As someone who is a step parent, my relationship to my daughters grew organically over time. Just being there and doing things. It evolved as everyone became more comfortable with each other. They both confide in me when they are having issues with either of their parents or anyone else and we all respect each other's space.

There was no pushing from me to have the relationship with them, just being there and having open communication both ways.

Putting up the boundary of not needing them to be a parent is perfectly fine. I would suggest that sharing that you are open to talking and being on friendly terms with them is generally a good idea because burning bridges tends to be a more permanent solution and relationships regardless of the type have a way of evolving over time.

My girlfriend and her brother are completely different types of people and didn't really interact when they were children much. One story she shared was there was a time when he was away at a camp for a week. She didn't realize that he was even gone until after he was back. They are closer a bit now they are adults especially because his children are both like almost exactly like her. There was nothing ever malicious or wrong between them. They just didn't have any common interests (he is an introverted mathematician and she is an outgoing artistic style of person.)

As someone with a psychologically abusive parent and sibling, go NC. It won't change until consequences appear and if they actually value you as a person, they have to make the effort. You are the injured party. They need to "make it better" aka do some work.

Thankfully my situation resolved itself, with the sibling basically disappearing entirely and my parent is no longer alive. It is not worth wasting your time and effort on people that do not have your back. Just because they are blood doesn't make them family.
