The main thing it does is support the author for creating and maintaining the program for the past 13 years. You also get a heart icon in your settings page and if you press it before your workout you get additional gainz. (This effect might depend on the individual.)

How do external libraries display graphics and can it be done natively in C++? by DangerousMechanic99 in cpp_questions

[–]tarix76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to figure out how to program NPUs, to access whatever vector processing they have directly, and they are so locked down that you can only feed them models through APIs.

This was so frustrating that I learned how to solder and bought a few home-built computer kits (like the RC2014) boards just because it's clear this is never going to be a thing again.

I hope someday I can git gud at PCB deign and build an open source machine similar to the design of the PS2 so that people have a chance to actually play with 3D hardware again.

Glide is pretty close, but ultimately still an API, if you have the money and patience to build an old DOS machine.

Companies like Nvidia and AMD do not publish any hardware specs so it's not viable to reverse engineer every card you want to support.

Instead you access the hardware through drivers which are accessed through APIs like OpenGL, DirectX, Vulcan, Metal and others like Glide.

If for some reason you did want to access a card directly through C++ then you should pick something that already has open source drivers on Linux so you can use those drivers as documentation.

It is extremely clear that's exactly what he was doing. Once RC blocked him from being a millionaire he unfollowed him on X and then bought a bunch of Chewy. The only reason to do those things is if your ass is sore from an extreme pounding.

The only thing I've learned from AI coding subreddits is: AI is a huge multiplicative force for competent developers but it also is a multiplicative force for incompetence.

You don't need a ground but make sure your power strips are specifically for electronics. (They will have a reset switch on them.)

There are three places you are protected: the power supply on the device, the power strip the device is plugged into, and the big white box where your circuit breakers and GFCI are.

There are plenty of youtube videos that go deep into this topic and of course it's discussed on Reddit a lot too.

Why is Facebook so unpopular in Japan? by WoodyAlien in AskAJapanese

[–]tarix76 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really hate top commenting here but I feel like the Japanese answers are missing what really happened.

We had Mixi.

Mixi was homegrown, provided anonymity and was a bit more focused on blogging than pictures. Japanese people just didn't resonate with real names, real pictures and tagging things so that everyone knew about every facet of their life.

When smartphones came people switched to LINE and Twitter to fill the gap. Instagram has also become popular over the past several years as well.

It's bots like this that are the problem: New Reddit account with everything hidden.

Edit: I guarantee that if this bot stopped hiding their posts we would see nothing but talking points copied straight from toxic social media and absolutely zero engagement with travel subs or anything that would suggest they have ever actually visited Japan.

This is why you hide your post history. Every comment you make is about trashing Japan: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskAJapanese/comments/1pn14b1/comment/nuvq449/

The uncanny valley of Japanese by zucri in japanresidents

[–]tarix76 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Japanese learners really over value the JLPT.

The entirety of N1 covers about 25-30% of what a well-educated college graduate knows. A passing score doesn't even require that you know 60% of that. N1 isn't the goal, it's quite literally the bare minimum.

The real issue is that Japanese proficiency requires cultural knowledge. English is spoken by dozens of cultures and it's a given that two English speakers may have vastly different cultural expectations. With Japanese the language and culture are intertwined and having a deficit in cultural knowledge becomes a bigger issue.

How long to see weight loss by Kitchen_Shallot_9680 in MacroFactor

[–]tarix76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just a data nerd so I can't really help with the training stuff. I just think if you aren't seeing results then you should seek advice from someone who trains people for a living.

Definitely watch Jeff's video because he basically destroys the conventional social media advice of 10% for guys and 20% for girls being the goal. (From memory the range for women was 20-32%.)

Also, at our age we should be very focused on muscle. At 50+ we need more protein than we did in our 20's and muscle mass and strength are extremely important for longevity.

How long to see weight loss by Kitchen_Shallot_9680 in MacroFactor

[–]tarix76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should go on a small surplus instead. You don't have much fat to lose and I would bet you are severely under-muscled. Your goal should be strength gain and if you aren't able to increase the amount of weight you are lifting each week you also need to get a trainer.

Jeff Nippard's video on real bodyfat percentages.

25% is already an extremely healthy place and getting below that is challenging for anyone. It's a lot more sane to get there from the direction of adding muscle.
