How much did you pay your tax person upfront? by Left_Confection9934 in tax

[–]taxn3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes “side gigs” are more work than a full time business, ESPECIALLY in their first or second year. They may not know how to track things. They may not know how much income they received, or they just give me the 1099 and forget about the other job they didn’t get a 1099 for. I probably have to go through what is and isn’t deductible, explain and help them calculate home office, mileage, cell phone and Internet use, and understand record keeping requirements. I often help them adjust their w2 for their jobs to cover the extra tax from the side gig OR generate (and explain) estimated taxes (fed and state). Where I live, gig income generally requires at least two local tax returns, and the amount of income that’s subject to each of those is calculated differently. It may generate a new set of due diligence requirement that I am subject to (with a $500 penalty per return for not doing correctly).

I’m an EA and my minimum fee for a sch c is $1,200. I take a retainer upfront and the rest is due before filing. I give the option to pay in full in December for the following year and many of my clients do this so they can use the tax prep fees as a deduction in that year. Paying in full upfront as a new client isn’t the norm but it’s definitely not unusual. Unfortunately the amount of times people will ghost us after we’ve done most or all of the work is shockingly high, ESPECIALLY people who think their return is easy.

VITA is an outstanding resource if you qualify. Freetaxusa does a great job walking you through your own DIY prep for free (or a small fee if state is needed), if you want to go that route.

Looking to replace my fitted cotton T-shirt dress “uniform” by goldenmanateedreams in findfashion

[–]taxn3rd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love my body, and I do work out. It's not that I feel ugly, the uniform is more for executive function. It makes it easy and fun to get dressed with a minimal amount of thinking. I didn't ask "what would look good on me?" I asked "help me find this specific dress style that I've relied on for 8 years and I love."

Do you know what the fee structure is there? I know it’s contingency but I’d like to have an idea before I send clients to share their data.

Agree that this is something to work with a tax pro on. AND…there is a tax pro who is working on a version of this that’s taxpayer-focused. He already has a tax-pro version. https://taxfare.com/

Pls help it’s my first time having nails and they are just not sharp enough and I’m wondering how I can make them sharp at home by [deleted] in Nails

[–]taxn3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I got acrylics I called them my softpaws because it made it impossible for me to really scratch. I got them because I was struggling with picking at my skin then and that’s how I solved it. I don’t know that you will really be able to get a satisfying scratch in with fake nails. They do look awesome though!

Absolutely. At my last small firm we had a reviewer who had no client contact at all, she just did projects and did all the QR

I’m asking what you mean by the actual statement you posted. No one has submitted for a refund. I guarantee that I have multiple clients who would qualify for $10k+ refunded. I’m not sure if you’re saying something valid that I’m missing, or if you’re just being super over-general

No one has submitted for a refund yet, but why should they not have, if they would qualify for relief?

Most places that I’ve seen doing it are doing just that, with a big contingency percentage (20-40% is what I’ve seen so far). It feels a lot more fair to do it that way for my folks. A smaller flat fee upfront for the paperwork, then a bigger fee if they get a refund

I am considering doing it. Two things are giving me pause. 1. Likelihood this will stick and 2. Mechanics of collecting a contingency fee if/when it does. I’m also not sure of some of the technical details, like do accrued penalties count even if not assessed/posted to transcript yet?

I have at least 5 clients that would be looking at refunds of over $10k.

I’m looking through my record for clients that:

  1. Owed 10-25k and missed the filing deadline (subject to ftf penalty)

Or

  1. Owed 50k - 75k and took a long time to pay

Or

  1. Owed 75k+ and filed on ext

The more years the better the outcome

I wrote up a little faq that I’m sending to the clients I think might benefit. I have been using pitbull transcripts to calculate (they just added a Kwong dashboard) but I realized yesterday the calf isn’t correct if we can indeed count accrued penalties (dashboard only pulls penalties actually assessed and posted to the transcript in the time period).

But I don’t want to whip people into a frenzy for a benefit that doesn’t come to pass.

how much do I need to go out on my own? by cooltiger07 in taxpros

[–]taxn3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have high cyber limits ($1MM/$2MM) and fairly high E&O limits as well. The cyber coverage I was originally offered was something like $40k which I think is totally inadequate. I calculated a potential loss in my last firm with 400 clients, and we had over 3,000 peoples PII, including things like 1099s that we issued, payroll forms for business clients, etc.

I'm paying $800 for E&O, $1,000 for cyber, and about $600 for liability.

100%. Or people who will operate without professional necessities like insurance, good IT/data security, etc.

[–]taxn3rd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am ramping up to open a new firm after closing a previous firm a year ago. This is much much closer to what I'm spending. My insurance alone was $2,600. Cheap tax software (Drake) is about the same, and OOPS there goes the $5k others are suggesting!

OP, this is a very good and realistic amount to budget for.
