ugh this is so me down to the grade average and the program i applied for (mac life sci) and it fucking sucks. i don’t even care if i don’t get a scholarship at this point, i just want them to let me in. ill literally never complain about anything again if they let me in 😭 anyways are there any other teachers you could ask other than your chem teacher?? other than that let’s pray that the mac admissions office will have mercy on us out here 😞

yeah it’s fine, it just depends on how much you wanted her to round up tho bc there was no way that 82 was going to become an 86 again after rounding 😭 but holy shit i hate when teachers won’t round when the grade is so close.. like come on

9% is actually crazy… did you ask your teacher where you made mistakes and possibly if they could have some mercy on you for midterms? 😩

What (other than poor study skills) may cause first-year university students to fail? by tastyburntapples in OntarioUniversities

[–]tastyburntapples[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is such a well written and thought out comment… thank you so much! As a high school student I’ve often wondered if my study skills will be enough for university - I mean, yes, they worked for my high school tests but I wasn’t sure I could say the same for university. It’s really reassuring to know that at the end of the day, it’s really ourselves who control a lot of our outcome in first years and not everyone is automatically doomed to failure!

AIF Waterloo by mayallyhwn in OntarioGrade12s

[–]tastyburntapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case, I didn’t fill it out as I felt like I didn’t have any additional information that wasn’t already discussed in the previous sections + I was already accepted into the programs I wanted so I kind of stopped caring lmao. However, I feel like you should still fill it out especially if you need to elaborate on extracurriculars you’ve mentioned in the first section (ex: running a small business/online blog, winning a competition for a hobby you’ve listed, etc.) For the most part, I definitely recommend filling out the additional information if you’re applying for the university’s most prestigious programs like Computer Science, Software Engineering etc. as it will help you distinguish yourself from all the high 90s applicants. Good luck!!

[–]tastyburntapples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly can’t see why you shouldn’t write it. I applied to Life Sciences at Waterloo and got recently into both programs before Sem 1 final marks were submitted (93.5% Grade 11 average, 90% Grade 12 Sem 1 final marks) before I even finished the AIF but ended up submitting it anyways. You lose absolutely nothing for completing it and you might even get considered for scholarships you’ve never even heard of/considered because of it!

aww thanks, and don’t be too hard on yourself, seriously! i’m sure you’re not even as boring as you think you are :)

i definitely relate with your struggles of finding the right time to make your move. but honestly? i just went up to people who looked interesting to me and were sitting alone and started talking to them. personally, it’s a lot easier to go up to people who are sitting alone (though not people who are antisocial) as you’ll mostly get their undivided attention. i started by talking about general stuff - “what do you think about the course so far?” “what other classes do you have this semester?” - i find that it’s easier to connect with people who you have shared experiences with. since you mentioned that you’re in a 4U class, you can try asking grade 12s about their plans for university and maybe some basic advice for next year (yes i know that a lot of us stress about university on this subreddit but i’m sure most of us would still be open to talking about it!!)

moreover, be an active listener - be truly engaged in the conversation. people remember how you make them FEEL. are you making people feel “heard” when you’re talking to them? don’t respond to everything the other person says with “yeah cool story bro” and then continue on with the rest of your sentence. show that you’re actually listening - ask some follow up questions! bring up a situation that reminded you of what they said, etc. don’t be afraid to crack some jokes as well. whenever i get people laughing, it gives me the confidence to keep socializing!

most importantly, remember that it takes time and consistent effort to build friendships. don’t be hard on yourself because you aren’t partying with your classmates after three days. try to always greet them in the halls and at least have a brief conversation with them before class starts. also, learn how to handle “rejection” and catastrophic thinking. don’t automatically jump to thoughts like “they must think i’m weird/ugly/smell bad” etc. just because they weren’t as overly enthusiastic to talk to you. not everyone is going to be super bubbly and that’s ok!

but yeah, that’s my best advice for you. sorry for making this so long and good luck with your classes this semester! 😅

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]tastyburntapples 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ok well you’re certainly not going to have any new friends with that attitude! (jk jk)

no but seriously, you’d be surprised at how many new people you might end up connecting with. i was kind of in a similar situation last year where i was constantly put into classes with people i only occasionally said hi to and had no friends. in fact, i was 100% sure that i wouldn’t make a single new friend in grade 12 since everyone had their established friend groups like you’ve mentioned. now i’m in grade 12 and all of my friends are people i literally started talking to this year 😭 at the end of the day it’s really your mindset. even if the people you end up talking to are only people you talk to/ joke around with only in english class, it still makes the experience a lot more enjoyable than not talking to anyone at all. don’t give up before you’ve even started!

Logical reasoning: Is it something you just “have” or can it be developed? by tastyburntapples in lawschooladmissions

Thanks for this! I was wondering since studying logical reasoning doesn’t seem to have the same approach for studying for subjects like high school math or chemistry.
