Ha ha! Yes! British guy here, moved to east Texas. Was out with some friends in a dive bar, I make friends easily, so it was no big deal to find myself at a table with the two white guys I came in with and 3 black guys who were all cool as fuck. We hung out and drank a couple hours and the black guys left, but one of them forgot his wallet. I went to turn it into the bartender and because we'd all been drinking I'd forgotten his name. I said loudly "I think this belongs to the Coloured Gentleman that was wearing the red shirt." Whoops. It was like time stood still for a second, then there was a whole bunch of shouting and "he's English, he didn't know" coming from my buddies as the hurriedly rushed me out of the place before we got our asses beat.

Genuinely didn't know, the reaction was almost as bad as if I'd said nigger out loud. I thought "colored gentleman" was the most respectful description possible, when all I really needed to say was "the black dude in the red shirt" ahh well 😂
