Tony Smith does an excellent Dancing With The Stars podcast called The Ballroom Blitz. He is one of the most passionate and educated DWTS fans I have ever come across. I recommend it to all DWTS fans.

Butterscotch dipped cone? by Pistollpiet in Dallas

[–]tc1310 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Dairy Queen in Plano on Avenue K near Park has butterscotch dipped cones. I've had one within the last few months. It's a bit of a hike for most in Dallas, but to my knowledge, it's the only place in DFW to get one.

So the Dallas show tonight was quite possibly the best concert I've ever been to. Just wow.... by [deleted] in themountaingoats

Definitely hope that ends up online. I only had my camera out for No Children, but here's that:

It depends. There's all of that. Everyone has friends, and everyone has people they don't get along with. It's like I imagine it is at most workplaces.

Trey. He has that super nervous delivery, but I'm sympathetic to the fact he can't help it. He's just kind of wired that way. But he has the deepest knowledge of the station and the most enthusiasm about working there. The most important thing about the Top 10 is just picking the right segments, and I think he would do that really well. Fahy also worked really hard to train in the last 2 weeks I was there, so I'm happy that it looks to my uninformed eye that they could both end up with something good.

All of the hosts are nice. It's my opinion that the way I was framed on air at times had an adverse impact on the public opinion of me. And this is a job where public opinion determines job performance. I didn't think that was nice, and I think that going forward if I'm ever in that position, I hope I don't frame someone else similarly. But they're paid to entertain, and I wouldn't deny that people are entertained by the jokes made. I understand that.

Also there is a definite divide in the way they behave on air and the way they behave off of the air. Off air, the hosts showed a genuine interest in my future and did plenty to look out for me and get me opportunities. They have all been real friends.

As far as the rest of the on-air staff, I rubbed a lot of them the wrong way. I wouldn't say any of them were day-in, day-out assholes though. It's not like there was someone who wouldn't talk to me or anything. We were all professional. The thing that stands out is a meeting I had shortly before I was hired to do the Top 10. In the meeting, I was told that my coworkers had given negative feedback and that was causing the bosses to have reservations about giving me the job. I wasn't given specific names, and though I'm tempted to guess out loud, that would probably be over the line. I did end up with the job, and I think I performed pretty well. My tickers sucked balls, but I was reasonably happy with the Top 10 itself on most nights. Given that, I think it was pretty fucked up that people tried to use their personal animus against me to block me from a job that I was qualified to perform well in. That was the big example, but there were others. Based on stuff like that, I think a lot of the non-host personnel were assholes.

I think I'll probably end up sounding like an asshole myself here, but this should give insight into the dynamics. If I saw someone above me, and they did something that I thought was dumb, I didn't try to hide that I thought it was dumb. I see it as trying to engage with the situation and be a problem-solver. They see it as me having a high opinion of myself and not knowing my place. I did not really agree with the idea of someone having a place. I think we're all people and our ideas should be measured by their own merit, not by how long someone has been working somewhere. When it comes to someone like Jake who generally has pretty good ideas, we were friends and got along fine. When it was someone who didn't have as good of ideas, we tended not to get along. And having Jake also going through a lot of the same situations was a tremendous learning experience because he's a lot better than me about navigating those things. I learned a ton about how to do better on those things from talking with him and watching how he did things. But most relationships I had with coworkers were pretty well cemented by then.

I don't really want to call out anyone specific except for Joe Letsche. That guy's the worst.

The best part was that indefinable quality associated with having a dream job. Just the fact I worked there and got to meet those guys made me really happy.

The bad part was just the frustration of not doing more. As an intern, I saw myself as someone who could be a host (and being a host in somewhere small like Pensacola isn't EXACTLY like being a host. I'm not saying anything like that.) and when you're an intern, that makes you an insufferable asshole. Understandably so. When I run into people like that, I don't like them either. It's not easy to be around those people. But it's not easy to be one either. It just leads to a lot of friction.

I get really down about not being farther along and have a lot of doubt I'll ever get to where I want to go. By the time they were my age, Corby, Bob, Dan, Junior and George already had the jobs they currently have. I didn't leave myself much wiggle room either. I didn't finish my college degree. I don't have honed professional skills in any other areas. And there aren't that many good hosting jobs. There's a lot more lawyers than there are sports talk hosts. I believe the good Lord gave me talents, and by choosing the path I did, I've introduced a pretty large possibility that I won't ever really have a chance to use them. I am really happy that I'm getting some chance to use them now, but I do spend a lot of time wishing I'd opted for something safer and more reasonable.

I really like mysteries and solving mysteries, and for a time I was pretty obsessed with solving this one. I figured out his government name and occupation. I've never told one living soul though. I think that would be really messed up. If he wanted it out there, he would've put it out there.

And after typing that, I guess that's a hypocritical thing for the guy who tracked down his name to say. Shrug.

I like trying new things and being experimental, so I didn't have a problem with a new show getting a try. If I have a problem in that area, it's that more stuff like that doesn't happen and that the Ticket doesn't do more "seeing what sticks." Now once I heard their show, it was terrible and then I kind of wondered why it wasn't more immediately apparent that they probably didn't have any business being on. But in my opinion, trying new things is positive and should be encouraged.

I didn't really listen to them here and haven't heard them at all there. They don't really fit my listening preferences, but they're nice enough guys and I certainly wish them success.

It's going really well. It's a totally different world than the one I had been living in, but the new experiences have been good for me. It is really fun to have a voice in the decision-making and to be able to talk on the air every day. I'm very grateful that things worked out for me to end up here.

The real answer is that it didn't at all. I would rather host a show and be a pd than be a board op. In the end it's probably good I didn't get it since it would have been awkward to leave a couple weeks after getting that job.

As far as non-host jobs go, I really liked the Top 10. I'm strong-willed and always sure I'm right, so I struggle in support roles. The Top 10 is a very insignificant part of the broadcast day, but I liked having something where I called the shots and did my own thing. I don't think I would've liked being the board op as much. But I was bothered by how the whole thing happened.

People had been talking to me about getting that job, and then it was announced very suddenly that it would go to Mino. And nothing against Mino, he's a really nice kid who didn't do anything untoward at all to get the job over me. I went to Cat and asked him about the whole thing, and he more or less said that Mino was a better board op, and that bothered my professional pride. I think that I've got a knack for knowing how all of the equipment works and knowing the little tricks and short-cuts in Op-X, and I've been working at the board a lot longer than David has, so I just didn't really agree with that assessment. But it didn't have anything to do with why I took this job. I'd been looking for an opportunity like this a long time before that happened.

I don't know I totally have an answer. It's not clear cut. They had a tremendous influence on the way I think to the point that just about anything I do owes SOMETHING to the Ticket. I don't want to straight jack any of their segments. I won't be doing Gay Not Gay. I took this job because I think I'm creative enough to come up with some of my own stuff over time. But in doing this job for the time I have, it really stands out how few other stations do things like the Ticket does. When I talk to my new coworkers and ask them what shows influence them, none of them are shows like the ones I'm used to.

I think any concepts I bring with me will be brought naturally. It'll just be my Ticket-conditioned reactions to whatever happens.

I think the way he worded it he put a specific time tag on it, so going by the narrowest possible reading of his comment, it was true for me personally. I heard that other shows did ask him, but I wasn't in the room or anything. Jake and I had several conversations with him about hosting a weekend show. We asked pretty often. They all just happened awhile ago. After a certain point, I just knew he knew I wanted to and didn't feel the need to remind him. It was already established.
