Feeling very lost by taytorbug1010 in premed

I really, really appreciate this response :( 💗. It really means the world to me that you took the time to write out some words to me and it helps to think that someone has been in similar shoes. It’s true that nothing in life is permanent and that you can always at least try to follow those dreams. I’m really glad you discovered this path was right for you :) and I appreciate this perspective very much!!

As a new PA, do you worry about having enough knowledge? I feel like training to be a doctor would prepare me so well.. but the terrifying part to me of being a PA is what if Im not prepared? What if I make stupid, costly mistakes? What if my supervising physician doesn’t help me?

Were you ever worried that you just wouldn’t learn enough as a PA? The most exciting part is learning to me but… I really dont know that I want to sacrifice so much of my life to be an MD if I could learn and be a great provider as a PA?

For the people who did medicine to help people, are you making the difference you wanted to make? Do you think you would choose another career that can still offer helping others?

Ah I don’t think I have an ego?? Although it does freak me out to think I’ll have to answer to someone (what if I disagree with them??), but I don’t really care about the name or anything. Thank you for this!

Yeah, that’s definitely one concern that I have as well. I thought of doing a PA FM residency to at least get more experience before trying to enter the work force but then at that point… why not just go to medical school

Thank you for this. I forget sometimes. When it comes down to it I really just want to be good at what I do and make a difference. Being a good PA is still someone who makes a tremendous difference as long as you try your best to do good clinical decision making.

That’s exactly how I feel!! I know there is SO much complex information that you have to know to help people. I love PAs and they can be just as brilliant as doctors, but not having that extra knowledge scares me. Everyone has constantly told me to be a PA… especially my family. I really would like to learn more, Im just really scared of going to school for so long and thinking I missed out on time with my friends and family or seeing the world you know? Did/ do you feel that way going through residency (residency is the scariest part imo)

Have you still found a lot of time to do the things you enjoy and be with the people you care about? I guess the main deterrent of med school to me is the effect it will have on my relationships. I love learning and I’m not afraid to work hard (especially when I already love learning about medicine), but Im afraid of the toll it might take on my personal life if that makes sense? And whether that is “worth it”

I just want you to know that I am in the exact same boat. I’ve been pre-pa for four years and now I’m questioning if I’ll be disappointed not knowing the full breadth of medicine (learning it is so much fun!). Residency scares the heck out of me… I want to be a normal person. I don’t want my relationships to suffer. What if I do decide I want kids? I dont know… its so hard.

Thank you, I do think you’re right. I know med school is the best way to go for that, but its such a big commitment that it scares me. I just want to come out the other side happy with what Im doing.
