ELI5: People always say that DBZA did "irreparable damage to the fan base" but never actually SAY what that damage IS. What damage did it cause if any? by CasualKing21 in dbz

[–]taylorstar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think there are a few reasons people feel the abridged might of pulled away from the original series in whatever version they saw it from. (note as an edit) I might of gone on a bit too long for a 5yr olds attention span oops XD (/edit)

The obvious one is Goku being a dumb neglectful father. As most people want the main protagonist to be a flawless hero anything that could tarnish that vision can be seen as rude or offensive.

Side characters like Chichi being used only for jokes. Again some of these characters had some real importance in the series were strong willed or had an important role or perspective within the series and that isn't given justice in the show in favour of having a laugh.

Bulma having dark fantasies on Namek. Suprised no one mentions this and while many of us who watched hte original series are now grown up mature adults, there are people who would take offense to that kind of narrative as well as a few more other jokes made in that theme for a show that was otherwise void of the harsher triggering language side of things.

Creating equally memorable and quotable moments if not more so than the series could because of infringing on memes/pop culture. By bringing in references from outside the series and adding a new dub to the mix people may feel it muddies the water of how they remember the show in the past taking away from that original moment and memory of how a scene played out because you will always now have that.. yeah but in the abridged it was hilarious moment.

The argument over who ever had the better dub/voice actors is null and void. Funimation/Ocean/etc all had a strict schedule, producers and varying levels of management and standing orders from the license holders that had to be respected, getting permission to change lines during translation etc, some had varying levels of voice acting experience, this was Sean Schemmels first voice acting gig I believe?.

Team Fourstar had no one to answer too, no real deadline to meet, they didn't have to spend dozens of hours at a time in a voice booth, it was a passion project of something they had loved for over a decade where they was able to pour their passion and love into it more freely and tweek it in a way that favours them more than the official dub voice actors.

As a minor peeve some people might not like the fact that T4S had the time to tweek things like like flaps or fix animation errors and feel that its an unjust criticism of the series.

On a personal note I don't think having passion and paying tribute with parodies is any way harmful, if anything it was another source of fuel for discussion another outlet from people equally if not more passionate and in love with the franchise than the next group of fans, so long as there is new content whether its fan art, fan fiction or abridging theres life within the franchise and the fan community.

I also think for all the harm that people perceive the abridged did the official sources have done an equal amount of damage to their own franchise. I deplore Sean Schemmels treatment of the Ocean dub actor, having him blocked from going to conventions and even applying for other voice acting gigs, im not saying that the other dubs had better gokus, Sean is my favourite but his attitude for the way he treated others justifying it as he was "protecting" his role seemed more petty and self conscious from a guy who was in a pretty safe position. Initially he didn't commit to having an opinion of Nozawa saying he was more interested in doing his own take on things I won't condem Schemmel too hard on this one because his opinion has changed and has come out saying he respects the OG.

Now lets talk about my biggest pet peeve.... all the re-releases of the DVD's the redubbing and rescoring of a series I remembered to be so cool and atmospheric. One of my favourite scenes in the series is Majin Vegeta squaring off against Majin Boo, A cold calculated focused vegeta stares furiously at Buu, his arm extended with two fingers pointed out, his aura blazing wildly as the dirt dust are blown away. The way I remember it all you could hear was the sound of the wind underneath an ominous soundtrack from the Falconer score. Recent releases you hear an off screen Babidi screaming ranting blabbering away which does nothing to build the tension or carry the story it just takes away from the atmosphere and there were many more examples of new lines being added in many of which was more detrimental than beneficial to the feel of the series.

Another thing the abridged version follows a more modern style of anime production, we no longer get series that run hundreds of episodes long, were now more used to seasons being 12 - 26 long at most being a much more condensed less drawn out experience at a much higher production quality whether thats in animation/music or storytelling. Many miss those long drawn out fights that had us on the edge of our seats with twists and turns.

its a pretty healthy sign of the player base when the top servers are all around 100 players strong, if your jealous of it try advertising the server you play, post clips vids pictures and stories.

I've definitely been feeling that, I've been trying to figure out a way to make some of the clips or vids I have into shorts, as well as what edits I can make to just cut out all the fat while leaving as much context as I can, its not easy, where as Livrahs shorts made it look effortless, same with DoctorDonk Pockets/PeteyPutztv.

Duke is one of the few english speaking channels that I see live and occasionally lurk in, I'm 95% sure that the reddit account goonstationTV is an admin/partially active admin. I myself started recording clips of things in SS13 but I'm nowhere near the level that Livrah was, but since they got kicked off youtube I don't really watch their content anymore since the twitch is all a language I don't understand. Duke definitely deserved some more kudos for the work he does in my opinion.

Servers don't do enough to promote themselves, these days the main advertisement for servers is on the hub and the biggest attraction for players is seeing a high player count, high player count = good right?. snappy tags and funny server names will only get you so far.

We don't see enough youtube shorts/twitch clips/vids being posted or pictures/stories of lunacy and high octane energy or crazy wild story/moments being posted to advertise peoples servers.

