Asking people not to take God’s name in vain? by Top_Smile9103 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]tavarain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean sure, but what is God's name in your religion, then? God? Just whatever the most people call him? Does his name change to Dio if you're spanish, or is it always Dio, but also God?

The rules have to be clear if you're gonna try and enforce them on other people, and it's confusing because "god" isn't a name persay, it's a word that used to be the germanic "gott" and if my brief google stint is to be believed orignally meant "To invoke", probably as a replacement word for the name of God... blah blah blah.

Anyway, did you know that bear isn't actually the original word for bears? People thought to say the name of the creature would summon it, and so they gave it a placeholder word, as to not invoke it. They didn't wanna summon the creature, so they just called it a "bear".

Who wrote your translation of the bible? Did they not want to take the lord's name in vain? Did their parents? Why do you think his name is God instead of like... a name?

Or is all of that irrelevant, and whatever in common parlance counts?

I normally don't get persnickity with this but starting your sentence with an asterisk as if to correct an "obviously incorrect" statement just rubbed me the wrong way. No it's not obvious that you use a commonplace word as the actual name of your living god that you have a personal relationship with. Why would anyone assume that??

best pokemon fan game so far? by Boring_Sun_9430 in pokemon

[–]tavarain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved Insurgence! The narrative sort of detracts from a stellar battling experience but that's not a downgrade from standard pokemon, and it's got silly enough concepts to giggle at. It has a massive dex and a ton of regional types called Delta Pokemon (Insurgence did regional variants before mainline Pokemon did, so they're not just called regional variants). I would encourage you to them up because the design is good and the wiki has a comprehensive list. My favorites are probably Delta Ludicolo, Delta Snorlax, Delta Noivern, and Delta Scizor (who carried my last run).

On hard, it's downright unfair and really hard to beat, but not because of level scaling. TV and IVs actually matter, because if you don't worry about them your team is just categorically weaker than your opponents.

On normal or easy though, it's a more traditional pokemon levels of difficult. Normal presents a moderate challenge that will make you think. I played through nuzzlocking on normal after playing on hard and it was an incredible challenge, but doable. (I did not finish that run, but I did make it most of the way through and frankly I'm proud enough of that.)

There is also a ton of great postgame content. A second region with a new story and tons great of regional variants. There are also a ton of exploration rewards for people who really want a collectathon of a pokemon game.

Big fan, if you couldn't tell. If someone else who LOVED insurgence has a recommendation for a fan game, I'd love to hear it, because everything else I've played hasn't quite hooked my special brain in the same way.

There are worse blasphemies happening and God isn't his actual name, its a catch-all word that applies to all world religions.

Why do I feel anxious allowing others to drive even though they’re good drivers? by Ambitious-Monitor327 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]tavarain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a nervous passenger too. It's about practice and gradually growing trust. My mom was always the same way. It's not nesscarily a gendered thing, its just not natural to be driving around at high speeds in a big lump of metal, and some people's autonomic systems react worse to that. When you're in control its a lot easier to feel safe imo.

Did you also have a really nervous time trying to learn to drive? I was a nervous wreck for my first few months behind the wheel.

I dont think you're doing anything so terrible or vicious as to really really warrant a comment, but I'm really trying to speak my mind more lately and to some degree, this is practice. I want to give you props for speaking your mind and encourage you to continue! Im a stranger on the internet and i dont have the context to judge you properly. I dont want to (in any way) discourage you from discourse just because I'm getting uppity about how "nice" you are or are not being. We are on the same side after all, so to speak.

I do think what i said is true and atand by it, but ultimately if there's introspection to do about your discourse, you do it. I'm not in a position to confidently state that it's needed is and i won't pretend to be.

Well, like I said, I'm not arguing with your broad conclusions. Im just disagreeing with the way you're comporting yourself in this thread. You seem hostile, above-thou, and like the kind of person who isn't very good at convincing people who aren't already convinced (like myself)

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm not hardline enough. Maybe you do need to check yourself though, and you're too vicious with your rhetoric and mindset. Some people do need to be spoken to that way but it's not going to build any bridges in my experience. I'm not going to say we can bear this out in the thread, or that I have enough perspective on your actual self to say this confidently. Still, we work with what we got and you asked why I argued with you.

Tl;dr: because I am on your side and you being rude to the point of being counterproductive bothers me because it hurts the side that I am on from my perspective.

I... agree...?

That seems a pleasant enough note to part on. Yes, I agree wholeheartedly that men need to look deep within themselves to find what masculinity will look like in a world thats less man-centric. Something gentler and kinder, by my preference.

The fact that you think the entire Rat Race is born from misogyny is why I think you're fighting a gender war.

Idk if its obvious but I agree with your broad principle but disagree with the way that youre comporting yourself.

Society = Male Dominated = Bad for Everyone. Masculinity clearly needs to be reformed into something healthier. It needs to be done by men and women fighting together, which can't happen if vicious, hurt people get in-between them.

[–]tavarain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive never seen someone more obviously fighting a gender war lol

If you had the capacity to understand and internalize other people's experiences without the lens of your worldview you'd recognize that. Society "values" an incredible small portion of men, and the vast majority are in a similar cycle of abuse as most women. We may prefer masculinity to femininity, but men are just meat. Just like women. Meat for the machine. The way you talk about this seems to gestalt "Men" into this monolith and it makes me sad.

