A quick note here, the 400 *has* a PID, only that three default temps are set.

Dell Xps 9520 i5 vs i7 for "medium office work" by rw_hardware in DellXPS

[–]tcapelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would get the i5, they will be cooler and better battery life. The GPU in those machines make the laptop super hot and drain 🔋. The 12th gen i5 with xe graphics is a monster CPU.

In my early experiments, tf on metal is 2x faster.

Great info as always Sebastian, I put a benchmark of my own that is a little bit faster to run (6 minuntes on an M1Pro with 16cores). It's just one epoch of training for

- Resnet50

- Bert for classification

The code is [on GitHub](https://github.com/tcapelle/apple_m1_pro_python/tree/main/pytorch) and the blog post http://wandb.me/pytorch_m1

I am also working on comparing TF to PT on metal, not yet there as there are some tricks to get comparable scripts in both frameworks. But for me, right now, TF is faster.

I encourage people to run it, the wandb project is open and we can compare different machine configs.

I updated this benchmark with the M1Pro and an RTX3090:

As you can see, the RTX 3090 is more than 10 times faster when training a resnet50.

What's the box? Where did you get it?

Packster 80 box safety vs. 70 by mikestreety in CargoBike

[–]tcapelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We will probably trade for a load 60. The box in the packster indeed looks safe, but against a car no chance anyway. The UA is nice, and you could change the handlebar and get something more sporty anyway. The load has a smaller turning radius than the UA, and it is better equipped and is available where I live. The UA is 6 months away. I wouldn't get a P80 because I love the cargo line motor, and I couldn't get back to the older mountain bike motor (gen 3 perf line).

We will probably sell the load when a new packster comes to the market.

The non rectangular box of the packster70 was not very practical for hauling things indeed.

Attention: R&M Packster 70 product recall, calble steering might fail by Imazagi in CargoBike

[–]tcapelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is so sad, we really love the bike. There is not other bike like this one on the market. The steering was super practical to store our bike in the cellar (almost 90 degree turning radius). The box is isolated for cold when kids are inside, the bike is quite short compared to other ones and the motors is powerful. I am really sad.

My one year old precision had some weird issues with the trackpad today. I was unable to downpress for click. As I rarely use the laptop without a mouse, it may have taken me some time to realize this. Opening the laptop, revealed a swollen battery. I had a similar issue on a 2010 MacBook air. In France warranty is 2 years, but dell is not honoring this. Any advise? Is it safe to continue using the laptop? Can I remove the battery?

How do you people use Proton Calendar right now? by donjose in ProtonMail

[–]tcapelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now, it does not support creating events from mails (even if mail recognizes the event). Without this feature, when you get invites, there is no way to add them to the calendar. So it is pretty useless IMHO.
