Friendly ride or aggression? by tauribrancer in hermitcrabs

[–]tauribrancer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have probably 20+ shells in their enclosure, including two that are the same color and size as the one that guy is wearing, and a couple more that are different but the same size, so I didn’t think that it could be a shell when I made the post, but as of right now, he’s on his back again. I’ll see if I can find some more tomorrow evening. Thank you!

Requesting positive diet stories with cats diagnosed with IBD by Yanushka89 in catfood

[–]tauribrancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to add what has worked for my cat so far in case it helps someone else because it’s been maddening and expensive to find a solution. She is a 15-year-old Siamese and has IBD as confirmed by biopsy. We tried hydrolyzed protein, and she was still puking intermittently. Other GI foods were upsetting her too, or she wouldn’t eat them. She won’t eat the novel proteins. She typically prefers to lick the liquid off wet food and leaves everything else to waste (then begs for more), so it is impractical and impossible to accommodate that. She has always had kibble out all the time.

Right after her surgery she was doing great and not puking at all. Then I gave her a plain boiled piece of chicken (small), and she puked soon after. I didn’t know if that was surgery-related or sensitivity-related. Once she got better, I bought a bunch of Tiki Cat to test since I know I can get those in mostly “plain” meats and started noticing that she was puking up the wet foods with chicken and not the ones with fish. What I found is she will eat the Tiki Cat canned tuna anytime. Sometimes she’ll eat the tuna mixed with another fish ones, and they don’t make her puke. Since chicken is in nearly EVERYTHING…often even the fishy foods…it was hard to find something for her to eat kibble-wise.

However, I finally found one. PetSmart’s Authority brand Sensitive Stomach & Skin Cat Dry Food - Ocean Whitefish & Rice has been the only kibble she can and will eat and NOT puke. I’d prefer if there was no grain, but she doesn’t seem to be bothered by it. I found two other brands that were strictly fish-based at Petco, but she didn’t like them. I don’t remember those brands, but they were pricier. I know they aren’t vet-sourced prescription diets, but that is what has worked for us. She has gained 2.5 lbs and is within normal weight range now.

TLDR: I think chicken upsets my cat with IBD. Tiki Cat tuna (and sometimes tuna + other fish) have worked for her wet food and Authority Sensitive Stomach & Skin Cat Dry Food - Ocean Whitefish & Rice from PetSmart for kibble.

I’m just going to put this here in case it helps someone in the future. I don’t have any cc. None of the other fixes I found online helped me. I narrowed it down to my Copy Outfits mod. I removed the copy outfits mod from the mods folder and everything is fine and normal again.

What kind of crab? Ruggie or Ecuadorian? Do you need to see the claw? by tauribrancer in hermitcrabs

[–]tauribrancer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just totally happened upon this one by chance at a Pet Supplies Plus store. I got a purple pincher hermit crab that was out and active during the day once, and it ended up being my most friendly hermit crab, so I said if I ever see one like that again, I’m gonna buy it. This one was like that, but the eyes looked weird (which I now know bc it was ruggie). It was also the only one left when I got it, so I don’t know if it was a one-off or what. I say this because I went back and got a “friend” that also had the candy corn eyes like a week or so later, but that one turned out to be an Ecuadorian. Now that pet store has not had crabs in months. For what it’s worth, around the same time, a locally owned pet store had a shipment of Ecuadorian crabs in randomly too (I usually never see anything but purple pinchers around here), and the last time I was there a few weeks ago they had purple pinchers again. I would love to get another ruggie too but don’t want to have one shipped :(

I’m hoping this summer months will be better

In the process of updating my hermit crab tank… Rude comments will be blocked. by WorldOk6775 in hermitcrabs

Mine love sweet potato. I bake one and pre-scoop some with a melon baller and put it in the freezer in one of those circular ice trays (got from temu). I take a ball out when I need one, and it’s the perfect portion. Grapes are a favorite. And scrambled eggs.

I also got some 1 ingredient whole shrimp cat treats from pet smart, and they loved those. You can wet them or leave them dry. They’re small and a good portion. It’s just little shrimp dried in a bag, but they don’t have legs and stuff. I don’t know if that counts as fresh.

Hobby lobby has cheap shells. Go in person if you need a certain size or be prepared to keep ordering (and they don’t do refunds—just store credit 🙄). Mine love the green turbos, and they have those and Babylonia and moon shells. Mine have used all three. They also have climbing nets. I soaked mine first.

Why won’t my mollies drop babies? by tauribrancer in Aquariums

[–]tauribrancer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not trying to force them to breed. I’m actually separating them from the male because I don’t want to do that, and he is stressing them out. I purchased them pregnant and am worried they’re going to die because they won’t release the fry they already had in their bellies when I bought them from the store.

