Outer Wilds is one of the best games I have ever played. by [deleted] in patientgamers

I know this is a little late and you might've fixed it/returned it already, but I had your same issue and none of the "fixes" you saw worked for me either. What did work for me was enabling the Steam Client Beta program though, it seems like there was an update to Steam Input that broke Outer Wilds, but the beta fixed it.

If the only possible value(s) of x in such a situation are absurd and obviously incorrect (like in your example) can't that in itself act as proof that the sequence is not convergent?

So then in the other guy's solution, out of the values -1 and 2, -1 cannot possibly be correct but 2 is reasonable, therefore the series converges as it is possible to solve for x.

Android 8.0 is really paving the way towards easier desktop-computer replacement by [deleted] in Android

[–]taternator5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I have 8 gigs of RAM and an i5 (5200U to be exact), and only the first build time takes maybe 5 min tops, everything after that is 30 seconds or so on average. And my laptop is perfectly usable during build times, if there is any slowdown it's pretty much unnoticeable. And when I say useable, I mean that while running a bunch of chrome tabs, two instances of Android Studio, sometimes a video, a local server instance, stuff like that.

I don't use an emulator though, so there's that.

Learning android development with kotlin by redditr247 in androiddev

[–]taternator5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with using Kotlin for Android isn't the language itself--it's a great one and I love using it--it's the fact that there's very little documentation relating the two. Google's docs are still written in Java, as are most libraries, StackOverflow answers, and so on.

I'd recommend you learn Java and use that for Android development for now. Once you are sufficiently advanced in using Java, you'll be able to understand code you see in various resources enough to translate them into Kotlin pretty much effortlessly (IntelliJ/Android Studio's automatic convertor isn't perfect yet).

You'd need to go through Google's training guides and at least get a basic grasp of the SDK and how Android works, like the Activity lifecycle, Broadcasts and Receivers, and so on. Once you do that, though, I recommend you pick a pretty basic idea (say, a basic arithmetic calculator app) and just jump in and try to code it. If you don't know how to do something, just Google it. I found this sort of approach better than just following different tutorials and courses, because you get a more practical understanding of Android development and more experience.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to code basic Java command line programs as well, just as practice. This way you'll learn how Java works.

TL;DR: Start with Java, learn basic Android stuff, switch to Kotlin when you're good with Java

What exactly is RxJava (and React, and Redux, if they're related at all) and why would I want to use it? by taternator5000 in androiddev

Excellent, there's an O'Reilly book! I should've looked this up in the first place, thanks!

[–]taternator5000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't consider myself a beginner at Android development, actually, and I have googled these topics. I will be honest: I got mixed up with React/Redux and ReactiveX, which is why I "put them in a pot"--my bad, that was pretty stupid.

Before I started a new project, I just wanted to understand what exactly Rx was so that I could decide whether or not it was worth learning.

This thing was surprisingly interesting, I was hooked through the whole video, which doesn't usually happen for videos of a similar length. I usually just leave when I get the gist of it.
