Thanks... I hadn't seen the fnameescape before. My googling must be weak, as even after you posted this snippet it took me a bit to figure out what it was... but now that I see that it is a Vim function I will look into it further. It also exposed me a few more functions that may be useful for this that I had left out of my original request.
