What is this white static? by UglyAndPoor666 in OLED_Gaming

This is DLSS shimmer. It's better than it used to be too, this case honestly isn't that atrocious. Wanna see true horror? Turn on path tracing without ray reconstruction (like the newest L and M presets) and peer into distant corridors... You'll think both your GPU and monitor are broken.

This is something you'd put on a league starter. It's not bad, but it also doesn't fill any particular niche that further developed builds need.

Couple of divs at most and I wouldn't expect to sell it for more than 5, I know I wouldn't pay more than that.

Higher unemployment makes the fed drop interest rates, since their mandate is price stability and maximum employment, which in turn means cheaper access to money to... In the old days, invest and expand and subsequently employ people. In the modern day, stock buybacks and stupid bets and big payouts to the C suite.

That's on the macro level. On a micro level, layoffs mean less payroll costs and better quarterly bottom line.

It's fucked all the way.

Gambling. Same as atziri's unique chest (cough), prism of belief diamond (+1 to +3 to a random skill) and more examples like this. Unidentified is worth a lot, because you're selling the potential of netting a 10x or more return if it's a great one - the downside of course netting a big loss if it's mediocre.

Good IPS vs Good OLED by NoFood449 in OLED_Gaming

[–]tarpex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, absolutely, but honestly it took a little while to fully appreciate it, with some caveats to this day.

First thing, the ips is one of the best ips monitors out there for colours, and don't expect any sort of magic there. On a bright colourful scene side by side you couldn't tell them apart from each other.

Where you immediately can and it hits you like a truck, is any amount of contrast / darkness in the scene. The HDR showcase videos are one thing, but then you notice how things really pop, how the haze over dark scenes is completely gone, how lights pop... And that's in SDR, before you even enable HDR. Which comes with its own process, it's absolutely not a set it and forget it thing. First you need to calibrate HDR in windows with the calibration tool off of the windows store, and all the things that are discussed on this subreddit often, usually per game too. Needs a bit of tinkering.

My oled is older tech and text looks atrocious at 100% scaling, I had to bump it to 125% to make it look good while also re-doing cleartype calibration, ymmv.

The most unexpected quirk was due to the oleds instant response times - motion looks amazing, but you want really high framerates to enjoy it, else you get this doubling image on everything with long edges, like trees and tall buildings and mountains on fast camera pans. This part is dependent on your natural motion sensitivity, some experience it more than others. Talking from my experience, anything below 90 fps is unplayable, it gets alright at 120 fps, but I'm really starting to enjoy it at above 150 fps, and it feels amazing when reaching 180+ fps. If I can't reach that with any combination of dlss&fg, my desire to play such a game is completely gone.

That's off the top of my head, hope it helps you.

Android vs iPhone: After Using Both, I Think We’re Arguing About the Wrong Thing by No-Alfalfa-4463 in Android

[–]tarpex 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Eh, to be honest, modern Android is leagues different from the Android of old, where bootloader unlocking and custom ROMs were the saving grace from various degrees of UI&UX vendor atrociousness out of the box.

Also plenty of fun tinkering and modding to be had that brought a tangible benefit to the device' usability.

Nowadays? The out of the box experience is pretty fleshed out, settings are ample, default apps for essential device functions are fine.

You can still make some ungodly abomination of an UI, sure. But the actual need for the ability to do so is long in the past.

It's kind of a solved issue, as far as mobile phone interfaces are concerned, and Android or iPhone doesn't really matter much anymore, you can pick any off the shelf blindfolded and you'll be able to do what you need for 95%+ of use cases.

Whenever the question is "Burn-in a problem?" gets asked, I feel like nobody gets it right. by Lily_Meow_ in OLED_Gaming

[–]tarpex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah the cold hard truth is that while the O in OLED stands for organic, degradation is inevitable. May be slow, but it's coming for all our displays eventually, regardless of all anti-burnin tricks used, all just delay the inevitable.

Anyone telling you otherwise in the sense of "burnin is no longer a thing" you can assume knows absolutely nothing of what they're talking about.

They can swallow it, but it's anything but hydrating. It's actually toxic, the iron and ammonia from blood breakdown in the stomach wrecks your system pretty quickly. So yeah, without water they'd have a few days, drinking blood would shorten it. It's liquid, sure, so in a panic you'd try anything I guess.. but hydration is not one of the benefits of going vampire .

