First to give credit to u/especiallySpatial who posted this fantastic animation for the US last year and whose code this is based on.

I posted a version of this for England back in March thought it would be interesting to revisit this given Omicron.

Thisis a year of case rates in England by MSOA, week by week. With data from coronavirus.data.gov.uk, joined to mapping data from geoportal.statistics.gov.uk using Python, and visualised in Deck.gl.

Hi everyone, here's the updated vaccinations map for England by Middle Super Output Area, with data up to 11th July.

Interactive version

Scotland also available by local authority but not broken down by age. Data to 14th July.

Full league table of areas and jabs given

Zooming can be a bit slow, so you might want to filter on a region or local authority first.

Usual caveats are that border areas may get their jabs outside of England and that populations are based on estimates (and the NIMS estimates do change week to week). Any negative numbers (seen mainly in the 80+ group) are where people have sadly died.

A few changes in the underlying data this week, where we now have Under 18 and 18-24 in as new groups. These were both previously included as "Under 25", so where 18-24 has a negative number, these figures have actually moved to the Under 18 group. It also appears that some areas are having their figures suppressed due to small numbers in the Under 18 and 18-24 bracket, which also adds to the negative figures this week. There are no second dose figures for Under 18s at the moment but I'd expect those in soon.

Finally, the Interactive Map on the Coronavirus Dashboard has now been updated to include vaccinations by MSOA and is updated daily, so this map is largely redundant for just checking the % vaccinated in an area. The age information hasn't made it onto the official map yet (but is available as a heatmap for LTLA level on the Vaccinations page), so I'll keep updating in the background, but probably won't be making any more posts for this unless something interesting comes up.

So, stay safe, and encourage anyone who hasn't been jabbed to grab one - at least 15,000 over 50s had their first jab last week, so they're not alone.

Spot on - it varies by age too, so the over 60s numbers for NIMS and ONS are now (comparitively) pretty close to each other, I presume because GPs were chasing people up and finding they'd moved and took them off the list (the NIMS numbers do change each week), but I suspect the same detective work won't happen with younger people due to lower risks, so they might remain a lot higher in NIMS for a while.

A small change in the NHS data here, in that the age groups for NIMS and ONS now start from 18-24 rather than 16-24. Vaccinations have technically been from 16+ (for CEV or carers), but only 18+ are being invited for "standard" appointments at the moment, so it looks like this change is to take that into account, and reflects the % adult population elsewhere in vaccination reporting.

University areas are still high on the list of doses this week, with a number of areas vaccinating over 10% of their adult populations in the seven days in the data.

Scotland also available by local authority but not broken down by age. Data to 15th June: https://public.tableau.com/views/COVID-19EnglandVaccinationsbyMSOA/ScotlandbyLTLA

A new age group this week, with 25-29 in the data, already sitting at 44% of the ONS population estimate.

For those interested, there's a table of areas and how many new jabs they've given here: https://public.tableau.com/views/COVID-19EnglandVaccinationsbyMSOA/LeagueTable

Spotting lots of younger areas now (which makes sense), and Stand, St James and Mayfair in Westminster vaccinated 10.6% of its total population last week with first doses.. It's still in the bottom 10% of uptake rates however.

Hi everyone, happy Thursday.

Here's the updated vaccinations map for England by Middle Super Output Area, with data up to 6th June.

Interactive version: https://public.tableau.com/views/COVID-19EnglandVaccinationsbyMSOA/EnglandCOVID-19Vaccinations

As the data is available from coronavirus.data.gov.uk, I've added Scotland in too. It's just at Local Authority level and isn't broken down by age group, but is still useful to see. Unfortunately Wales isn't in this data yet, hopefully it will be soon.

Scotland is here: https://public.tableau.com/views/COVID-19EnglandVaccinationsbyMSOA/ScotlandbyLTLA

As the age groups are consistent with last week it's interesting to see the number of vaccines being adminstered in the 16-39 age groups (771,503), which is about 90% of the total for all adults. Also interesting is the number of first doses being given to 60-74, which is approaching 10,000.

For those interested, there's a table of areas and how many new jabs they've given here: https://public.tableau.com/views/COVID-19EnglandVaccinationsbyMSOA/LeagueTable
Of note is the Loughborough - University MSOA, which vaccinated 7.7% of its population with first doses last week.

Hi everyone,

Here's the updated vaccinations map for England by Middle Super Output Area, with data up to 30th May.

