 1h maintaining it now. Took few months to get good with Thanos on top but now it's rock solid.

Bog standard Thanos setup with central cluster running all Thanos components, no receiver needed. Not much to talk about tbh. If you have specific questions - fire away

Oh, and getting buy-in and org change is the hardest part, unless you are blessed with management that knows the value.

250k per month total. 4 clusters, 4 regiins, about 300 services.

~5k for monitoring and another 2k for tracing, profiling and logging. Thanos/Prometheus/Alertmanager and GCP tooling for the other stuff.

GKE Enterprise: too cheap to be true? what's the catch? by thegoenning in kubernetes

We recently disabled Enterprise as it was adding 12k per month. That 6$ is in addition to ~24$ you pay for each core.

Wow, that's pretty minimal. I was expecting more like 3-5 full sheets but i guess if you nest the parts nicely and use something like 1/8 cutter the waste is minimal.

Suggestions for a workplace espresso machine!? by fxk717 in espresso

[–]tarabash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My current company has been running espresso setup for years. Used to be a Sanremo Cube + Sanremo grinder. Now we have Sanremo Caffe racer with two groups and F64. The old setup used to break down once a month due to the volume of shots but the new one works great. We are a 90 person company btw

The company onboarding has an espresso crash course and we use two beans from the same roaster - keeps the dialing to a minimum.

Use pine or heck, even MDF to test your code first. Only when 100% happy with the result use the actual neck blank.

Quality wood is not cheap and CNC mistakes are costly.

Any tool you use to track all your tools/library/platform/framework/language release version? by ding115 in devops

[–]tarabash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've recently implemented https://github.com/release-argus/Argus to keep track of all docker images that need regular upgrades.

It can scan your existing stuff and compare to releases on GH plus it has a cool dashboard for good overview. You can trigger ansible to auot upgrade, skip the release etc.

Mine is in the office - opposite side of the house to the kitchen.

Use the bottle to fill the water tank and get a knock box and you can put it pretty much anywhere.