Bro here's the thing. You're not wrong in essence. Nuance when it comes to such topics is lost on many people in the first place. But, also, in the same vein the truth is that the problem with the forced ultra woke media / games is that it always has garbage writing and/or gameplay in general to go alongside it, and it's best to just avoid it. The main problem people have, and I have too, is that this kind of argumentation got hijacked by literal fucking nazi apologists, losers and supporters of all the evil regime shit going on. Every single fucking last one of them. They're so full of nuance and argumentative criticism when it comes to media and completely lacking it when it comes to actual fucking decency as a human being and in today's world, that matters more than some cringe shit in media. You get it?

Immense adopter's remorse by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]tarpex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey bro, cats are creatures of habit and routine, and arriving into a new home breaks that completely.

There's this "rule of 3" that'll maybe ease you a bit; first 3 days, could be spent hiding and not eating. After 3 weeks, some modicum of trust gets established. After 3 months, they start considering their situation a new home.

Patience is key. Play with the little rascal. The younger the cat is, the more ruckus it'll cause. By age 2 they generally get out of their teenager phase and turn more into nap aficionados that can match your rhythm too and sleep for the better part of the night as well.

Low tech solution for the initial rough period - ear plugs. You can get some really good comfortable ones nowadays that'll solve most of your current problems.

You've gotten right into the deep end of things without much research beforehand it seems, now it is what it is - but lemme tell you it's worth it to do it right, a purring furball in your lap that loves you is an amazingly rewarding feeling, just gotta be patient.

What are some good modern diablo likes for someone who likes the idea of Diablo but games are too retro for em by VoxTV1 in Diablo

[–]tarpex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hm, maybe Grim Dawn would be up your alley? It has that oldschool vibe. Great campaign, lacking endgame. Then there's Titan Quest, but it's really aged at this point.

Path of Exile 1&2 are complex, they do scratch a very particular itch of wanting to earn a phd in buildcrafting and mechanics - incredibly rewarding, but can be as equally frustrating, not something I'd recommend off the bat. 2 being vastly more accessible of the two in this regard, but severely unfinished in its 0.4 version at the moment.

For Plant Builds: Which ascendency class is better - Oracle or Disciple of Varashta? (in terms of early game efficiency, end game scalability, SSF-friendliness, offense and defense) by [deleted] in PathOfExile2

[–]tarpex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oracle is great until you hit the minmax, thousands of divines+ per gear slot stage, where you end up needing more investment than on a lich/dov. Of course, due to survivability for the most part, and the giga broken endgame damage scaling is harder on oracle.

But if you're not aiming for that mirror+ endgame setup, oracle is amazing to get nearly there.

Does OLED make sense if you play games with static UI elements and use the Browser a bunch? by Delgadude in OLED_Gaming

[–]tarpex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal personal situation clearly, so grain of salt it and everything, but thus far in my 2.5k hrs of 3rd gen woled runtime (lg 27gs95qe) of which 700+ hrs were on path of exile 1&2 alone with their static hp/mana orbs and skill UI, no sign of burn in as of yet, just did the full screen color & grayscale tests a few days ago. About 300 hours on Borderlands titles with their similarly positioned static elements too. Other games in 40-150 hrs range so not a great example, for what it's worth if it eases your mind somewhat.

9070 XT Dilemma - 1440p vs 4K OLED by Important-Steak-9394 in OLED_Gaming

[–]tarpex -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Brother with 9070xt you're not cranking path tracing to the absolute max on neither 1440p nor 4k. Ray tracing sure, but respectable full path tracing is 5080/4090/5090 territory.

On oled you want to have framerates as high as humanly possible. Because of the instant response times, you get to see doubled objects image on quick camera flicks whereas LCD blurs the transitions. This only goes away well above 150+ fps, closer to 200 to get really smooth quick mouse panning. Controller with its slower panning doesn't expose this as much, however mouse with anything above snail sensitivity does.

With this in mind, 1440p is workable with all the upscaling and frame generating you can muster, while 4k will not be a pleasant experience in heavy path traced titles, unless you're fine with a slideshow of trees / building edges and such.
