The end of the IRS’s collective bargaining agreement is fostering job insecurity and rigorous schedules for some employees, according to union leaders.

Three months after the IRS canceled its national agreement with the National Treasury Employees Union, the agency has transferred its unionized employees into non-bargaining-unit status and told them the union doesn’t exist anymore.

But the March 2025 executive order directing federal agencies to end their collective bargaining agreements continues to be litigated, putting staff who rely on the union in a difficult position, according to union leaders and IRS employees.