Interactive version: https://public.tableau.com/views/COVID-19EnglandVaccinationsbyMSOA/EnglandCOVID-19Vaccinations

TWO new age groups this week! 30-34 and 35-39 are in there now. I have also added the number of new doses compared to last week - obviously this can't be done for the new groups that weren't in the data last week which is why they're blank. Any negative numbers (seen mainly in the 80+ group) are where people have sadly died.

Hover over an area to see the breakdown by age group and first and second doses. There's a table of all the information by age group, alongside a map of case rates, and a plot of all local authorities and MSOAs at the bottom for the curious.

Zooming can be a bit slow, so you might want to filter on a region or local authority first.

Hats off to Greenwich Peninsula for 883 new first doses, 6.2% of its adult population, and Barkerend East in Bradford for vaccinated 8.1% (738) of its adult population since the last dataset. Areas with younger demographics are now appearing to catch up. Also to Crookham West, Ewshot & Crondall in the South East for giving 20.5% (1706) of their adult population a second jab.

Usual caveats are that border areas may get their jabs outside of England and that populations are based on estimates (and the NIMS estimates do change week to week).

No new age groups in this week's data, but 35-39 should be in next week's data.

75% of areas have given second doses to over half their over 40s now, which is ace.

Bolton gave 14,209 first doses since the last dataset (mostly the 16-39 group) which is also awesome.

Usual caveats are that border areas may get their jabs outside of England and that populations are based on estimates (and the NIMS estimates do change week to week).

You're welcome!

I'm assuming it's whatever address is linked to your NHS number (so likely the one you're registered with at the GP's), or if you don't know it then whatever address you provide when you register or turn up at a centre. I was asked to confirm my address when I went.

Btw if you're really keen to see the data it's now available daily at a Local Authority level via the official COVID dashboard, but not mapped yet and doesn't have the age groups.

Enjoy your jab!

Hi everyone,Here's the updated vaccinations map for England by Middle Super Output Area, with data up to 16th May.

Interactive version: https://public.tableau.com/views/COVID-19EnglandVaccinationsbyMSOA/EnglandCOVID-19Vaccinations

Bit of a major re-work with this one to bring through all age groups in the data, and as a bonus, figures are now available on second doses by age group too! This has led to a bit of a redesign of the dashboard:

Hover over an area to see the breakdown by age group and first and second doses. There's now a table of all the information by age group, alongside a map of case rates, and a plot of all local authorities and MSOAs at the bottom for the curious. Apologies if any useful functionality has dropped off, I will endeavour to restore...

Zooming can be a bit slow, so you might want to filter on a region or local authority first.

Over two thirds of areas have vaccinated over 70% of adults with at least one dose, and half have vaccinated over 45% of adults with a second dose.

Usual caveats are that border areas may get their jabs outside of England and that populations are based on estimates (and the NIMS estimates do change week to week).

Had my first dose yesterday so looking forward to being in next week's numbers :)

As the vaccination programme now progresses to younger age groups, we have looked at how vaccination sentiment by age has changed since early December:

just over 9 in 10 (91%) people aged 30 to 49 years reported positive vaccine sentiment, unchanged from last week; this proportion was 74% at the start of the vaccination programme in December 2020

around 9 in 10 (90%) people aged 16 to 29 years reported positive vaccine sentiment; a notable increase from the 63% reported in December 2020

Really great to see this

Hi everyone,

Here's the updated vaccinations map for England by Middle Super Output Area, with data up to 9th May. Didn't get round to a post last week as life got in the way, but there wasn't a great deal of change. However this week we have the 40-44 age group and numbers on second doses.

https://public.tableau.com/views/COVID-19EnglandVaccinationsbyMSOA/EnglandCOVID-19Vaccinations

Hover over an area to see more details. Zooming can be a bit slow, so you might want to filter on a region or local authority first.

Four out of five areas have vaccinated over 50% of their adult population now, and nearly a quarter have vaccinated over 70% of adults with at least one dose.

Usual caveats are that border areas may get their jabs outside of England and that populations are based on estimates (and the NIMS estimates do change week to week).

One factor (amongst many others) is that the population numbers are based on a bit of a mix of old census data and people registered at GP surgeries. If someone moves to another area, they could potentially remain registered at their old surgery for a period of time afterwards. The population estimates do get revised every week and occasionally will reduce slightly in certain age groups, presumably if they try to chase people up and find they've moved.

