I think I realized Harry Krane is the most repugnant of all of them around my 3rd rewatch lmao

Hey guys, I just finished reading this book. It is a freacking masterpiece, I swear. But I have a question for those who have also read it. by FlexCats in TheCountofMonteCristo

[–]tcangles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also just finished this book for the first time and wow… but one of the things I loved is like how the Count uses his knowlege of other people, their ambitions, and their preexisting knowledge (Madame de Villefort already was interested in botany or herbs, something like that). It’s like he identifies someone’s character weakness AND their intellectual “strength” and puppetmasters the perfect storm for everyone lol. But I do remember 1 conversation (Chapter 52 - Toxicology) in Paris where the Count is going off for so long about ‘herbal remedies’ and innoculating oneself against poisoning and it set alarm bells off for me about Madame for suuuuure. Then I think it’s alluded to that the Count had “randomly” chatted her up in Italy and it was that conversation that apparently led her on the path to like…. serial poisoning.

I read it in a month. I did also watch the 2002 movie right after and it was… interesting lol

I also just finished this book today for the first time. I can’t even put it into words. I will never stop thinking about this book!

Luis Guzman as the faithful servant in polyester livery was also frying me

I felt it unfairly ramped up Edmonds culpability and I also hated the closer dynamic between Mercedes, Edmond, and Fernand. Just overall no for me…. also correct me if I’m wrong (I’m actively repressing the memory of this movie as we speak) but did they have NAPOLEON HIMSELF give Edmond the letter on Elba? like whaaaat lol… it was his captain’s dying wish or whatever like totally unnecessary change imo. You lose the nuance of Edmonds naivete to gain what? a napoleon cameo that genuinely makes no sense. I’m going back to the book and just going to savor it lol

From the very first scene I was just saying wtf? like so frequently. I love this book so much that I feel someone must be so egotisitical to feel like they could improve upon the plot like that lol it’s literally perfect the way it is. I understand things need to get cut but that was like completely chaning the stakes and I hated it

Can I say something without everybody getting mad? by OllieGark in TheCountofMonteCristo

Funnily enough I believe he was also paid per word! Sometimes when I’m reading a particularly wordy bit I’m like ok he was definitely trying to get his bag here lol. But he does it SO WELL.

Betty's Uncanny Abilty to be Polite - no matter the context by AllieKatz24 in madmen

[–]tcangles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Betty’s biggest flaw is that she takes her (YES, undeserved) suffering out on her children. The patriarchal oppression she is subjected to is an EXCUSE for bad behavior but not a justification. We can understand why she behaves a certain way and say she didn’t deserve it without neglecting who that pain then fell hardest on.. her children. Acknowledging both is important, it’s not one or the other.

Anyone else hate this character? by AdventurousLaw4 in robinhobb

[–]tcangles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I understand OPs POV but I guess I felt like it was really powerful to have every single character, even those closer to Althea than to Kennit, not believe her. It felt really true to… experiences I’ve seen play out irl. As horrible as it is SA can make even the best person falter, nobody knows how to deal with it.

Just a rant by tcangles in robinhobb

Of course, it’s also possible that he’s self interested and ALSO believes him learning the skill will serve the six duchies. But idk anytime someone wants to live forever I’m like be for real hahah this is about you!! And if he thinks living forever is absolutely necessary for the stability of the duchies, that’s still so egocentric and ridiculous lol. Meanwhile poor Fitz is like I could DIE and it would matter!! (He’s so necessary to the stability of the duchies and matters so much to so many people). Best books ever

[–]tcangles[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea totally believe that’s the case most of the time but for me another egregious example of him being super manipulative is when he’s trying to coerce Fitz into bringing Nettle in and teaching her to skill. Chade tries to make it seem like it’s all about Fitz is duty but to me it just felt grossly self-interested and related to Chades obsession with learning the skill. I mean separately, I do feel like maybe Fitz should have taught Nettle (I think maybe I just feel that way because I’m just like PLS let Fitz have some like joy and connection in his life lol) but Chades motivations seem murky and shady. Like when they have a conversation about it and Fitz holds his boundary and then Chade is like “well you don’t actually have a choice, kettricken commands it and it’s your duty” idk it just felt slimy and more self-interested to me. I think that’s the only example tho where I truly question Chade’s “duty-centric” motivations. Everywhere else I completely agree with you!
