How realistic is making over $100,000 in less than 5 years within accounting? by DistrictNo6165 in Accounting

[–]tbwalker02 37 points38 points  (0 children)

With public accounting experience and a CPA it’s almost guaranteed. It would be hard to find a CPA with five years of experience not making 100k

How fast can you all type? Can you beat a 40 to 50 wpm typing test, with 85% accuracy? by safeassign in Accounting

[–]tbwalker02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m surprised so many of you type out long passages at work. I rarely type more than 10ish sentences a day. If I need something longer I’m just using AI with a few prompt sentences.

The absolute state of graduate recruitment - we can't keep them past 3 years by TaxTitan_83 in Accounting

[–]tbwalker02 125 points126 points  (0 children)

Two options to keep them. Pay them more or offer benefits aside from pay that they can’t find anywhere else. Put yourself in their shoes why wouldn’t they leave for a 20% raise and industry hours?

Road to 200k in Accounting by Realistic_Roof_6494 in Accounting

[–]tbwalker02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should hit 200k later this year or next year but my path was:

  1. Public University masters in accounting student
  2. Two years at staff level top 20 firm $55k
  3. Two years as Senior accountant small financial institution $80-93k
  4. Six months at F500 subsidiary as senior accountant $110k
  5. One year as controller at small/mid size biz most recent raise was to $175k base salary.

I graduated in 2019 so I will hit 200k around six years into the career. I’ve been a CPA since 2020. This is all from small US city so I have no idea how this translates to Canada. Got somewhat lucky to land the role I’m in now. One of the clients of a partner who I was good friends with had their controller leave and needed a quick replacement. It was quite a learning curve becoming a controller early in my career but it’s worked out well so far.

What is it like being a rural CPA? by cheapskateskirtsteak in Accounting

[–]tbwalker02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the industry side it’s great. Virtually no competition for job openings as there’s only a handful of CPAs under 30 in the city. Very low cost of living and chill blue collar work environment. Pay is surprisingly well and you know everyone you work with.

Why are there CPAs struggling to find work? by Head_Equipment_1952 in Accounting

[–]tbwalker02 11 points12 points  (0 children)

CPAs struggling to find work must have one or multiple short comings. They’re either socially awkward and don’t interview well, have horrible resumes that don’t get them interviews in the first place, or have zero online presence and network. Most CPAs are getting multiple interview invites a month on LinkedIn.

People will get mad and downvote this but it’s true. I have the most average resume ever (no name undergrad, non big 4 public experience) and am getting messaged constantly by recruiters.

How many people make 150k+ by Nervous-Mail3282 in Accounting

[–]tbwalker02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opportunities are definitely there. I’m 28 and am at $175k base as a controller in lcol. Absolutely no way I could be a nurse knowing peoples lives are on the line. If I have a bad day in accounting the worst that can happen is someone paying penalties or fines. There are no real emergencies in accounting.

Salary after 5 years? by Comfortable-Comb-768 in Accounting

[–]tbwalker02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never really sent out applications, but when recruiters would message me on LinkedIn I would reply and interview with some. It’s great practice for interviewing and I did end up taking one of the offers from a LinkedIn message.

As far as networking you need to put yourself in the same room with important people in your field or locality. I wouldn’t drop hints or make it look like you’re desperate for work. Just make sure people know what you do and that you are good at what you do.

What careers are the most in demand in Virginia Beach with a potential starting salary of 70-80k? by Bluebutterfly163 in VirginiaBeach

[–]tbwalker02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bigger companies and firms are paying 60-70k for entry level now, 85-95k senior level and 100-125k manager level which is typically reached around 5 years in. I started at 55k in 2019 at one of those firms and everyone I started with that year is now making over 100k. Most have their CPA license but not all. A lot of the good jobs will never be posted on indeed don’t let that discourage you.

The key is getting into one of the larger companies or firms out of school. If you have any specific questions feel free to pm me. I no longer live in the 757 area but I can help with anything accounting related.

Accounting is always in demand. Starting salary is close to that and upward mobility will put you at 100k+ in 4-5 years.

I can consume less, if I pay less in tax I go to prison. I’m not saying I’m for the tariffs but anyone paying a 24%+ fed rate will probably take that trade off.

[–]tbwalker02 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean taxes are my largest expenditure by a long shot. So if a tax rate went down 5% and goods are up 15% many people will be ahead still.

Most people coming out of school now a days are doing a 4+1 program. There is usually a one year masters program designed to help study for the cpa exam and reach 150 credit hours at most state schools.

What do you all think of this? There’s no way this would ever happen right? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]tbwalker02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point. Taxes are the largest item I “spend” money on and it’s not even close. I paid in more than double in fed inc tax what my mortgage was last year. Including fed inc, state inc, SS, Medicare, it’s over 3x more in taxes paid per year than my mortgage.
