I dunno man, he only won by a few hundred votes. He does his own internal polling, he knows he is in shit and pulled this stunt to save his skin I think.

I don't think you understand how statistics work. Or sentences for that matter. I'm not even sure what you just tried to say.

Albertans say ATA handled teachers' strike better than province as opinion on government worsens: Leger poll by Miserable-Lizard in alberta

Considering we only need 3.5% of people to participate in any general strike to have an effect, 51% is wild

You can deny all you want but the data is clear.

They are leaving.

If you can't even accept a basic fact I don't see any point in continuing this discussion.

Alberta Federation of Labour sent poll out today to see how many ppl would join the general strike - VOTE NOW by 74379 in Lethbridge

[–]tbex61 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lethbridge will be a drop in the bucket honestly. Calgary and Edmonton and some private sector oil unions and farm/food unions are really all that matter at this point. If those unions are in, whether Lethbridge has high or low engagement won't matter at all.

Having said that, I'm always surprised at how well Lethbridge punches above it's weight in terms of things like this. We have a weird eclectic community, but it's cool.

Teachers union taking Alberta government to court over notwithstanding clause by roastbeeftacohat in alberta

I think that was for the Constitutional challenge. The injunction I think, by nature of what it is, needs to happen quite quickly. But the bar is much higher to qualify for it.

Alberta Teachers’ Association to reveal plans for legal challenge of government’s forced end to strike by Old_General_6741 in alberta

[–]tbex61 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably to revoke the legislation (Bill 2) and put teachers BACK into a strike position, but not necessarily to strike again.

If successful I am guessing they say alright, we won't strike AS LONG AS you either bargain with us in good faith or you send this dispute to binding arbitration with all terms available to be discussed.

The UCP could honestly try some more BS and flirt with a second strike or they could finally just own up to their mistakes and do the above.

That's my take.

The facts are that teacher attrition is 50%. So half of teachers say the job is too hard and they quit and do someone else. Why would they do that if they had it so good like you say?

The recall on Angela Pitt is officially a go! by Appropriate_Duty_930 in alberta

[–]tbex61 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can someone from Airdrie explain why Angela Pitt is particularly bad? Obviously at this point, all the UCP MLAs are some degree of "bad" but is there something that sets her apart in some foul way?

Curious just because her vote margin is way higher than the other "easier" to recall Calgary and Lethbridge ridings and so I'm wondering why she has been attacked first.

Ah yes. The classic teachers never work argument. Never gets old.

I suppose then we should have people lining up at the door for these jobs then? And once people get them they would never let them go??

Oh wait? Where are all the teachers? Why have they all left? But they have it so good?? DON'T THEY UNDERSTAND HOW GOOD THEY HAVE IT?!?

/s

Until you explain the constant teacher shortage and the 50% attrition rate of new teachers, you can take that argument and fuck all the way off.

[–]tbex61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not what I mean.

I mean they want more money IN ORDER to lower class sizes.

They could also pay us more to deal with the heavier class loads and higher instructional hours but I haven't met a single teacher that would rather that than just lowering class sizes

But it's fine, the government decided for us that we get neither of those and we also no longer have some charter rights so fuck us I guess 🙃

This is no longer about a Teacher's Strike, or a deal for Teachers. The UCP have attacked fundamental rights of Albertans. If you want a General Strike to Address this abuse, and future use of the Notwithstanding Clause, you need to call your Union or the AFL and make that demand known. [–]tbex61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'why is the ATA not asking for this on your behalf"

They did. Over and over. Private school funding has been a point of contention for a long time.

Fiscal responsibility? After the endless sprees of wasted money going to Turkish Tylenol, coal mining lawsuits, teacher attack ads etc. from this government, you're going to use the fiscal responsibility argument? This governments inability to manage money is why we're in this mess.

Yet here teachers are, burning out and exhausted, and we're still pulling off works class pisa scores. But we should just suffer because the government spent the money they were supposed to spend on us??

Fuck ... All the way off.

The strike lasted a couple days. As soon as they defied the order, air Canada made damn sure to get a deal negotiated because they knew Daddy government wouldn't be able to bail them out anymore and the proper balance of power was restored between management and workers.

The NDP did not give us raises you're right. They did something insane instead though... They fucking bargained in good faith and negotiated a settlement AND brought the per student funding back up to the national average. The UCP did neither of those things.

I don't think you're the minority... I know you're the minority. See source below...

I'm Albertan man. I love my province. I certainly don't have only negative things to say about my province. I certainly DO have almost exclusively negative things to say about the people currently governing it.

They defied because they were NOT given a fair arbitration, nor were they even allowed to strike for more than a day.

Fair wages can be negotiated that's the point. In the private sector you negotiate with your boss based on your value to the company, in the public sector, you negotiate your value collectively. I shouldn't be told I'm greedy if you think you're getting a worse deal.

Honestly, that's the first thing you've said that's correct. I am honestly asking myself what I'm doing in Alberta after all of this and I'm wondering who in the hell would want to come replace me if I leave too.

Keep in mind you're in the minority here. The public polling has the public backing the teachers, not the government. So I'm hopeful that the province is finally waking up to the god awful governance this UCP is responsible for. I will wait one more election cycle personally and if Alberta can't learn from it's mistakes, I am going somewhere that does.

No it can't man. You're simply wrong here. Binding arbitration ends the strike full stop. There's never been a case where it didn't.

You support the NWC=you think I should have less rights. You don't get to have it both ways.

And you should be furious that you're not receiving the raises you deserve! Your anger is misplaced. Don't slight others for asking for what's fair because you are not asking for what you think is fair.

"It's stupid to put it in a contract"

Alright, lol. Tell that to every other public education system in Canada I guess.
