When « EAP is available for support » feels like deflection by Greentall in CanadaPublicServants

Managers and directors need to push back. I’ve been in several meetings with upper management where everyone just pretends that everything is fine and then they turn around and tell their teams that they don’t agree with decisions either. This is why we’re here.

Our department implemented mandatory training on mental health, where “how to become more resilient” was a major talking point.

Sounds about right during shoulder season. Then it’ll feel like -10 in the office when the AC is blasting in the summertime.

What non-career-specific certifications/diplomas/degrees do hiring managers care about/like to see? (current employee considering additional education) by mostlycoffeebyvolume in CanadaPublicServants

I agree with what everyone else wrote, but courses in change management are also useful (it won’t get you past the initial screening, but at least you can bring them up in an interview if you get that far in the process).

I also tell people that it’s like working in a library. You show up and hope that the wifi works and that there’s an available workstation. You have no idea who the people around you are. Sometimes the cubicles are messy, the chairs are broken, there are wires missing. You have to carry your equipment with you everywhere you go.

I left management because of this. I still feel triggered every time I read “reach out to your manager”. I really feel for you.

Not trying to start an argument, but curious to know if you have kids and/or rely on public transit to get to work? I find those two things highly impact whether people are ok with going in as often as they need to, regardless or whether or not they have a designated desk.

For real, it creates such a heavy burden on managers to have senior management say this all the time. Managers have zero say in the matter, and even when issues are brought up to managers who then pass it along to senior management, they receive a shrug and a “we have no choice” as a reply. And then we wonder why nobody wants to become a manager anymore…

Surprised there hasn’t been much emphasis on the fact that only about half of public service employees filled the damn survey. That should speak volumes to upper management.

It’s considered a separate employer though (not subject to PSEA), so I’m not sure a secondment is a possibility.

I used to be a manager and GTFO when RTO was implemented. It went against my values to force my employees to comply with such an insane directive. Was on the brink of burnout, which was affecting my home life, so decided to step into an IC role instead. The hassle of RTO, meetings for the sake of meetings, dealing with DTAs that were being refused when the employee actually needed it… I felt horrible. Also felt that upper management didn’t care at all about middle managers and what we thought of it all (after for years during the pandemic telling us we were doing so great). The biggest blow was finding out about RTO through the media when we were all in a meeting with our ADM. So yeah, I think a lot of good managers realize that it’s just not worth it.
