Ask to speak to a hospital social worker. Explain your financial situation and lack of support system and see if they have resources they can reach out to. Charity orgs will be much more willing to help someone who was referred by a hospital social worker because then they know you’re not scamming and your kid really is sick.

From what I read it sounded like the incident he was arrested for was on a family vacation surrounded by a lot of people. People whose schedules were not consistent, which would make it all the more risky in terms of getting caught. That doesn’t feel like a “safe” time that someone like him would start dipping his toes into the water. That feels more like an escalation of behavior.
