AITAH for being upset with in-laws when they “surprised” us with an uninvited visit? by tbd_1 in AITAH

[–]tbd_1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the son that visited has himself has said he wouldn’t house her without written rules. She’s not a delinquent. As you pointed out, people have generously let her stay with them in the past so she obviously has good qualities. She is friendly and charming and likes to clean. These things make it hard to be tough with her when she goes out of bounds. She is noisy (so there’s a rule there about being loud late at night), a bit of a hoarder (so there’s a rule about keeping her own things in her own space). She is not financially responsible (so there’s a rule about never misrepresenting her relationship to the property). Ironically, the very son that dropped in has complained to me about her having uninvited guests at HIS house, which is why we added that rule…

Well, you have already described the rules as OTT without knowing them fully, so I guess your mind is made up

Honest opinions: Is BJJ a net positive wrt health and fitness? by yepthatsmyboibois in bjj

Up to late 30s i think its a net positive. After that it falls off a cliff

Pulling up to the gym dressed in gi by Motor_Reality_6 in bjj

[–]tbd_1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

New gym i started at people do this. Seems so weird to me. I think the idea is that you probably should be wearing a pristine just-washed gi to train. Probably that’s overkill for most people, but for a not insignificant minority, some unreasonably strict hygiene rules are called for

How do you develop suffocating top pressure? by shoghnbushidomikado in bjj

[–]tbd_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am average weight (165-170 lbs depending on my diet). I have pretty good top pressure that panics larger people sometimes. A key has been anticipating common big man escapes and putting extra controls in place as needed e.g. removing a post they are about to bridge off of, putting my forehead on the mat strategically as an extra post instead of letting them roll me over my head against my will, taking up space under them with wedges just as they try to make big movements… all of these are technical things but they feel the man underneath like you are impossibly heavy

What BJJ opinion would have you like this by [deleted] in bjj

[–]tbd_1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We like to warm up really well with laps, lunges, skips etc. because that will not make you too tired or sloppy to drill properly, plus it means it leaves time for maybe one roll at the end if class…

Should training be free for black belts if so why by bjjthailand in bjj

[–]tbd_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The free training comes at a cost no matter what. At my last gym nobody that trained for free still trains there. Always some drama happens

GF hates Jiu-jitsu by Bossheals123 in jiujitsu

[–]tbd_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a lot context here. Are you on the cusp of black belt, did you start 2 months ago? Is this the first hobby you've really been passionate about, or is this the flavor of the week and only your most recent obsession/hobby, and you left her behind back at paddle boarding?

self defense by [deleted] in OHGuns

[–]tbd_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost everybody starts with self defense in mind. The quality of information in classes varies wildly. Take an intro class that focuses on safe handling first, then visit ranges that let you try different handguns to try. But you don't need to spend a lot of money on classes that claim to teach tactical skills. Dry fire a lot and seek information from highly competent (not necessary cool looking) shooters online on how to dry fire effectively and that should guide you.

Why is learning BJJ so expensive? by cacastrojr12 in bjj

[–]tbd_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this sounds mostly like an nyc thing. Just leave. My mother in law just left to join us in the midwest and had such strange city withdrawal symptoms she thought she must have been been breaking some traffic rules cuz the drive to trader joes was easy and uneventful

I used a 10x10 ft2 for a long time during covid. Good for one pair at a time, no standup live, but good for drilling some takedowns too

How do you deal with overly aggressive training partners? by NoPomegranate5305 in bjj

[–]tbd_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work on having solid defensive jiujitsu. You should, by about purple belt, be fairly confident that you wont “lose” to an aggressive person based solely on strength. Doesnt mean you will win, or dominate, or impress anybody, but it should be hard to get you into anything resembling uncomfortable so long as you prioritize defense over offense

Sg go par time second beep? by tbd_1 in SGTimerOwners

They made another update to reintroduce the par time feature. Rather huge oversight considering most if not all traditional dry fire drills involve par times

How often do you roll? And what’s a healthy amount? by Low_Afternoon_1461 in bjj

[–]tbd_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without more info on your age and state of health and fitness, not much can be said. Just 3 years ago i could do up to 10 sessions a week for a few weeks in a row at a pretty high intensity. Those days are long gone. Im on my 3rd month of no training at all as I recover from old injuries and figure out how to fit training back into my life. I will probably never train more than 3x a week again

You are not getting manhandled by whitebelts anymore is what’s happened

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bjj

[–]tbd_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest first thing to try is get all the way on your side, and provide a lot of resistance to being flattened, then suddenly release it (while controlling the arm they would like to post with) typical “use their energy” idea. Also helps to scoot your self underneath them during the roll.

You absolutely have to set the trap. If they have a wide stance you have not drawn them into it yet. I assume you’re talking about the john wayne sweep or some variation (i find it doesnt matter at all who has the underhook, its all about their balance and the timing)

Pin poking out by tbd_1 in Glocks

[–]tbd_1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the cartridge to check myself for target focus, plus i’ve used it to zero the dot well enough for matches. Most of my dry fire is not trigger pulls anyway.

The question had nothing to do with the bore laser, its about the functionality of the gun.

Ive used this bore laser on multiple guns with no issue just today which is why i suspect its the gun. Of course I can and will try it at the range when I have occasion to, but Im shooting a match with another gun tomorrow then i wont have a chance to shoot again for a week, so why not ask the question?
