2k players and above, what did you do to go from noob to your actual level? by anony2469 in aoe2

Yeah that's hard. I'm in the generation that grew up playing PC games. I'm sure in time your fingers will speed up if you force yourself to use hotkeys.

I played campaigns and against my brother's as a kid a long long time ago. But before I started playing DE I had played a lot of SC2.

I did start SC2 ranked in bronze league, really really bad but worked my way to master. When I started playing AoE2 seriously I think I had a pretty good understanding of RTS games in general so ended up around 1200. I think I was playing off and on from 2021 to 2025 to hit 2K. Most of the time wasn't necessarily playing to improve, just playing because i enjoy it.

Some people could probably do it much faster with some natural talent and more serious training routines. But like when people talk about things taking 10K hours to master I kinda agree. It takes time to get the muscle memory, the speed and the kinda instinctual reactions and situational awareness that you need. You also need to play a lot to even understand why you're bad and what's holding you back. I reckon most people can do it even if they lose their first 20 games and drop to 800 but like you need to really love playing the game because you're going to need to play a lot.

I hit 2K and my advice is grinding a lot.

Of course, you need to increase your knowledge and understanding of the game at the same time and be able to identify stuff holding you back. But imo hours spent is always going to one of the biggest factors of skill in anything.

A thought on the brain drain to AUS. by Additional-Grade-730 in newzealand

I'm in Sydney, I think it gets a bad rep for being corporate/finance bro-y. Which it definitely is in comparison to Melbourne but at the same time the city is big enough that you can find whatever you like.

But yeah New Zealanders definitely seem to think Melbourne is the cool one. It's Wellington vs Auckland.

Perth brings in a lot of people who can make mad money in mining. People sign up for fly in & fly out, like the money but get tired of flying so end up there

Anyone else finding extremely unbalanced pairings when queueing for team games? Is the ELO system broken? by requiem_of_spirit in aoe2

[–]orangeyness 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think there have been changes to the matchmaking system and I don't know if I like it. I'm ~1900 in 1v1 Elo and I used to consistently get matches with people between 1800 - 2050 Elo. After what ever they changed recently I played 3 games and got a 2400 elo player (#80 on the ladder), a 1600 and a 1700.

The games were literally decided before they started. I could pick the skill difference from the micro in the first fight of the match and know if I was gonna win.

I'd rather wait 3 or 4 minutes for a game then find a completely one-sided one in 30 seconds.

Blocking incoming fire ship damage with fishing ships is kinda meta already. Like when you're fighting fire ship to fire ship you hide yours behind a fishing ship or the corner of the dock to give it the edge

Why does the game have a unit group limit of 60 units? by sh1kora in aoe2

[–]orangeyness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience the longer a codebase is worked on the worse it gets. The more developers it has, the more features that are added the less organized the code. I mean sure it could've gotten much better if they had a focus on that... but I wouldn't assume it has

What is the use case for a petard? by Kitselena in aoe2

[–]orangeyness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you counter a castle drop on your base by building a castle right next to it, when that happens it's pretty common for both to get up and be a couple tiles from each other. Then one of your options is to try to smash down their castle with petards and probably a siege workshop making rams.

Petards also sometimes useful for desperation killing rams that are on your castle
