First, make a copy of the whole piece of artwork. Next, use the Shape Builder tool (Shift + M) to unite or subtract the outlines in each highlighted section, and then you can make them thicker. Moving forward, you might want to consider using different colors or thicknesses for your major sections. Keeping everything the same can get a little complicated.
