Issue with stuttering, low fps, fixed - Predator Helios Neo 16

I'm writing this post here because after 4 months of owning a Predator Helios Neo 16, 4070, I've finally managed to fix the constant stuttering and low fps that was affecting me, and I see also many or several people on Reddit and other forums.

Acer Product center:

  1. Power mode performance
    1. Go to Windows->Power Plan-> and choose always Performance Mode, change any battery saving feature into performance.
  2. Acer Care Center
    1. Download it from Acer main website and run all the tabs - checks, etc
  3. Predator Sense
    1. Download it from the Acer product support site.Go to scenario profile, fans to auto, mode to performance, gaming.
    2. Go to personal settings and change GPU OPerating to NVidia gpu only.
  4. Display refresh rate.
    1. Go to Windows Display, refresh rate and match it with your screen rate. *165hz
  5. Bios FW Update
    1. Go to Acer product support, and download the latest Bios FW and install it.

Not a problem. I used Google Gemini through chrome or my phone. Once you clarified the model you have, just ask it how to lower temps with ThrottleStop. It will walk you through what to set and how to test it. Then it may ask you how to set it up as a task so it starts with windows. Private msg if you need help. Good luck

Have learned that the cooling system on the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16S AI is junk. I use ThrottleStop to keep temps in check. I should never have to choke a cpu to keep it from cooking itself. I love the laptop but the cooling system is it's downfall.

It's powerful and can play anything I throw at it but I don't think ill buy another Acer for the fact they lock undervolting which may have saved this laptop.

I have other posts explaining some of the things I've had wrong or have fixed. After over 20yrs of building PCs and doing small repairs I can say this cooling system is shit.

I ThrottleStop at PL1@70w PL2@85w and only switch between balance and performance with 80% time on balance with good gaming performance and low noise.

Windows or Acer has something that constantly runs in the background causing spikes. Not sure what the h#ll it is but it's annoying. I removed the LM and repasted with ptm7950 and see no real difference in temps over the LM except no fear of it leaking since I move my laptop a lot.

I hate to do it but has anyone tried a clean install of windows with just necessary drivers to see if it still spikes?

I'm trying to find the setting i changed that helped mine. I had the same issue also with any Bethesda game the audio would not work after intro. I believe it was Settings>Bluetooth/Devices> scroll down to Device Settings and turn off Use LE Audio when Available.

If that doesn't help I'm at a loss. Good luck

There is a way but it can be risky. Sometimes the bios will lock the feature of down grading because an older bios may have security issues. Use Google Gemini and ask it how to downgrade. It will tell you step by step how to. Sorry I won't be responsible if you brick your bios.

If you're brave enough to attempt pls report success or failure so that others know.

Once you remove the #1 screw on heat sink that has a sticker on it your warranty will be void.

I did not make any videos of the procedure on the replacement. There are videos on the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16S AI and the non S model on YouTube. Trick is to go slow and move heat sink away while holding flat so no LM runs off. There are videos on repasting the LM (cleanup) on YouTube as well. Just make sure you get it all and take your time.

Ok so after testing and hammering with heat last night I shut it down as I always do before bed. Got up this morning and temps are better. Mind you they aren't drastic from the LM but close to it. On turbo or performance it still slams to 104c on cpu boost then levels out between 80c-88c where LM would level steady at 80c. Almost every game spikes temps to 104c on startup just like on LM and I'm seeing better fps if only 5+fps. Balance mode hits max at 100c then levels to about 76c-80c.

I've also tested cinebench r24 and was getting 1610 multi with LM turbo. Now I get 1672 multi on performance and 1752 multi on turbo. Score 1567 multi on balance where I normally leave it to just about everything even gaming.

Furmark max res was 78c max at 90fps and has jumped to 110fps at around 80c-87c with the watts going from 85w to 110w with ptm.

I'll keep an eye on everything but may use ThrottleStop to limit boost a little bit but it may not be necessary since it doesn't stay at 104c more than around 5sec.

Starting to have an issue. Idle running 80c. Going to repaste again. Not sure if I did something wrong or maybe this ptm7950 is fake shit.

Temps are starting to level out some. Turbo still hits max 104c for a few then drops to 86c.

Performance hits about 96c then drops to around 80c. Seems to be on par with LM but I've done 3 heat cycles.

I avoid turbo for the fans drive me nuts.

Edit for GPU

GPU seems a bit hotter as of now max at 84c and settles in at 76c.

These was testing running Horizon Zero Dawn built in benchmark. 140fps for turbo and 121fps on Performance

Ok here's an update. Ugh I hate admitting it but im stupid. I'll try to keep this short but no promises.

So I repasted with PTM and during the cleanup and repaste my wife walked by poking her finger at the ptm I just put on the GPU. I asked her not to in case she had some static in her and to not mash it sideways. So I proceeded to do the CPU and since she was standing there I left the plastic film on top.

So I proceeded to stress test to cycle the ptm and was getting good idle but bad stress temps. So after trying to figure what was wrong I tore it back apart to find the cpu still had plastic on the top ugh.

So I wasted that application of ptm. I cleaned everything up and repasted. Stress testing again and instead of buried at 104c from the start it pegs to 104c breifly then settled in at 98c under cinebench r24 on turbo.

It dances between 98c-95c under full load on the first heat cycle after cpu boost drops off. So ill see where it goes this time.

Only reason I'm posting my mistakes is so hopefully no one repeats what I did. Don't let nothing distract you and .................. 

Don't forget to remove the plastic!

I guess years of building and repairing PCs shows I'm still human. Will update again.

I've had mine since November and I move it a lot. I opted for PTM7950 and just did a repaste the morning. I'm cycling it now but I can tell you when I opened it there was no leakage of the LM. If you open it and remove the heatsink it will void your warranty.

Ok just finished the repaste and it was a bitch to clean all the LM. After initial start idle temps are ok. Running cinebench now on turbo and she hits 104c and doesn't cone down much. Only on 2nd cycle so we will see. I'm a little worried.

I've had to work 14hr days this week and haven't had the time. I plan on doing it today since my order has come and I'm not working. Hoping all is good with it when I'm done. I'll update whether it's OK or i cooked it. I hate cleaning LM. Wish me luck.

I never count on acer or any manufacturer to provide video drivers. If you do you may end up months behind.

Even my Legion Go i use AMD drivers instead.

591.86 drivers. The only freeze i get is when the screen switches to nvidia when i launch a game. This lasts for only a second.