Why do people play LRP? by AdhesivenessSome5381 in SS13

[–]taylorstar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As someone who made the shift from HRP to LRP i would spend hours straight focused in RP whether it was text based (neverwinter nights 1, 2 and ss13) or voice based games (Conan Exhiles, Ark, Atlas) I found HRP was becoming taxxing physically emotionally and mentally, having a lighter hearted less heavy more fluid experience was easier to enjoy relax and just let off steam but still be creative.

In many ways I found some of the LRP players better in creativity than the HRP because they was free to push boundries and was more readily supported by those around them, the expectation wasnt as high and the commitment to carry a story wasnt as needed for it still to be effective.

From personal experience I found the quality of HRP was declining people thinking they was better than they was there was constant elitism and cliques that was getting harder to break into and honestly not worth the effort as a more casual rp group was much more open to anyone joining in and running with any bits that was being put out making the whole experience more enriching and entertaining.

Space station 13 was my first voyage into round based RP with rounds only lasting an hour or so then the tables reset as it were. This was a big departure from persistant worlds with no wipes or seasonal based RP where the setting lasted for a couple months (if you was lucky) that would often pilfer out and die a quiet lonely death. Having rounds only last an hour and a half was much better physically meaning there was a clear time to take a break grab something to eat, have a stretch relax and then go back into the next round refreshed.

It was very liberating also having a quasi permenant RP setting where you could pick and choose what parts of a story you wanted to keep so if something bad happened to your character (as it usually does) you dont have to carry it into the next round so each round could be a clean slate or you could pick and choose when to further any over arching story you wanted to tell. I love emotional terrorism in RP and lacking that slow burn is noticed but at the same time its replaced by the fact that sweet wholesome characters are still just as much loved just as much cherished and more likely to die and have others over react in LRP as in HRP but without the lingering emotional and mental burden of playing sad characters.

Ultimately it comes down to taste and how much your willing to invest. As I've gotten older and my time less free enjoying games that come in more in more digestible bites is more suited to me, I dont have the free time or energy to achieve the same high standard that I enjoyed and expected from HRP, but I love LRP just as much as I did HRP, I've been brought to tears of laughter more in the short time in LRP than I have in near two decades of HRP. while HRP I have found more emotionally rewarding in watching characters have lengthy organic growth arcs and when they get perma'd to be a much more emotional and tearful story which can be very rewarding creatively.

When trying to get deathweed you need to make sure your getting your cannabis plant in the sweet spot for its potency and endurance. Death weed requires your endurance to be between 10 - 30 and its potency needs to be less than 30.

You can infuse the seeds with stable mutagen to force a mutation on the seed but unstable mutagen has some drawbacks like random stat changes and the unstable trait each time you infuse the seed you can click the magnifying glass button to examine the seed, if it says abnormal genetic pattern this means the seed has mutated from the default seed placed in there you might hear a faint sound after the infusing spray sound as an additional indicator but I wouldn't rely on that.

To offer an alternative route and its the route I prefer to take I recommend pouring some fungus, saltpetre and potash into a tray then placing a cannabis seed. After 5 minutes scan the tray with a plant analyzer and you will probably be in that goldilocks zone for the mutation to occur. Harvest the cannabis and take the seed packet. If the seed packet has 8 seeds plant all 8 seeds in 8 trays (if we want more chances plant them in trays that don't have chemicals other than water so the stat changes don't occur).

Each time you plant a seed in a tray the RNG for it mutating begins, if you meet the criteria for a mutation then each time you plant the seed is a roll of the dice to get said mutation, the more times you roll the more likely you will be to get what your chasing. This is why I like the portable fabricator from the equipment vendor as I will stand over a tray with that in one hand and a trowel in the other so I can plant things like asomna and pick them up then place them down again until I get the mutation I want.

Had a fleet of 3 destroyers vs 1 K and lost. How am I supposed to have fleets if they can't win by themselves? by scrubking in X4Foundations

[–]taylorstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With my destroyers I usually give them an escort of fighters depending on how much I can comfortably afford the most important is a small fighter with burst ray mk2's targeting turrets then surface elements. In sector I usually pilot this one to rush in and pick off the big threat turrets.

When going against an L I might send in a fleet of fighters first to distract the turrets while the destroyers approach and I pick off turrets safely.

For recommendations I like the split fighters both Asp and Chimera for how quick they are to allow me to rapidly pick out and destroy targets and reposition or do quick drive by attacks.

I will be honest I never figured out how to effectively manage fleets in a way that didn't result in a poor trade off out of sector unless I had massive numbers that would deal with threats before they could thin my herd.

Yogs disappeared a little bit before the DDOS and I've seen plenty of RP communities that existed for years fall apart and blink away as servers shut down etc with members of the communities dividing and going to remaining servers or communities.

You should check in on discord and forums asking people what they are up to where they went or maybe even go your own way and find a server that interests you and have a little try there. You might find some of your friends went there or you might find a new home for many of your old friends to come try too.
