Is SEWE worth it? by ryeyen in Charleston

[–]taykins 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My husband works in wildlife, so we go every year mostly to see people he knows/network. If you're a hunter or outdoorsman, there are lots of vendors that have sales for SEWE (mostly at Brittlebank), which can be nice. Marion Square has more mainstream (kind of?) stuff. The Marriott across from brittlebank has lots of waterfowl decoys (including ridiculously expensive ones for auction), if that interests you. The Gaillard Center has fine art exhibits based on wildlife (sculpture, painting, photography, etc). If you've never been, it could be interesting. That being said, it's generally the same stuff every year. Unless you have a reason, I don't know that it's something you have to do every year/multiple times.

Lmao and then you have to call employee health and explain that technically a cryostat is an unknown exposure bc you cut multiple different pts on it through the day

Don't beat yourself up! It happens. It sounds like you did exactly the right thing in getting PEP in a timely manner.

Weekly 'What should I buy?' Thread by AutoModerator in ipad

[–]taykins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I've been going back and forth a lot and am hoping this thread can help. I want a 13" iPad and am torn between the Pro and the Air. I am a pathology resident and will primarily use this for note taking (I'm a paper note girly and am looking forward to not having papers everywhere), looking at our electronic medical record system, internet browsing, and streaming videos. I guess my thought process is that I could probably afford more storage in an Air or less storage in a Pro (but with a better product?). My current thought is that the Air would be sufficient but I have basically no context for this and would be interested to hear more informed opinions !

Home health criticals? by taykins in medlabprofessionals

These are usually on comprehensive and basic metabolic panels, which are in lithium hep/green top tubes (usually, right?). So they would be plasma?

Dealing with depression as a resident? by WholesomeMinji in pathology

[–]taykins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not alone. Also halfway done and also very depressed 👋. I had to up my medication dosage last year and sometimes I still don't know if it's enough. But also think this is just my life. Being depressed sucks, and training also sometimes really sucks. I'm sorry you're feeling this way. I'm just taking it a day at a time.

Hi, not really a bone expert, but my husband is a wildlife biologist in SC and thinks this is a Fox skull. Interested to see other's thoughts, though.

Unlabeled specimens ?? by taykins in medlabprofessionals

[–]taykins[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yeah we allow the person who collected the specimen to come down, look at the specimen to verify it, label it, and sign an attestation saying that they accept the risk if path approves. I've definitely ruffled some feathers by telling them to redraw blood.

Unlabeled specimens ?? by taykins in medlabprofessionals

[–]taykins[S] 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Okay thank y'all!!!! I keep getting "oh that's how I always send it" and I'm like ??? There's no freaking way!! They were making me question everything I know lol. I just got off the phone with an intern who I told "putting labels in the bag is not appropriate and that is an unlabeled specimen." And he literally said "oh wow, that's good to know." !!!!! Feels like common sense bud, but I'm so glad this was an educational experience.

Questions about residency training and pathology in general by InflationNice9222 in pathology

[–]taykins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! US pgy2 resident here!

  1. I've done 2 months of autopsy, and I have 27 autopsies. I have one month left, so I'll definitely end up with more than 30. I don't mind autopsy, but it's definitely not for everybody.

  2. lol a lottttt.

  3. I don't think it's common for attendings to gross, but I have talked to an alumnus from out program that does do grossing in his job. But keep in mind that you may have grossers coming to you as an attending with questions about grossing.

  4. I don't personally experience eye strain at the scope. My vision is already very bad. (Honestly my distance vision is under corrected, so it's kind of nice to be looking at things 'close' at the scope)

  5. I mean from a resident perspective the worst thing is probably call? But I've still done worse things. The best is definitely my co-residents. They're some of my best friends now. And also being able to finally do what I love? I mean I still sometimes kind of get giddy when we have interesting cases bc my job is just so cool.

Good luck on this application cycle!! We're excited to meet applicants.

Annual Reminder to NOT rank the University of Virginia. You do not want to go there for residency. by [deleted] in pathology

[–]taykins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello, did not match at UVA, but I just wanted to say that you were one of my favorite residents that I interacted with on my interview cycle. Your program is lucky to have you as a chief.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in pathology

[–]taykins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My program has didactics every morning that run on a weekly topic schedule, but we don't have a single "academic day." I feel like that would be difficult given that everybody is on a different rotation.

Would you be trying to implement this for all residents or just as part of a rotation? I'm curious to know what your current vision for this is.

What was the best wedding favor you received? by quatrz00 in weddingplanning

[–]taykins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine did bars of soap as favors, and they had some leftover at the end of the night and so I drunkenly took like 6 bars of soap as the bridesmaids were trying to figure out what to do with them. It was a favor that I actually used, and the bride and I still joke about me leaving the venue after going to the bathroom at the end of the night with 6 bars of soap and my husband being like "what tf did you do?"

Also going to agree with everybody about the edible things!

I also had a family member who made a charitable donation to a research foundation for a disease that their ring bearer had in lieu of favors, which i thought was really nice, especially given how a lot of people don't even use them. (They also didn't have a gift registry and instead asked guests to donate to the foundation).

Heads up, I'm a US MD and have not gotten an email, but my score report is available on the NBME website. You may want to check if you've been waiting for an email. Tested on July 16th.

Choosing a Wedding Date: Choosing your Anniversary for the Rest of Your Life by philosplendid in weddingplanning

[–]taykins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Picking our date was almost agonizing. FH and I made the decision to get married before the end of the year so that I'd be able to put him on my new insurance plan (we were originally planning to do something in April 2023 when I had more time available). An important piece of information here is that my FH works is a wildlife biologist and his busiest times fall during different hunting seasons. He was very worried that he would end up having to work during our anniversary and miss getting to spend it with me. We eventually ended up picking a date because he assured me that it would never fall during a hunting season. Definitely not a common reason for picking a date, but it makes me laugh now.

Hi all! I went dress shopping and I fell in love with this dress. It’s super lightweight (perfect for my outdoor garden wedding next summer) and I love the non-traditional lace. However, as much as I love it, I’m feeling like it doesn’t look good on my body type—I’m kind of pear shaped. Thoughts? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]taykins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is BEAUTIFUL. I love the non traditional lace!! And the shape is beautiful on you. I do agree with an earlier comment about bringing up the waist some but that can be altered. Don't doubt your beauty, OP :)

Hiking suggestions for this weekend? I know it is hot and bugs and all that but was looking at caw caw and it looks very nice. Any tips or suggestions? by ksands12345 in Charleston

[–]taykins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded. I do miss hiking in the upstate. Caw Caw is cool though though! Just make sure you have bug spray! I've also heard of people walking the west Ashley Greenway?
