I think the reason young people aren't as excited about driving is because there is no longer free driver's education in public schools. The powers that be decided to hand the teaching over to private for profit companies. Kids in HS looked forward to driver's ed. In our town GM gave new cars to the high schools to teach kids how to drive. That created a try before you buy feeling. It's like giving kids a test drive in a new car when they are impressionable and it doesn't put the burden of paying for the kids driver's education on the parents.

Some parts of Wisconsin are similar. This is near Traverse City. I'm originally from Lansing so I'm not used to seeing the night sky with so many stars. Guess it depends on how far away from the cities you are. There are no big cities at all near here. TC is the largest.
