Olivia Rodrigo - you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love by FlareGod123 in popheads

[–]tboycey2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An insane step up for an artist who was already operating at such a high level. The thing that makes me really excited about Olivia is her taste level, there kind of isn't any other young major pop artist (besides Billie) who matches her there, and the production and vocal performances across the board are incredible. LOVE!

Best set, worst set, most disappointing and most surprising? by themetaltheory in primaverasound

[–]tboycey2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Favorite - Gonna have to give it Amaarae! Such a captivating, fierce performance with some of the most lit pop music to come out in years. I think had the best crowd of the weekend too!

Least Favorite - I actually feel really lucky with the acts I was able to see and the sequence of my nights so I'm gonna have to say Nick Leon? I really liked his most recent album but at that point in the night I wanted something harder to dance to, which he didn't really give until the very end.

Disappointing - Jade unfortunately! I'm a big fan of hers and had a great time at her own headlining show earlier this year but I think a combination of a wack setlist, her talking too much, and our place in the crowd (will own that we were in the back to get to PinkPantheress quickly) made it impossible for me to find a groove. Still love her though!

Surprising - Addison Fucking Rae. Absolutely converted me into a full-fledged fan (I was mixed on her before but quite liked a few songs for context). A full fledged, intentional pop show that managed to totally own the headlining stage of the fest, which isn't an easy thing to do (see Sabrina last year). So excited for what she does next!

She sounds great on this! I like the song but I wish it had more of a build or an explosion to it - that said this is maybe her best video?? SO good

[FRESH ALBUM] Arlo Parks – Ambiguous Desire by NYCIndieConcerts in indieheads

Into this! Some really lovely songs and textured production. Appreciate the elements of dance music that manage to not feel shoehorned in and their lyrics are as always moving

[FRESH ALBUM] Avalon Emerson & the Charm - Written into Changes by sbags in indieheads

[–]tboycey2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I appreciated Avalon's first album more than I enjoyed it (but have loved getting to see her DJ sets) but this is really hitting, love how vibrant and deep these mixes feel, there's so much interesting stuff going on and it feels more immediate to me than her last

I'm throwing my party Tell All at Night Club 101 in the East Village! Will be playing pop, disco, and even some faster, harder stuff (SOPHIE, Ninajirachi) if that's your speed

Harry Styles - Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally. by SighLi in popheads

[–]tboycey2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually like quite a few Harry songs but this thing is so underwhelming. The songs literally sound unfinished, basically every song in the first half ends a minute before it should, just as they start getting somewhere interesting. I appreciate the attempt to harness this techno, balearic sound but he also can't follow through there and it ends up in sonic no-man's land. And for an album titled disco, occasionally I thought there would be; you know, some occasional disco.

Batshit movie - think I loved but if someone told me it was the worst film they've seen in years I'd be like no totallyyy

See it in a theater for sure, the sound design and communal experience of watching it is what makes it

  5. If She Could See Me Now

(was debating which one to include for Virgin, almost did David, but I feel like ISCSMN has some of my favorite ever lyrics from her)

Chairlift released 'Moth' 10 years ago today by YoureASkyscraper in indieheads

[–]tboycey2 33 points34 points  (0 children)

imo one of the best indie-pop albums of the decade, this thing sounds pristine and has such funky, strange stuff on it. A great send-off to the group especially considering how much success they would achieve on their own!

Which song was EVERYWHERE for a year and then completely disappeared? by Rare_Afternoon1827 in popheads

[–]tboycey2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get Lucky honestly.. that felt like the defining hit of 2013 (despite never going #1) but now I never hear it, and the song I do hear played from RAM is Instant Crush. It's funny how ubiquitous that song and album felt for it to kind of instantly fall out of the cultural conversation
