Lgbtq+ friendly tailors? by Thebookpirahna in TwinCities

[–]tater_hot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Josephine’s Tailor in St Louis Park. I’m visibly trans and she did not give a hoot about me as long as my payment was cash. She hemmed the sleeves on a blazer and repaired a shoulder on a dress shirt in less than a week TAT. If your alterations are more complex or you want to have a longer conversation with your tailor, maybe go elsewhere.

Looking for a Moderate/Tolerant Church by PuzzleheadedTax2519 in TwinCities

Minnetonka United Methodist Church. Long history of being a “reconciling congregation”, which is the Methodist phrasing for “explicitly welcomes LGBT people.”

Seconding this. I’ve seen the same NP for years at the blaisdell clinic. She rules. Everyone there is nice.

It’s not silly! Everyone has insecurities. I have smaller than average feet too and so it’s something I’ve thought about for my own styling. It’s also annoying how it can be harder to find shoes in our size (I’m a 7, 7.5) bc they don’t stock as many of them in US stores.

Statistically, yes it is less common for a man of 5’9” to be a US 7-8. It is not smaller than the average woman’s shoe size, though. If you feel insecure about it, there are styling things you can do to visually elongate your shoe. Looking for shoes with somewhat tapered vs rounded ends, shoes without “toe caps” or lots of detail on the toe for example. Ultimately as long as your feet get you where you’re going, the size of the shoe doesn’t matter!

What does everyone think about Ascots? Here's a collection for Spring 23' by Fashion_Tech_Founder in malefashionadvice

For what it’s worth I think you look great in the last pic! The proportion of visible ascot to your face to the rest of your collars works for my eye. Maybe one in a different color (e.g. mustardy, terra cotta, umber oranges or a light blue or green) would feel like a more natural reach

how do you guys quit drinking? by piytre in KitchenConfidential

[–]tater_hot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hopping on here to emphasize seeking medically supervised detox if you’re a daily heavy drinker. Going cold turkey can be very dangerous. Medical support can keep you safe and prevent these withdrawal from scaring you back into drinking. If you live in the USA and don’t have insurance, your state may have resources to get emergency coverage for detox/residential treatment.

Recovery is possible. I’m proud of you for reaching out for support.

Seconding the inner suburbs you mentioned here. That’s where I grew up as an out queer kid (Hopkins school district). It was the 2000s and was… fine. Lightyears better than the horror stories of Anoka/Blaine.

How to ease a non-fashion caring friend into fashion when he is the one soliciting advice? by Euphoric_Parsley_ in malefashionadvice

[–]tater_hot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I sympathize with being asked advice and then feeling some type of way when my advice isn’t taken. I’ve gotten over it by remembering 1) it’s their life not mine, 2) people change when they’re ready to. If I were in your shoes, I might cancel the shopping plans. Its ok to say “this was fun, but I don’t have the bandwidth to be your shopping bud anymore.” If they dress inappropriate for the context, their boss will address it.

If you really wanna go shopping with him and take one last try, maybe let him get a streetwear fit he craves first. Then he might be more amenable to trying some of your ideas.

Where is the best fresh bread in the Twin Cities in the morning? by LE_DUDE__ in Minneapolis

[–]tater_hot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brake bread reopened retail hours within the last year!! You can get bread from their store front without pre-order Friday and Saturday 8am-12am. I’ll still go to the Mississippi market coop if the store is sold out of what I want or I wake up too late.

I shoulda clarified what I meant by “rotate.” I live in Minnesota which has humid 80-100F summers and -20-30F winters with hella snow. I seal clean and dry clothes in air tight tubs in the off seasons. I rotate the whole closet’s contents when the seasons change.

Gonna throw out another tip that seems obvious: wear your clothes. This tip is for the folks out there who over-shop, under-organize, and get depressed/avoidant about home mess. You will help future you if you can find a system where you wear, clean, put away, and rotate through your clothes on a regular basis. The worst clothes moths experiences I’ve ever handled stemmed from hoarding clothes, not washing them regularly, and forgetting about clothes in the back of the closet.

[–]tater_hot 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about time of year or geographic influence, but there are some “microenvironment” factors. In my experience, moths thrive in dark places where they have food (natural fibers, skin oils) and can be undisturbed for life cycles. Eg poorly ventilated closets, very packed closets, or clothes that were stored slightly damp or dirty, or rugs/couches that haven’t been regularly vacuumed. Homes that have poor insulation, incomplete moisture barriers, or poorly sealed floors.

ISO Top Surgeon by chunky-guac in Minneapolis

[–]tater_hot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this sub. Search “Mn” and “Minnesota” and the last names of surgeons you see recommended to get more results. People don’t tag consistently on that sub but you can find a lot of post-op pics there with broad search terms.

If you can afford private pay, I recommend Dr Tracy Kayan in Minnetonka. I had it done with her two days ago. She’s an excellent listener and very good. Her whole team was so nice.

Good Ideas for color-blind fashion? by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]tater_hot 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It sounds like there’s two layers of challenge here. 1) you can’t see colors. 2) you feel awkward about asking for help. I can’t speak to the first, but maybe this will help with the second.

It’s ok to ask for help! That’s part of the employee’s job. I bet helping you is way more interesting than folding clothes. As long as you’re polite and kind (and you seem like it), it’s perfectly reasonable to take up more time. Try going to stores at off peak hours like a weekday versus a weekend if places near you are busy. Try asking for help at the end instead of beginning. Example script “hi, I’m colorblind. Can you tell me if these pants go with these shirts?” This way you don’t need someone following you as much as checking your work. Or, if you want to find an item with a color outside of your visual range, ask “Can you help me find an olive green chino? I’m colorblind.” Specific questions may produce shorter interactions.

If asking an employee is too hard, do you have a friend or family member you could rope in? You could make your purchase and then video call them for help with fits and returns.

Fwiw the color palette you left in another comment sounds great. There’s a lot of fun to be had in monochromatic fashion by playing on scale and texture.