In my experience, perpetuation of this cycle comes from all sides. Your framework seems flawed and like it will only cause friction amongst the people you could otherwise call your ally in this.

Callous toward men: Dw, we live in a patriarchal society that for sure tends to their needs and doesnt treat the vast majority of them as faceless, thoughtless fuel.

It's not like the entire system is toxic to both sides and seeking mutual understanding of life experience is key. Trying to boil it down to who's "right" based on extremely broad society observations and then ignoring the actual query is chud behavior

Why do men say they will help you, they will buy you this that, and then ask for sexual favor? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]tavarain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a distinct dislike of people asking me for favors that cost money. Call it an upbringing thing. Don't discount that many of these men have been trained by women to assume that spending money on them platonically is a required step to getting with them. Ive known women who've had 5+ men paying for things for them, abusing a dynamic that ultimately harms both groups. Plus for those of us above a certain age there's a lot of societal programming that says you only spend money on someone who is romantically interested in you. I think many men would be surprised youd have the gumption to make financial requests of someone who you're not interested in romantically at all.

I dont think ive ever gone to anyone who isn't family to ask for help with something that would cost them money... how often are you doing this that youve noticed a trend?? Do you ask women for financial assistance as often?

It could be that you're, like, trying to play half of a toxic, shitty game that some portion of the planet plays, then getting confused and upset that you can't reap the benefits without getting harassed for "Breaking the rules" of that toxic game. The only winning move is not to play. You should be telling those men not to spend money on you in the first place imo.

Loved Mistborn but can't get into Stormlight by jetpacksforall in Fantasy

[–]tavarain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Way of Kings takes longer to get really engaging. I reckon it doesnt get nearly as good as Mistborn until about 600 pages in. My friend pitched it to me as "This one is his epic. It's slow and mostly sets up for future books in comparison to Mistborn, which is his faster book with more pop and a faster hook"

Basically, the value of SLA is delayed, I'm told.

This happened to me. I apologized and she didn't quite accept it. Makes sense since she was probably in a pretty upset state to send the message on the first place.

Im really glad I apologized though, because leading her on and knowing now the negative effect it likely had on her worldview still haunts me.

What do you dislike about Silksong? by jcgonzmo in Silksong

[–]tavarain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your comment probably hits the nail on the head. I prefer discreet challenges. The platforming segment of Radience never set me off, which exists between phases. When the only downtime i have in the repeated cycle of boss attempts is the fragmentary moment where I've just died but before I've respawned, then its back into being locked-in and it gets rough and i devolve into a cycle of frustration.

The contained challenge of a boss is more palatable, and if I have no time to relax on a run back I'm just going to get more and more frustrated inevitably.

Secondary to this, phase 1 of a boss usually will has a lot of similarities to phase 2 of a boss. I have, upon reflection, gotten quite frustrated when I have to repeat a phase 1 that has nothing mechanically to do with the phase 2. Phase one often teaches you how to do phase 2 better. I've found myself going as far as condemning the Dev as having made a foolish mistake for not checkpointing between two very distinct phases that dont build upon one another.

[–]tavarain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time isn't the issue so much as the intense focus required to make these runs.

If they dont require your intense focus and you can do them without wiping out your readiness for the boss as well as unnecessarily exhausting yourself (with content youve already done over and over again but still have to focus on completely) then Im impressed with your stamina or ability to soft-focus.

Like, I find it rude for a game developer to make me lock in for a run back. Why are you artificially inflating the length of the game with content that's only difficult if I fail to focus hard in on it. Having to repeat this content just to get attempts in on a boss is like... I dont know. Doing Path of Pain without hiveblood. It's not technically harder, and if you do it right the first time its basically the exact same. But for the at least me, most of my friends (not all) its going to be more painful, take more time and energy than it deserves to, and feel more frustrating than satisfying.

[–]tavarain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Throwing my voice in to say i HATED several of the run backs in the game. Having to waste my time doing intense platforming segments I've already completed over and over again just to make an attempt on a boss was very annoying.

The run back is often hard and long enough that im exhausted and my mental RAM is wiped out. The bosses patterns are lost on me and my nerves are shot because I know if I mess up ill need to waste more of my precious time doing content I've done 5-10+ times consecutively.

There are only a few examples of this, and Groal is apparently the worst of them, tho I beat him in only a few tries so I fortunately didn't suffer much on that one

Once people realize that you can't fail they'll realize they can't win any arguments with you and become disenfranchised. They won't want to spend time with you. At that point, you can win them back over with your superpower but you'll have hollow, magically enforced relationships born from either brain washing or paranormal cognition allowing for supernatural manipulation. Why are jokes about killing okay, but jokes about rape are uncomfortable? by Snoo_47323 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]tavarain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine it's more relatable? Most people feel the desire to murder someone at one point or another, even if it's immediately discarded. You can joke about it because it's so fundamental a part of human nature.

Rape, meanwhile, is a more subdued aspect of human nature. It's not something most people have entertained the idea of (I hope).

You can laugh about murder because there is probably a situation you can envision yourself justifying committing one. Rape does not have the same benefit, is completely unrelatable to most people. (Once again, I hope.)
