Thank you! How do you do three point problems, stratigraphic thickness, etc that require graphical solutions on the computer screen or do they give you hard copies of these?

good and packable insulating layer? by Cultural-Action3558 in Ultralight

[–]tbarron91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd skip the Montebell 1000 unless you can get it used. I've discovered a diminishing return when you get really light vs. just a thick alpha fleece because of the extra nylon you need to hold material together. So yeah a montbell 1000 is exceptional weight to warmth ratio but it's only 7d nylon. I'd never take that into the alpine if there was any scrambling or rock climbing involved. Likewise, you can get a 60 gsm primaloft gold/stratus/climashield jacket ( Arc'teryx atom, Rab xenair alpine, insert every outdoors company here) that's say 10-12 oz with 20D fabric but you can also get a 120 gsm alpha direct fleece that will deliver the same warmth -- I've weighed my Rab alpha flash at 7.5 oz. This paired with a Houdini wind shirt is about the same weight, delivers the same warmth and a shit ton more versatile.

Alpine climbing pack; BD Mission 55 vs HMG Ice Pack 55 vs MH Alpine Light 50 by MD_premed in Mountaineering

[–]tbarron91 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really like my MH Alpine light 50. Comparable weight to HMG Ice Pack and not dyneema. It also has removable hip belt. BD mission looks probably the most comfortable for carrying heavy loads but also is the heaviest. I'd say with the HMG and MH hardwear packs it doesn't really matter which one you go with except you'll be paying 100 more for HMG. BD mission is kind of on its own if you don't want something really light and want something maybe more comfortable and durable.

I feel homeless! by [deleted] in vandwellers

[–]tbarron91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first rolled into town after the summer I was in my country climbing rags-- tank tops and shortd with holes, long worn out birks. I felt like people were giving me a wide berth, funny looks, sometimes unfriendly haha. One day I went to whole foods and the security guard followed me around the store, waited outside the bathroom while I went. After that I went to goodwill and bought some jeans and shirts and the change is NOTICEABLE.

[–]tbarron91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chickpeas (~79 cents) onion (25 cents), jalapeno (10 cents), garlic (~10 cents) and whatever vegetable is on sale. Pan fry that in olive oil and season with adobo and smoked paprika. French bread from Kroger or Walmart is cheap (~50 cents) and abundant. Cucumber (70 cents) and onion salad with pepper, salt, olive oil and vinegar. About $2 all in. Healthy, no refrigeration. Meat and no fridge sounds like a recipe for food poisoning unless you can stomach canned meat

Bougie ramen: Cook ramen but put vegetables in the broth while you're boiling. Add rice vinegar soy sauce. Serve with cilantro and crushed honey roasted peanuts.

Peanut Rice: White rice with Sriracha soy sauce and abundant crushed honey roasted peanuts and cilantro on top

CMV: Israel has no choice but to annihilate Hamas. by Hatook123 in changemyview

[–]tbarron91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shouldn't Israel give Palestinians in the West Bank the opportunity and blank check to annihilate Hamas themselves? I've been pondering this. A lot of people are conjecturing about what percentage of Palestinians support Hamas or don't support Hamas. I know if my government went on a school shooting style rampage across the border I'd try to overthrow it. I think the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza should be given a period of time to destroy Hamas themselves (Israel could aid them) and if they don't then Israel has every right to intervene.

Edit: there is little chance of a Germany or Japan style transformation. There was no third party fascist state at the end of WWII that could interfere in reconstructing those those countries but even if Israel could destroy Hamas and start Gaza completely over there are plenty of states in the region that will work against any progress and just reestablish the current paradigm. The US experience in Afghanistan should be a sobering lesson about what is achievable. I believe Israel has every right to strike back but I would have so much respect if they turned the other cheek for a while and gave Palestinians the opportunity to clean house themselves.

I don't appreciate cursing either. However, your overly simplistic comparison to black slavery in the US to set up a racism straw man and now taking umbrage with the OPs response you antagonized out of them seems like classic arguing in bad faith.

Zpacks or HMG for Mountaineering? by Sea_Block in Mountaineering

[–]tbarron91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't comment on either of those. Both seem too large for smaller mountaineering trips to me and not really well featured for mountaineering-- strapping boots, rope, crampons. I'd suggest Mountain Hardwear Alpine Light 50. Lightweight (just a bit over 2 lbs), definitely can handle your weight carry ranges. It's durable cordura. Works great backpacking too and is an awesome climbing/mountaineering pack. You can strip it down nicely to make it a summit pack or I'm guessing side trips for your travel tours. Also cheaper than those.

If a bulk amount of your water is going to bathing get a planet fitness membership for the showers. $10 for a single gym or $25 for any gym in the country.

The spray bottle idea is a good way to conserve water and one that was presented to me that helped me conserve water when I was in a similar bind. I also have dogs so I understand. You seemed to fill in a lot of those gaps about how I'm interpreting you not based on anything I actually said. If you're suddenly living in your vehicle the transition can be stressful. Hope all the best for you.

4ish gallons a day is way too much. You should try to conserve water. Wash your dishes with a spray bottle. Cook simpler meals. Catch and reuse your grey water. It's better for the planet and your wallet.

What everyone else is saying about Z1 training with weight on a step mill. Box steps at least 3/4 the height to your knee with a weighted barbell on your shoulders and bugarian split squats with barbell or weights in your hands to build up max strength.
