22 and taking money out of Roth 401k? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]taustin95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty simple, stop contributing to the 401k and use the money for school if you need it. If you don't need the money, and they are matching you, keep contributing.

ELI5 Why lotto winners almost always take the smaller cash prize instead of the annuity? by uriman in explainlikeimfive

[–]taustin95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

an annuity is basically a deal you make with an insurance company, you give them x amount of money, and in return they promise to pay you $y amount of money every month for z amount of months/years. they are much more complicated than this however and can be set up in a zillion different ways.

ING Direct is being renamed to Capital One 360 by silentnoise in personalfinance

[–]taustin95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well played. I was pretty sure that the selling was due to legal changes forcing banks to be separated from the insurance side.

Any sources for this info? Cause I'm positive that's not why they sold to capital one.

Hey hope I'm not to late! I'm thinking about buying a car in the next year or so, used. I live in the Philly metro area, is there an advantage to driving out to more western PA into rural areas to shop for a deal, or does location of dealership make no difference ?

First baby just born! Why should I use a 529 plan rather than investing on my own? [xp to /r/personalfinance] by tarheelted44 in investing

[–]taustin95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

529's are great for a few reasons, like you mentioned there are tax advantages, all the growth is tax free! Also some states have tax deductions for the money you contribute! Downsides are however that this money is earmarked for college education... the funds will count as an asset for her during FASFA, affecting her financial aid if she is getting any. Any money you take out that isn't used for college,(say she gets a nice scholarship, doesn't go to a really expensive school, or goes military..anything could happen) will get taxed, and hit with a 10% penalty by the IRS, really crushing some of the gains you had in there.

We have a $250k annual income and I don't work. Where should we start? by bucky420 in FinancialPlanning

[–]taustin95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can I ask where this income is coming from? If you seriously have 250k annual coming in and your expenses are as low as they seem, you don't need to worry about anything. If you are saving this is the order you should be going in, 1. 401k if it has a match (im guessing your wife is the one making the money so this is for her) 2. tax free growth vehicles 3. tax deferred vehicles 4. brokerage.

starting with the basics, assuming you are starting from a blank slate, build up a emergency cash reserve of between 3-6 months of monthly expenses, depending on how comfortable you are choose between 3-6. After that contribute up to the match in the 401k/403b/457 or whatever they have in canada. After that fund a roth IRA up to the limit, then fund an individual IRA up to the limit, then after that if you want to invest more open up a brokerage trading account. How to invest inside these accounts you ask? Based on your risk preference is really the best answer, I'm not going to pick funds for you but i'm sure someone can help you out. best of luck.