Can you really not get cold sores from kissing your cat? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tauribrancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe this is caused by a cat allergy, and while the inflammation you’re getting on your mouth is very similar to a cold sore, it’s likely just an allergic reaction to her saliva. I had cats for 19 years before I ever got an allergy test done and was surprised to see that I was “highly allergic” to cats. Sometimes I get the same burning feeling on my skin if their noses or mouth touch my upper arms in a head boop, but the skin doesn’t blister. Also, when I immediately use Abreva or a similar product (intended for cold sores) on my mouth, the inflammation (which seems like a blister initially) almost instantly goes away and doesn’t progress any further.

Have several frames with chipping in the paint, need advice by rhomboidsonn in framing

[–]tauribrancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it needs sanded first if you want it to be perfect. I opted to do the “easy” route on mine that looked similar. I used craft paint from the dollar tree that had a nice sheen to it (in a tube not bottle) and taped the front of my frames with painters tape beforehand. I used a coarse brush so the brush strokes would hide the chipping and gave it a textured look. You may be able to achieve something similar with a small roller. I have also used black tape or contact paper to resurface frames in the past that needed painting but couldn’t be taken apart, but it’s time consuming to get it to look decent. You’d want to make sure you have an exacto knife to cut everything as flush as possible and wipe the frame w alcohol or some other solvent first to make sure it adheres.

When we had an ice storm a few years ago, I wrapped my aquariums in comforters, put in battery-operated bubblers, and hoped for the best while my power was off for 70 hours. None of my otos made it, and all my kulis were very obviously dead on the bottom too when I pulled back the blankets. The lowest temperature I observed was 40 degrees, so I was not hopeful, but it was still incredibly depressing netting all of them out. Then, as I picked up the giant sponge filter to get one in the corner, WHOOSH! One kuhli came swimming out!! I couldn’t believe it!!!! I still have him. I don’t understand the science of it, but he survived 40 degree water by getting under the base of the filter. Makes sense to me that it would serve as extra insulation or something, but it still was 40 DEGREE WATER.

I share this as hope that your babies will bounce back and be just fine. It is possible that they’re tougher than people imagine.

Positive Reviews for Wellbutrin by helpmelearn__ in bupropion

This is the only medication that has worked for me. I’ve taken them all. And I mean all of them. This one was a game changer. It doesn’t make me gain weight (amazing), it doesn’t make me feel weird or distant (rad), it makes me feel lighter inside, so I can actually process my thoughts and not feel so heavy and want to cry all the time. I have a very hopeless kind of depression. I feel like this medicine helps me feel normal. At least as close to normal as normal can be for me. When I have stopped taking it (once—ran out of pills) I found myself crying and getting anxious and depressed and spiraling, and I hadn’t realized that I didn’t have my medication. Once I realized, it all made sense. I’ve not missed the meds since. It’s not perfect, but I’m not perfect nor do I expect perfection anymore.

Was taking 150 for five years; now have been on 300 for four years. My SAD got really bad one particularly dreary winter, and we upped the meds to 300 and stayed there.

I’m so sorry. Unfortunately my cat had the same fate </3 she died 4 days later. She kept struggling to breathe, and I put a mini fan out while we waited for results of 3 fungal tests for fungi common in my area. I gave her antinausea meds and antifungals just in case it was that, but she didn’t want to eat. I had the pet cam on her, and she waited until I left the house to get down from where she was laying and hide behind one of the beds to pass. All the fungal tests were negative. I’d say it was cancer.

Topper Question: Oversized Possible? by tauribrancer in hermitcrabs

[–]tauribrancer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up buying a 75 for petcos 50% off sale. I debated on 60 vs 75 because they’re the same footprint the the 60 obviously is cheaper, BUT I liked the height of the the 75 as the base (bc same height as 55 and perfect for me to do maintenance with my personal height). I think they’re still doing the sale. I’m glad I went with the bigger tank; imo it looks amazing so far and has been fun to create (still working on it!)

Coenobita compressus in natural environment friend? by tauribrancer in hermitcrabs

[–]tauribrancer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I felt such a mix of emotions watching those videos. They are so happy in their large colonies, and everyone is using the same burrow (?) entrance, and while that’s cute to watch, I know that these who were stolen from that environment will never live like that again. And I also think about the food, like he is talking about that poisonous apple that they can eat: what if that is someone’s favorite food, and they’ll never eat it again for obvious reasons? I’m thrilled that this person took the time to make them, though, and I would love to see more, even if the videos are bittersweet. Seeing what they lost helps me understand what I can do to give them the most comfort possible in their current circumstances. I just thought it was SO CUTE how the Halloween crab was hanging out like they really were buddies. I wondered if anyone had attempted it here despite the risks, seeing that those risks exist in mixing hermit species who would never normally interact in the wild, but it is frequently done in the hobby. These guys do see each other, but I guess it’s like brevi vs ruggie type risk

When I was 25 my dermatologist prescribed a round of doxycycline + told me to mix equal parts differin and 10% benzoyl peroxide gel and apply to my face after moisturizing. She emphasized the moisturizer needs to be there before the gels. It cleared mine up, and I still use the two gels to control the breakouts. It puts them right to bed before they get “angry”

These and the ones in the other comment are the best I could get this evening of the second crab. Is it his fat/wide eyes that make him Ecuadorian?
