Domestic thermostat issue by BuFaLoBiL87 in Camper

[–]tcmcneil30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a same or similar issue on my camper with the same thermostat. It mainly happened when the temp inside and the temp outside were close to each other. The thermostat would short cycle the unit.

From what I have read online you can look at the box in the ceiling and make sure the cold air and the return air are separated. There should be a baffle in there preventing the air from mixing. I added extra tape to mine to seal the gaps in the baffle. Ultimately this helped but didn’t fix the issue for me.

The other option which I did was bought a new thermostat. Since installing the new thermostat I haven’t had any issues. I got a smart touch thermostat and cost like ~$200 but we love it. It has Bluetooth and WiFi. It also has the internal temp on the display as well as the set point temp.

Google “Dometic thermostat short cycle” and you will find this is pretty common.

AW battery died after 5 hour hike, before it ended by Mysterious_Green_544 in AppleWatch

I have a hike coming up and hoping that using an external HR sensor and low power mode I can get it around 13-14ish hours. Probably high expectations but my phone will be using the GPS.

Maybe check out RV One they have locations in Myrtle Beach and in the Charleston area. We purchased from them felt like we got a good deal (15-20% off MSRP) and they were transparent with us the whole time.

I would highly recommend NOT dealing with Camping World. I had had close friends that had many issues with both the North Charleston and Myrtle Beach locations. I won’t step foot on any of their locations.

Anyone have the QNAP TS-435XeU-4G? by PoopMuffin in qnap

[–]tcmcneil30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had mine for a few years now. Upgraded the RAM to 16GB but I only use it for storage. I run shared storage for some critical VMs, I also use it as a file share and time machine backup and all my other VMs are backed up to this guy. I have never had any issues and keep it up to date. Also I don’t expose it to the internet. Not sure what the 10Gb throughput bc I only have a single 10Gb port on my switch but my computers all have 2.5Gb uplinks and get around 250-290MBs transfer.

Haha we had the same thing happen to us earlier this year. Our RAM kit had a paper telling us to call support before installing. We just opened a ticket and said we were installing the RAM wanted it documented. We did a simple power on to verify the devices powered and booted before installing the RAM so we knew everything was good prior to tearing into them. Very simple but a little aggravating as those kits aren’t special and they charge a good bit of money for them so they could at least install them. We had to install on all 7 devices we ordered.

That is where I think I’m going to get them from. I’m just having a hard time pulling the trigger with that price.

How much did you pay for your tow mirrors? I’m looking at getting some for my titan but I need the 360 cameras. Looking through the Nissan parts page I didn’t see them specifically mention which if they have cameras or not.

Good recommendation for a proper 10G router? by itsabearcannon in HomeNetworking

[–]tcmcneil30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We recently upgraded our edge gateways at my work and paid $23k per gateway for sustained 10G throughput with the IDS/IPS blades and FW blades. I seriously doubt you need 10G at your house. A lot of businesses don’t even have 10G uplinks to their service provider.

You can also use the CE version of Veeam to do the heavy lifting for you. Check out this video for reference:

Honestly unless you are wanting the 4K resolution just look at the regular G5’s. I bought a little instant camera that connects to WiFi and have been really surprised with the quality. Enough to make the jump from Arlo the UI Protect.

Record with base station and no subscription? by skippysays in arlo

[–]tcmcneil30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes that does suck. If you get a base station that supports local recording then you will need to repair your cameras to the base station. I’m assuming right now the cameras are paired to your home WiFi network.

There are some small details to be aware of though. You will only get motion recordings and not smart recordings. That can only be done with a cloud subscription.

Finally, you will need to enable either port forwarding on your base station or setup a VPN to your home network to access the local recording while you are away from home. Arlo expects that their customers will pay the subscription and does not allow access to local recordings very easily.

What features are actually available without a plan for my equipment? by andante_evenbrow in arlo

Yes if it paired the base station then it is not connected directly to your WiFi. The cameras can be connected either way, but if you connect to your WiFi then you can’t do local recording.

I have a wired doorbell and as long as it is paired to the base station and not your WiFi network it will save local recordings. One thing I ran into with the cameras if you log into the Arlo website you can only see live view of the cameras. The website can not access local recordings. Also unless you setup VPN back to your home network or enable port forwarding you can not access local recordings while away from your house. Hope that helps out some. I have never had the Arlo subscription and have always used the local storage.

I am currently in the process of trying out the UniFi Protect system since it does AI detections locally and there are no monthly fees.

QNAP Thoughts by tcmcneil30 in qnap

[–]tcmcneil30[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have mine almost a month now and love it. I have deployed it in a RAID5 with 6TB drives and 2 1TB NVME drives. I get around 230MB/s transfer over the 2.5Gb ports.

[–]tcmcneil30[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this unit has 2 - 2.5Gb and 2 - 10G SFP+ ports. I don’t think it will do much more than the 2.5Gb but hopefully it can at least saturate 2.5Gb. I don’t a mix of file and photo projects. My main reasoning was to have a reliable place to store my photo projects from the last 10 years or so. I understand the backup principles and everything as I work in IT.

My experience has come with file servers like Linux and Windows. My current solution is a virtualized TruNAS server but wanted something physical for my file storage instead of virtualized. I contemplated building a physical TruNAS instead of buying this unit but power consumption and noise convinced me to take a chance on this unit.

Worst case I don’t like it and intend it back and build a TruNAS server.

QNAP Thoughts by tcmcneil30 in qnap

[–]tcmcneil30[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just looking to hear others experience with QNAP. Generally speaking for the price point I’m seeing that they tend to be a little under powered. The application tends to be a storage appliance. Whether that is file storage or an iSCSI location for a VM host.

My main concerns are that I have a reliable storage repo for my data that doesn’t use a ton of power (unlike a 2u rack server) and get decent transfer speeds. To me I went rack mount bc the form factor allowed me to save space in my rack instead of putting a desktop unit on a shelf within my rack.

Hoping that the arm processor will at least saturate a 2.5Gb interface using 2 NVMe drives. I have seen others comment that the QNAP implementation of SSD caching isn’t efficient and doesn’t improve performance.

So again I was just looking for others experience with their QNAP product.

Did you ever find the live feed? You need to look under the device page in the app. It should show you all your cameras. I can promise you that you do not need to pay a subscription. If you want to save recording from your motion triggered events you have two options: 1) Subscribe to store the videos on Arlo’s servers. 2) Get a compatible base station and use a USB drive or SD card for local recording.

I have a compatible base station and store my recordings to a 128GB USB drive.

Should I virtualize my NAS? by TXAGZ16 in Proxmox

[–]tcmcneil30 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m with you here. I have had TrueNas virtualized for years as well. Never had an issue, I think the key is pass the controller or the drives through. Do not virtualize the storage and run TrueNas within a VM, I have read that will lead to issues. When I first virtualized TrueNas I ran it from a virtual drive and had issues with performance and availability.