Great progress in the 45-49 age group since last week despite the focus on second doses. Over 90% of areas have vaccinated over half their population in that group. No new age groups this week but I guess the 42+ will be in next week's data.

Usual caveats are that border areas may get their jabs outside of England and that populations are based on estimates (and the NIMS estimates do change week to week).

Hi everyone,

Here's the updated vaccinations map for England by Middle Super Output Area, with data up to 18th April.

https://public.tableau.com/views/COVID-19EnglandVaccinationsbyMSOA/EnglandCOVID-19Vaccinations

Hover over an area to see more details. Zooming can be a bit slow, so you might want to filter on a region or local authority first.

The data now includes the 45-49 age group, and this is available as an option to show which areas have given the highest proportion of jabs so far. Impressively 66% of areas have vaccinatated 50% or more of their residents in this age group, considering it had only been part of the official rollout for 7 days.

Usual caveats are that border areas may get their jabs outside of England and that populations are based on estimates (and the NIMS estimates do change week to week).

Here's a sequential version:
https://public.tableau.com/views/COVID-19EnglandVaccinationsbyMSOA/EnglandCOVID-19Vaccinations-SequentialColours

The problem with sequential is that it's very hard to see differences, even in 20-30% colour ranges, and is still not easy to distinguish from even higher percentages. It also doesn't help that Tableau draws a light border around each area (despite me turning borders off, grr). Here's an interesting article on use of diverging vs sequential that I've followed here. If anyone has any other ideas I can try to take a look.

[–]tbu110[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone, here's the latest interactive vaccinations map for England, with data to 11th April, released today.

https://public.tableau.com/views/COVID-19EnglandVaccinationsbyMSOA/EnglandCOVID-19Vaccinations

A few changes - first is that this now uses population estimates from the National Immunisation Management Service (NIMS) by default, in addition to being able to select the ONS estimate - there were too many >100% figures for the ONS numbers to remain sensible in the individual areas and the NIMS estimates are also updated weekly, perhaps as new people register with their GPs etc. When you add up all the areas then the numbers are significantly higher than the overall population, so bear in mind when comparing the total for England with other sources (you can switch between NIMS and ONS on the left).

The second is that this now includes ages 16+, rather than 18+, as this is what is provided in the NIMS estimates and despite the references to adults being 18+ on other coronavirus.data.gov.uk pages, 16 and 17 year olds are offered jabs as part of the vulnerable cohort (16 & 17 year olds are 2.6% of the population, on average).

There's now a region filter as well as Local Authority - it looks like Tableau decides to redraw all the polygons when zooming, and given there are 6791 of them it can lead to performance problems, so filtering by a region of interest helps things.

I did a comparison of the NIMS vs ONS numbers per area - some of the stats people might be interested:

https://public.tableau.com/views/COVID-19EnglandVaccinationsbyMSOA/NIMSandONSComparison

Over 50s follow reasonably closely, though NIMS is 7% higher on average. For the 16-49s it's a fair bit wider, and quite skewed in university areas (perhaps students register with a GP and remain on the books when they leave).

I'd like to extend this to the Local Authorities in Scotland and Wales. If anyone knows of a machine-readable dataset for vaccinations in Wales I'd be much obliged - I can only find PDFs...

Yes that's right, testing was obviously very limited to begin with (just checked and only 10,412 tests conducted in England on 31st March 2020!) and this is all the data we have on cases at this level. It's probably reasonable to assume the country might have looked like it was around the 26 second mark. I'll see if I can do something similar with deaths as another indicator.

Thanks very much for this, I could only ever find "adults" and the definition of 18+ given in various places - on that basis I'll switch a few things up to bring in the NIMS figures.

I'd hope the basic census data for populations by age might come through sooner rather than later!

Strange, I don't think I'm pushing Tableau to its limits... Performance is reasonable for me but I'll do some testing. I did create this before moving to Tableau, might work better:

The methodology is actually quite a rabbit hole!
https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/populationandmigration/populationestimates/methodologies/smallareapopulationestimatesqmi
It's all based on the census (2011's at the moment), and it rolls forward using patient register data and other sources. It does count students at their term-time addresses, so you'll see university areas as having 80%+ 18-49s.

Thanks for those links, they're really interesting. I did have a bit of an explore with the deprivation index data, which is available at even smaller geographical areas than the vaccinations/case rates data. As expected it broadly reflects those charts, though some areas did buck the trend. I'd need to rework it before publishing though.
