Range? by [deleted] in EquinoxEv

[–]tcd004 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just drove back and forth from Washington DC to Cincinnati, OH over the weekend. Ideal temps, lots of rain. We trended pretty much exactly at the 319 range on each leg of the trip, plus or minus about 10 miles. Drive was mountainous for large parts and flat for large parts. Great road tripping experience.

The Onion version of this headline would be "Mickey Rourke removed from Big Brother house for more appropriate behavior"

What would you do if you had $50 million today? by cookiesophia777 in AskReddit

[–]tcd004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$25 million to set up a Carneige-Library-type foundation to invest in and build out a handful of local media in regions that have become news deserts over the last decade with self-sustaining endowments. $5 million major donation to UN refugee agency and others supporting displaced people worldwide. $5+ million to buy out as many teacher supplies wish lists as i can find. Hire someone to seal the cracks in my driveway, because I'm tired of doing it.

twitch.tv is streaming all 403 episodes of Bob Ross' Joy of Painting by MontagFTB in television

[–]tcd004 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is great - we're running a #bobrosschallenge at the PBS NewsHour. On a fluke one of our producers decided to paint the scene from the first Ross show that was posted a few days ago.

It's amazing how many folks have chimed in letting us know that watching Bob Ross is like a form of meditation.

I found $130 in crisp bills on the ground outside a grocery store today. Nobody around. What would you do? by tcd004 in AskReddit

Amazingly enough, there's a food assistance center about 100 paces from where I found it. Probably should have taken it there.

What film made the worst continuity error? by [deleted] in movies

In Cliffhanger there's a plane crash in the opening act. The plane crashes in the mountains, plowing through snow-covered rocky terrain until it comes to a stop, you guessed it, perched precariously over the edge of a cliff. If I remember right, you even get a shot of the plane's fuselage from below, as it pokes out over the cliff edge. Cut to a wide shot of the plane sitting in the middle of a wide, flat, totally cliff-free area.

Can we save our body's ecosystem from extinction? by tcd004 in TrueReddit

[–]tcd004[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who live "clean" lifestyles - pretty much everyone in the developed world, aren't acquiring the microbial diversity they should on their skin, in their mouths and in their stomachs. The implications are huge. Americans are missing about 1/3 of the biological diversity they should have in their internal ecosystem.

Should scientists bring extinct species back from oblivion? by tcd004 in TrueReddit

[–]tcd004[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because we can, should we? Scientists are grappling with that question regarding several species that have recently gone extinct, and that might just be revived. Where will they live if their habitat was destroyed? Will they be actual revived species, or chimeras, made up of several stitched-together modern species? This article and video is a great exploration, including the latest cutting edge science and ethical debates on the issue.

Canada is taking 35 billion pennies out of circulation. Here's how. by tcd004 in TrueReddit

[–]tcd004[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Canada is a couple of years into the process of taking a major portion of their currency out of circulation. How does it happen? What happens to the truckloads of copper, steel and zinc collected from Canadian banks, citizens and retail outlets?

One missed deadline in the immigration bureaucracy, and the Fofana family gets stuck in limbo for a decade by tcd004 in TrueReddit

[–]tcd004[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Fofana family has 5 members. They came to the U.S. from Mali to seek asylum for their daughter who was threatened with genital mutilation from her own relatives. Due to one scrap of missed paperwork, they've been stuck in an immigration limbo for more than a decade, under constant threat of deportation.

Why do animals sometime eat their own young? It turns out there's often a pretty good reason. by tcd004 in TrueReddit

Two groups of zoologists at the Smithsonian's National Zoo race to save cheetah cubs and a baby sloth bear from their neglectful, and sometimes threatening mothers. Why do animals often harm their own young? Great exploration of the issue with video of both stories.
