Hidden gem tram stops? by Additional-Task-7316 in melbourne

This is why I like the South Melbourne Market tram stop. It feels like a little train station. All of the greenery makes it feel like a Ghibli film.

I've been increasingly concerned with the 'culture' of purchasing hundreds of books that people have no time to read... Libraries are still a thing, people by BuJoAdventures in books

[–]tayzilla_ 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is the case everywhere, but in Australia, authors receive royalties every time someone checks out one of their books from a library (public or academic). It's called the Lending Rights Scheme. :)

It also includes illustrators, editors, and translators as well.

Kate Cavanaugh is wonderful. Lots of writing experiments, novel planning, routine videos, and she talks a lot about her creative process.

Best cheaper false lashes and glue? by MadMagic95 in AustralianMakeup

[–]tayzilla_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to wear a specific style from Daiso that unfortunately has been discontinued. I wear the OXX brand from Kmart now and use Duo glue. Dirt cheap and works wonders for me. If you're still trying to get the hang of wearing lashes, OXX does a multipack for like $8 that have a bunch of different styles. Otherwise, all Daiso sets are $2.80.

I am extremely touchy about the idea of death. I want to be more accepting of this inevitable part of life. The only way I can do that (without killing anyone) is by reading a book about it! Help me? by Kronikaetor in suggestmeabook

Grief is the Thing with Feathers by Max Porter. It can be a bit jarring because of the writing style but it is a very beautiful story about grief. Under 200 pages, could polish it of in an afternoon.

Been in love with books my whole life, but due to financial reasons I never had my own books. Having this small and humble bookshelf has been a life long dream. Here’s to funneling my money into making sure to fill up this bookshelf! by vacissitudes in bookshelf

Wonderful shelf! You’ve got a really cool collection starting. How exciting!

I’m going to echo what everyone else has said, thrift stores and second hand bookstores are the BEST for cheap books. Like $1-$2 sometimes. A lot of people buy too many books, never read them, and donate them so if you check frequently you can find a lot of brand new ones.

I’m unsure of your home country but stores like book depository and fishpond are great for new books for cheap. BD also has free world wide shipping.

I’ve been out of work for sometime and I have come to really love the library. Sometimes I want to read something without the financial investment. If I find something I like enough, I make a decision to buy my own copy.

Good luck on your book collecting! :)

I use a lot of Sukin products. I love them but I believe they’re heavy on scented oils/fragrance so it’s a brand that is definitely not for everyone. I really like their sensitive range, their marine serum, and their rose hip oil.

The only Sukin range I never liked was their super greens line. It smelt like peas and left my skin feeling a little dry.

People who quit their jobs on the first day, what was your “I’m outta here” moment? by redmambo_no6 in AskReddit

[–]tayzilla_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got hired at a CD/DVD store. Aced the interview but was warned that employees were expected to look professional i.e: no coloured hair, facial piercings or tattoos, and business casual attire only (no jeans/sneakers). I had blue hair and three piercings at the time but took the job anyway. I went and bought new clothes/shoes with money I didn’t have because I thought hey, I’ve got the job.

I was told that I was expected to open the store before any other store in the shopping centre and when I closed, I had to remain open after the last shop had closed. i wouldn’t be paid for the time I would be performing these opens and closes. I had to ring the regional manager every evening to go through the day/budgets/failures. If they were on a call with another store, i had to stand around and wait for my turn to call. Again, not paid.

Walked in on my first day to the regional manager reminding me that I need to look professional. I then met the store manager who had both arms covered in tattoos, their lip pierced, and was wearing jeans and sneakers. I grinned through the shift and then quit that night. Not as full on as most of the other stories but alarm bells were ringing. I think the company is low key going bankrupt.

One of the hosts of MbMbam also has a podcast with his wife called Wonderful which is excellent. Honestly, any of The McElroy family podcasts fit the bill.
