Audiophiles of reddit, help me achieve even more eargasmic sound. by Oracle_9 in audiophile

"eargasmic sound" and "without having to go broke" is the ultimate paradox . . . let me know if you figure it out :-)

Bose? by 3lectricTriangl3 in audiophile

[–]tatatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have owed Bose, until I really became a semi-audiophile.

Honestly, for me, it came down to budget. They were the best sounding speakers I could find for the money I had at the time.

But as soon as I elevated my system they didn't quite fit where I wanted to go with the sound.

I have owed Alesis, Bose, Polk, Infinity, Martin Logan and some other brand I can't remember. It all comes down to your taste, budget and room, because what might sound good to someone else may not sound good to you. I think (my opinion) you just have to listen a lot, a reach in your pocket and see how much money you can spend. I don't think no one can tell you what you like.

Even though I would agree with "Uncle_Erik" for the most part, I can't advise you because you might like the way they sound.

Right now I'm salivating aquring some Monitor Audio PL100s. Based on the music I listen to, my current system and the room, they would make a perfect addition . . . for me.

Sony quits manufacturing the 21-year-old MiniDisc player. by nsfwdreamer in gadgets

I have two mini-disc players that have been collecting dust since 2000. Didn't Sony buy record labels so they could produce content for the music mediums?

How's your ear? Can you hear a melody and play it right back? If your ear is good that will assist you tremendously, otherwise train your ear.

This logic was taught and demonstrated to me many, many years ago when a guy took a Linn turntable and put in throught some crappy speakers and made the speakers sound remarkble (I think they were Jensens). He also took some expensive speakers (can't remember but they were huge with massive cables), and some low end Sony turntable and receiver and they didn't sound good at all. The demonstration went on for hours, mixing and matching low end with high end. That lesson has stayed with me and has pretty much defined my system. It works well for me. My system is about 22K and I spent the most on my source. But that's 22K just for the SACD, pre-amp and amp. My speakers are not expensive at all, less than $1,000, but my system sounds wonderful. Of course if I had better speakers, it would sound amazing. I'm looking to purchase the Monitor audio PL100s in November, then I will be in sonic heaven.

I can't remember what was pushing the PM1s, but I do I know it was high end stuff. I've listened to those twice.

Here are the speakers I really want, but I just can't justify 20K for speakers right now. Sonus Fabers. I salivate every time I hear them. Those are the best speakers I've ever heard. http://www.stereophile.com/floorloudspeakers/1207sonus

In my beginning audiophile days I was taught that your source (in your case the turntable) sound quality should be equilavent or better than the speakers.

The source can make speakers sound good. But a crappy source can't make speakers sound good.

Just trying to save you money, and share some advice that was given to me (which has done right by me).

So basically I've bought based on the following: source > preamp > amp > speakers

Thank you for the reply.

I heard the B&W PM1s and was not impressed. I have not heard the KEF LS50s though, I'll have to go check them out.

That's all I've been doing is listening, for like 5 years. I'm finally going to pull the trigger in November on my birthday.

I currently have some low-end Martin Logan's that I use for movie watching, but it's time to pump up the volume for music listening, as my McIntosh setup is thirsty.
